Loy David Dave BarrierCONCORD
Loy David Dave Barrier, 92, 114 Cline St., died Thursday (May 18, 2000)
at Brian Center, Mooresville, after three weeks of declining health.
Born Jan. 27, 1908, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Barrier was a
son of the late Tom and Margaret Hileman Barrier. He retired after many years from Cannon
Mills, Plant 1, machine shop.
A member of Brookdale Baptist Church, Kannapolis, he was a
former treasurer, deacon, choir member and Sunday school teacher and had been active in
various other phases of the church.
Survivors include wife Addie Lee Hathcock Barrier; daughter
Doris Barrier McBee, Newton; brother Bud Barrier, Concord; sisters Marie Phillips, China
Grove, Nell Fisher and Frances Moss, both of Kannapolis, and Elsie Johnson, Concord; two
grandsons; and one great-grandson.
Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Brookdale Baptist Church,
Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Ken Savage. The body will be placed in the church at
1:30. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7-8:30 Saturday, Whitleys Funeral Home,
Kannapolis. At other times the family will be at the home on Cline Street.

Coleen A. Furches
KING Coleen A. Furches, 70, 220 Pilot View Drive
died Thursday (May 18, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center,
Winston-Salem, after a period of declining health.
Born Oct. 31, 1929, in Rowan County, Mrs. Furches was a
daughter of Ethel Poteat Alexander, Kannapolis, and the late Clarence E. Alexander. A
member of First Baptist Church of King, she was a teacher and had retired after 30 years
from the Forsyth County School System.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband of 44
years Samuel W. Furches Jr.; daughter Lynn F. Newell, King; son Samuel Wade Furches III,
Salisbury; sister Helen Blackwelder, Charlotte; brothers Leonard Alexander, Gastonia, Troy
Alexander, Albemarle, and Bob Alexander, Wilmington; and three grandchildren.
Services: 6 p.m. Saturday, First Baptist Church of King,
conducted by the Rev. Jack Border and Dr. James Baldwin. Graveside, 9 a.m. Sunday, King
Memorial Park.
Visitation: On Saturday in the fellowship hall immediately
following the service.

Jeffie Odell Lanning
LINWOOD Jeffie Odell Lanning, 81, 598 Wilson Road,
died Wednesday (May 17, 2000) at Golden Age Nursing Home, Lexington.
Born July 31, 1918, in Davidson County, Mr. Lanning was a
son of the late Jeffie Lee and Ada Mae Leonard Lanning. He was a member of Friendship
Methodist Church and had retired from Churchland Feed Mill. A veteran, he served in the
U.S. Army during World War II.
Survivors include wife Lila Lanning; sons Wayne Lanning, of
the home, and Jerry Lanning, Lexington; brother Ray Lanning, Sanford; one granddaughter;
and one great-granddaughter.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel,
Lexington. Burial, Reeds Baptist Church cemetery. Military rites by Randolph County Honor
Guard.
Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other
times the family will be at the home.
Sarah Ruth Rich
Sarah Ruth Rich, 71, Salisbury, died Thursday (May 18,
2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a long illness.
Born June 6, 1928, in Davie County, Mrs. Rich was a
daughter of the late Adolphus and Maude Phelps Nichols. Educated in the Davie County
schools, she retired from Secon Metals. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
Survivors include husband Anthony Rich, whom she married
March 8, 1946; daughter Ruth Lozano, Salisbury; sister Reba McIntyre, Woodleaf; and six
grandchildren.
The body has been cremated. No services are planned.

Cletus Sloop Shuffler
Cletus Sloop Shuffler, 91, Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks,
Salisbury, died Thursday (May 18, 2000) at the nursing home, after eight months of
declining health.
Born July 24, 1908, in Rowan County, Mrs. Shuffler was a
daughter of the late C.W. and McBertha Sechler Sloop. A homemaker, she was a member of St.
Marks Lutheran Church, China Grove.
Survivors include brother David R. Sloop, Alpine, Calif.;
and sisters Doris Guffy and Louise Warner, both of Salisbury, and Bernice Kennerly, China
Grove.

Molly Price Sutton
KANNAPOLIS Molly Price Sutton, 1434 W. A St., died
Thursday (May 18, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after a period of declining
health.
Born Sept. 7, 1913, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs.
Sutton was a daughter of the late Clayton and Ola Griggs Price. She retired in 1986 after
many years from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, wash cloth department. She was a member of Lakewood
Baptist Church and a former member of Rowan County Senior Citizens Club.
Her husband, Earl Sutton, died in 1987.
Survivors include brother George F. Price, Kannapolis; and
sisters Emma Kirkley, Charlotte, Gladys Hancock and Vonzille Oliver, both of Ruby, S.C.,
and Mildred Newton, Chesterfield, S.C.

Duke Monroe Wilhelm
Duke Monroe Wilhelm, 85, formerly of 6405 Old Concord Road,
died Thursday (May 18, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury.
Born Oct. 16, 1914, in Rowan County, Mr. Wilhelm was a son
of the late Ernest Franklin and Grace Brown Wilhelm. Educated in the Rowan County schools,
he retired in 1976 as the supervisor at Cannon Mills, sheet department.
He was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, where
he was active in the church council and the Mens Bible Class and served on numerous
committees.
His first wife, Mertie Deal Wilhelm, died in 1953.
Survivors include wife Ethel Watts Wilhelm, The Laurels of
Salisbury; sons Coy, Paul, Wayne and Charles Wilhelm, all of Salisbury, and Hugh Wilhelm,
Rockwell; stepdaughter Doris W. Parks, Kannapolis; brother Hoke Wilhelm, Rockwell; sisters
Katie W. Bost and Ruth W. Morgan, both of China Grove, and Doris W. Derrick, Irmo, S.C.;
eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, St. Pauls Lutheran
Church, conducted by the Rev. William Ketchie. Burial, church cemetery.

Lois Bowers Womble
Lois Bowers Womble, 68, 1117 Holmes St., died Thursday (May
18, 2000) at her home.
Born Jan. 17, 1932, in Rowan County, Mrs. Womble was a
daughter of the late Bennett L. and Thelma Overcash Bowers. She had attended Boyden High
School.
A member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church, she had been
employed with Innes Street Drug Store and with Towne Pharmacy as a pharmacy technician for
over 10 years.
Survivors include husband Harold R. Womble; sons Kevin L.
Womble, Salisbury, and Kenneth W. Womble, Spencer; daughter Heather Michelle Womble,
Orlando, Fla.; brothers Charles W. Bowers, Salisbury, and John M. Bowers, Pace, Fla.;
sister Sue Benson, Salisbury; and two grandchildren.
