CHINA GROVE— Two pedestrians were involved in an accident early this morning that killed an 18-year-old driver.
Seth Raymond Sutton, 835 Barnhardt Road, died en route to Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem around 12:30 a.m.
Sutton lost control of his 1997 Mitsubishi after his driver-side mirror struck a pedestrian either in the median or in the road, said China Grove Police Chief Michael Bentley.
The names of the pedestrians were not available.
“We are still investigating the accident, and there are a lot of things we still don’t know,” Bentley said.
Bentley said it appears the vehicle ran off the road and traveled about three “city blocks” before coming to rest.
A passenger in Sutton’s vehicle, Adam Sutton, 18, 515 W. Ridge Ave., was treated and released at NorthEast Medical Center. The boys are not related.
“He is physically OK. He’s got some bumps and bruises,” said Adam Sutton’s father, the Rev. Barry Sutton, this morning.
Adam Sutton is supposed to graduate from South Rowan High School this evening.
“He said he was still going to (graduation) before he went and laid down, but I imagine when he wakes up he is going to be pretty stiff,” Barry Sutton said of his son.
Barry Sutton said he isn’t sure his son will be in the spirit to celebrate at such a traumatic time.
“They were best friends,” he said of the teens.
Seth Sutton graduated from South Rowan High School in 1999. He had just completed his first year at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, where he was majoring in electronic engineering, according to Jerry Chandler, vice president for operations.
Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home in China Grove is handling the funeral arrangements.
