J. Wesley Alexander

ELON COLLEGE — J. Wesley Alexander, 69, 623 Cable Road, died Thursday (May 25, 2000) at University of North Carolina Hospitals, Chapel Hill, after a brief illness.

Formerly head of the math department at Elon College, he was the brother of Minnie McCachren of Salisbury.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Elon College Community Church. Burial, Magnolia Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Rich and Thompson Mortuary, Burlington. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

H.A. Andrews

GRAY, Ga. — H.A. Andrews, 90, died Thursday, (May 25, 2000) at his residence.

He was the father of H.A. Andrews Jr. of Salisbury, N.C.

Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Riverside Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-7 p.m. Sunday Ingleside Memorial Chapel, Macon.

Howard Thomas Beck

COOLEEMEE— The funeral will be Sunday for Howard Thomas Beck, 61, Center Street, who died Friday (May 26, 2000) at his residence.

Born June 1, 1938 in Rowan County, Mr. Beck was a son of the late Burlie Archie and Thomas N. Beck. He had worked for Ingersoll-Rand of Mocksville for 30 years.

He was a member of Victory Baptist Church and the Civitan Club. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he had earned recognition as a marksman.

Survivors include wife Judy Jordan Beck; son David Beck, Cooleemee; sister Faye Moore, Pasadena, Texas; and one grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, Victory Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Shelby Harbour and the Rev. Stan Riddle. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. today, Eaton Funeral Home.

Ferlin ‘Pop’ Chappell

KANNAPOLIS — Funeral services were held this morning for Ferlin “Pop”Chappell, 77, 5085 Macon St., who died Thursday (May 25, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation, Salisbury, after six months of declining health.

Born July 26, 1922, in Transylvania County, Mr. Chappell was a son of the late H.B. and Margaret Morgan Chappell. He had retired from Fieldcrest Cannon after 34 years with the company. He was a member of Lake Toxaway Baptist Church, Rosman.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he received the Good Conduct Medal, the Clasp American Campaign Ribbon, the EAMERibbon and the World War II Victory Medal.

A son, David Carroll Chappell, preceded him in death.

Survivors include son Christopher Barry Chappell, Kannapolis; daughters Bronwyn Goodman and Carmen Lynn Chappell, both of Kannapolis, and Glenda Bringle, Pisgah Forest; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 11 this morning at Carolina Memorial Park. The Rev. Kenneth McQueen officiated. Military rites by DAVChapter 27.

Patricia Jean Collins

MOORESVILLE — Patricia Jean Collins, 41, Revere Drive, died Friday (May 26, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Retirement in Mooresville.

Born April 12, 1959, in Winston-Salem, she was a daughter of Robert Lee Collins, Mooresville, and the late Jean Mullen Collins. A graduate of Reynolds High School, she was manager of Pier Marina and a member of Berea Baptist Church.

In addition to her father, survivors include daughter Crystal Bradshaw, Mooresville.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Berea Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dan Freeman. Burial, Salem Cemetery, Winston-Salem.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. today, Cavin Funeral Home.

Evelyn S. Deal

ROCKWELL — Evelyn S. Deal, 85, of The Meadows of Rockwell, died Saturday (May 27, 2000) at the Brian Center, Salisbury.

David M. Harris

The funeral will be Sunday for David M. Harris, 68, who died Friday (May 26, 2000) at Brightmoor Nursing Center.

Born Sept. 13, 1931 in Stuarts Draft, Va., Mr. Harris was a son of the late Gladys Tisdale and Warren Alexander Harris. Educated in the Stuarts Draft schools, he had retired from the U.S. Air Force. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict.

Survivors include daughters Kim Wyatt, Salisbury, Angela Holling, Colorado Springs, Colo., Cheryl Rowell, Charleston, S.C., Crystal Wade, Lexington, Ky.; brothers Charles and Joe Harris, both of Stuarts Draft, Va.; sisters Kathleen Willis, Fishersville, Va.. and Joann Painter, Stuarts Draft, Va.; and six grandchildren.

Service: Memorial, 2 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Memorial Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Neill Shaw, pastor, Milford Hills United Methodist Church. The body will be cremated.

Eva Myrna Hathcock

OAKBORO— Eva Myrna Hathcock, 78, 6890 Mineral Springs Road, died Thursday (May 25, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born May 13, 1922 in Stanly County, she was a daughter of the late Pearl Mae Green Hathcock and James Bunyan Hathcock. She had been employed in the physical therapy department at Stanly Memorial Hospital. She was a graduate of Pfeiffer College and Appalachian State Teachers College.

