Lois Herring Crutchfield

KANNAPOLIS — Lois Herring Crutchfield, 88, 600 Willow Drive, Kannapolis, died Saturday (May 20, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center.

Born on Sept. 14, 1911, in Sampson County, she was a daughter of the late C.L. and Flossie Herring.

She was a member of First Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday School teacher. She taught in public schools in Pasquatank County until 1938.

Survivors include her husband, Robert W. Crutchfield; son Robert Herring Crutchfield, Houston, Texas; sister Hilda Logan, Sun City West, Ariz.; and one grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tom Cabaniss. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday at Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Memorials: First Baptist Church Building Fund, 101 N. Main St., Kannapolis, N.C. 28081.

 

Clifford M. Gibbons

KANNAPOLIS — Clifford McCleary Gibbons, 71, Kannapolis, died Friday (May 19, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born on Sept. 18, 1928, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Gibbons was a son of the late W.G. Gibbons and Gladys Marlow Gibbons.

A U.S. Navy veteran, he had retired from Cannon Mills.

Survivors include a friend, Hayden Clontz of Monroe, and aunt Marion Dudley of Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Graham Nahouse; burial in Kannapolis Cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Monday at funeral home.

 

Fred Eugene Goodson

MOUNT ULLA — Fred Eugene Goodson, 81, Mount Ulla, died Friday ( May 19, 2000) at Davis Hospital in Statesville following six months of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.

Born on Aug. 6, 1918 in Iredell County, he was a son of the late Fred and Eva Freeze Goodson.

A graduate of Cleveland High School, Mr. Goodson was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II. Mr. Goodson retired from the U.S. Naval Shipyards in Portsmouth, Va.

He attended St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church and was a member of Scotch-Ireland Masonic Lodge 154 in Cleveland.

His second wife, Ruby Miller Shinn Goodson, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his first wife, Margie Louise Robison Goodson; sons Ronnie Lee Goodson, Salisbury, and Larry Eugene Goodson, Blaine, Tenn.; brothers E.J. Goodson and Claude Goodson, both of Salisbury; sister Viola Myers, Salisbury; and three grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, James C. Lyerly Chapel of Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. John Southern. Burial, St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Salisbury, with Masonic graveside rites by Scotch-Ireland Lodge.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at Lyerly Funeral Home.

Gina Ritchie Hamilton

KANNAPOLIS — Gina Ritchie Hamilton, 38, 203 East Fourth St., died Saturday (May 20, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born on July 11,1961 in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter of the late Wallace B. and Joyce Rogers Ritchie.

A 1979 graduate of A.L. Brown High School, Mrs. Hamilton was also a graduate of Appalachian State University. She worked for CT Communications for 16 years in the accounting department.

She was a member of the North Kannapolis Baptist Church and its choir. She was also a member of the Miracle Club for Transplant Recipients.

Survivors include her husband, Phillip Hamilton; grandfather Martin L. Ritchie, Kannapolis; grandmother Lucy R. Rogers, Kannapolis; brother Brian Ritchie, Kannapolis; Leigh Ann Ritchie, Kannapolis; stepdaughter Amanda Hamilton, Kannapolis; stepmother Joyce Scott Ritchie, Kannapolis; stepbrother Danny Scott, Kannapolis; stepsisters Michelle Carothers and Dawn Elwood, both of Kannapolis.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, North Kannapolis Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Coy Privette. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times, the family will be at the home of Lucy Rogers, 112 York Ave.

Leona Eudy Mauldin

ALBEMARLE —

Born on Sept. 6, 1915, in Stanly County, she was a daughter of the late Mattie Elizabeth Harwood Eudy and Duncan Eudy.

Her husband, Robert Franklin “Bob” Mauldin, died on Feb. 8, 1975.

She was retired from Wiscassett Mills where she worked as a knitter. A lifetime member of West Albemarle Baptist Church, she also was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Mike Dunn. Burial, Anderson Grove Baptist Church Cemetery, Albemarle.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

 

Edna Earnhardt Rufty

Edna Earnhardt Rufty, 91, Salisbury, died Saturday (May 20, 2000) at the N.C. Special Care Center in Wilson.

Born Aug. 21, 1908, in Salisbury, Mrs. Rufty was a daughter of the late Jessie Daniel Earnhardt and Thomas C. Earnhardt.

Educated in the Salisbury City Schools, she worked with her late husband, E.L. Rufty, in the operation of E.L. Rufty Grocery Co. She later worked with Guyes Department Store until retiring.

She was a member of Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church and the Kings Daughters, now called the Charity Circle.

Her husband died on Oct. 23, 1983.

Survivors include sons Donald L. Rufty and Thomas C. Rufty, both of Salisbury; sister Evelyn Johnson, Salisbury; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. today, graveside, with the Rev. Harlan Creech; burial Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: Following the service. At other times, the family will be at the home of son Thomas Rufty, 507 Welch Road.

Memorials: Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church, 901 S.Church St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

Summersett Funeral Home of Salisbury is in charge.

 

Phyllis Beam Spry

KANNAPOLIS — Phyllis Beam Spry, 64, 2112 Lynn St., Kannapolis, died Saturday (May 20, 2000) at her home.

Born on Oct. 12, 1935, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of Grace Beam Steele, Kannapolis, and the late Spencer Eugene “Red” Beam.

Mrs. Spry worked for Bank of America for 40 years, including as an assistant branch manager at the university area office. She was a member of Jackson Park United Methodist Church, where she was a former Sunday School teacher and choir member.

Mrs. Spry was a member of the Kannapolis Junior Women’s Club, the Credit Womens International and a charter member of K-Town Vagabonds Club.

Survivors include her husband of 45 years, Larry Spry; daughter Kim Laws, Kannapolis; and brother Jerry Beam, Kannapolis.

She was preceded in death by son Larry Russell “Rusty” Spry.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Jackson Park United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Skipper Watwood, the Rev. Abe Cox and Dr. Loy Witherspoon. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Memorials: Hospice at Charlotte, 1420 East Seventh St., Charlotte, N.C. 28024; or Jackson Park United Methodist Church, 715 Mable Ave., Kannapolis, N.C. 28083.
