LANDIS — Dwayne Fink, who led South Rowan to the best season in its baseball history just four years ago, has resigned as head coach of the Raiders.
Fink, 34, recently notified South principal Dr. Alan King of his decision to give up the baseball post after 11 years in the Raider program, the last five as head coach. Fink resigns with a varsity record of 59-62. A math teacher, Fink will continue as coach of the school’s cross country teams.
Fink played for East Rowan High and the Rowan County AmericanLegion team and graduated from N.C. State University.
He became an assistant in the baseball and basketball programs at South shortly after graduation. His jayvee coaching career peaked with an undefeated baseball team in 1995. That success led to the head varsity job when Ernie Faw gave up baseball in the spring of ‘95 after leading South for 13 seasons.
Fink’s varsity debut was spectacular. South went 23-4, compiling the greatest number of wins in school history.
South won the 4A Central Piedmont Conference, the only time South won a league title in baseball, football or basketball in the ‘90s. It also won the Easter Tournament for the first time.
Fink followed that initial success with a 16-11 season and another trip to the state playoffs, but then came a dry spell. The past three seasons, South went 20-47.
Fink’s successor may not be named for awhile. Potential candidates include varsity assistant Linn Williams, who once was head coach at Mount Pleasant, and former Catawba player Greg Yanz, who has been the jayvee coach since ‘95.