A U.S. Army veteran of the Women’s Medical Specialist Corps, she served 25 years in Japan, Korea and Germany during World War II and the Korean Conflict. She achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel.

Services: 10 a.m. Monday, Mineral Springs Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Martin.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Sunday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times, the family will be at the residence.

Robert C. Holtzclaw

WOODLEAF — The funeral will be Monday for Robert Clinton “Rob” Holtzclaw, 75, 943 Geter Road, who died Wednesday (May 24, 2000) at the Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury after a period of declining health.

Born March 15, 1925, in Rowan County, Mr. Holtzclaw was a son of the late Hilda Fisher and Milas T. Holtzclaw. He was a graduate of Aggrey Memorial High School, Landis, and Winston-Salem Barbers’ College.

A retired master barber, he was last employed at Ted’s Barber Shop, Salisbury. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Salisbury-Rowan Veterans Council.

He was also a member of Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, Landis, where he was a trustee and a patron of the Life Members Council. He sang in the Norris A. Reid Choir and the Senior Choir.

Survivors include wife Ida Mattison Holtzclaw; daughter Belinda Williams, Kannapolis; stepsons Jerry Rucker, Baltimore, and Reginald Rucker, Woodleaf; stepdaughter Patricia Rivers, Winston-Salem; sisters Maetta Holtzclaw, Washington, D.C., Carrie Holtzclaw, Long Island, N.Y., and Aurelia Jones, Salisbury; two grandchildren; one great-grandchild; four step-grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11:30 a.m. Monday, Sandy Ridge AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Bobby L. Smith, pastor. Burial, 10 a.m. Tuesday, Salisbsury National Cemetery, with military rites by the Veterans Council.

Visitation: 11 a.m. Monday at the church.

Charles Wesley Lloyd

KANNAPOLIS — Charles Wesley Lloyd, 79, 2311 W. C St., died Saturday (May 27, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord.

Ruth Wilson Orbison

MOORESVILLE — Ruth Belle Wilson Orbison, 86, East Center Street, formerly of Circle Drive, died Friday (May 26, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born May 23, 1914, in Iredell County, Mrs. Orbison was a daughter of the late Freddie and Flossie Miller Wilson. She was a retired spinner for Burlington Industries with 50 years of service. She attended Mount Mourne Church of God.

Her husband, Arthur “Shortie” Elbert Orbison, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Billy Gene Orbison, Kannapolis, and Jerry Darrell Orbison, Mooresville; daughter Joan O. Overcash, Mount Ulla; half brother Harlie Wilson, Statesville; 12 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Cavin Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Owenby and the Rev. Robert Wiseman. Burial, Centenary United Methodist Church cemetery, Mount Ulla.

Visitation: 6:30-8 p.m. today, Cavin Funeral Home.

Hoyle Matthew Sperry

Hoyle Matthew Sperry, 51, 7260 Sherrills Ford Road, died Friday (May 26, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Seth Raymond Sutton

CHINA GROVE — Seth Raymond Sutton, 18, 835 Barnhardt Road, died Friday (May 26, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born June 10, 1981, in Cabarrus County, he was the son of Christiane Corriher and Keith Raymond Sutton, China Grove. A 1999 graduate of South Rowan High School, he served on the student council and the yearbook staff. He was vice president of Raiders Against Drunk Driving and a member of Junior Civitans.

A student in electronic engineering at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, he was also an assistant manger at the American Outpost store at the Concord Mills mall.

He was a member of New Hope Lutheran Church, where he was active in the men’s group and the youth group. He had achieved life rank with Boy Scout Troop No. 375 at First United Methodist Church.

In addition to his parents, survivors include sister Kristen Ruth Sutton and grandparents Virginia Sutton and Cecil and Eva Corriher, all of China Grove.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, New Hope Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Joseph Kovitch. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. today at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times, the family will be at the home on Barnhardt Road.

Olena Sifford Howell

The funeral will be Sunday for Olena Sifford Howell, 74, Salisbury, who died Thursday (May 25, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.

Born Aug. 18, 1925, in Rowan County, Mrs. Howell was a daughter of the late George Henry and Anna Troutman Sifford. A graduate of Rockwell High School, she had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, sewing room. She was a life member of Organ Lutheran Church.

Survivors include brother Clyde Sifford, Salisbury.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, Organ Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. John E. Pless. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 2:30-3:45 p.m. Sunday in the church fellowship hall.

KANNAPOLIS — Mabel Violet Archer Sills, 91, formerly of Sides Avenue, died Thursday (May 25, 2000) in Stafford, Va.
