Marvin Boyden Allman

The funeral will be Friday for Marvin Boyden Allman, 65, North Highlands, Calif., who died Friday (May 12, 2000) at his home.

Born Oct. 16, 1934, in Rowan County, N.C., Mr. Allman was a son of the late Harvey J. and Mabel Irene Allman Canaday. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had worked in aerospace support technology. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force.

Survivors include wife Betty Harkey Allman, whom he married Jan. 3, 1955; son Marvin Boyden Allman Jr., North Highlands, Calif.; daughters Sandra Allman Garcia, Pamela Ann Allman and Phyllis Yvonne Allman, all of North Highlands, Calif.; half brother Sheriff Robert Canaday, Concord, N.C.; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 1 p.m. Friday, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell, N.C., conducted by a brother-in-law, the Rev. Don Harkey. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell, N.C.

 

Shirley Miles Bolden

The funeral will be Friday for Shirley Mae Miles Bolden, 53, 830 Lincolnton Road, who died Monday (May 15, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born April 30, 1947, in Richland, Wash., Mrs. Bolden was a daughter of the late Artis and Bernice Weaver Miles. Educated in the Richland,Wash., schools, she was a nurse with Olsen Kimberly Health Center and a member of JerusalemBaptist Church.

Survivors include brothers Taylor R., Theartis, Donnell, Ennis and Curtis Miles, all of Pasco, Wash.; and sisters Opal Andrews, Evelyn, LaWanda and Gwen Miles, all of Pasco, Wash., Jeanette Sparks, Los Angeles, Calif., Bobbie R. Miles, Tacoma, Wash., and Theresa Miles, Salisbury.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, Pasco, Wash. Burial, City View Cemetery, Pasco, Wash.

Visitation: None. The family will receive friends beginning at noon Thursday at the home of sister Theresa Miles, 610 Harrell St.

Gilbert Lourico Brown

The funeral will be Thursday for Gilbert Lourico Brown, 77, 325 N. Oakhurst Drive, who died Tuesday (May 9, 2000) at Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury, after several years of declining health.

Born June 29, 1922, in Davie County, Mr. Brown was a son of the late Guy and Nannie Knox Brown. Educated in the Davie County schools, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

He was employed by Yadkin Finishing Co. and had retired from the Housing Authority. He was a member of Hall’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Mary Krider Brown.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Hall’s Chapel Primitive Baptist Church, conducted by Elder Richard Johnson, pastor. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury. Military rites by Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 12:30-1 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Mabel Baxter Carlton

MOORESVILLE — Mabel Baxter Carlton, 76, 560 N. Broad St., died Monday (May 15, 2000).

Born in Kannapolis, Mrs.Carlton was the daughter of the late William Houston and Bessie Malcolm Baxter. Retired from Troutman Shirt Co., she was a member of First Wesleyan Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, FrankCarlton, and a daughter, Barbara Smith McClain.

Survivors include daughter Judy Carlton Golden, Anderson, S.C.; sons Gary Carlton, Mooresville, and Tim Carlton, Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, First Wesleyan Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles Patton and the Rev. Paul Titus. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Dorothy Lomax Ross

KANNAPOLIS — Dorothy Lomax Ross, 73, 134 Greenview Drive, died Tuesday (May 16, 2000) at her home after six weeks of serious illness.

Hazel Fink

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Thursday for Hazel Hardy Fink, 73, 500 E. 10th St., who died Monday (May 15, 2000) at her home.

Born Aug. 18, 1926, in Bassett, Va., Mrs. Fink was a daughter of the late Robert Dillard and Betty Kate Land Hardy. She had been employed at What-a-Burger No. 1.

Her husband, Billy Ray Fink, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Kathy Garcia, of the home, and Billie Hardin, Rockwell; sister Naomi Kerley, Salisbury; four grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Elder Rom Kerley and the Rev. Earl Hardin. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on East 10th Street.

Jerry William Griffin

CHINA GROVE — Jerry William Griffin, 57, 2470 Cannon Farm Road, died Tuesday (May 16, 2000) at his home.

Born March 6, 1943, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Griffin was a son of Margaret Wilson Griffin, Kannapolis, and the late Roy Griffin. Employed by Pillowtex Fieldcrest-Cannon Inc., he was a supervisor at plant 1 slasher room. He was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, where he was active with the Methodist Men.

He was preceded in death by son, James Douglas Griffin, and a granddaughter.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Dana W. “Dink” Griffin; son Michael Wayne Griffin, Kannapolis; daughter Alicia Deree Griffin, Kannapolis; and two grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Memorial United Methodist Church, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Otis Snow and the Rev. Randy Foster. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Berlie M. McConnell

DENVER — Berlie McAlister McConnell, 84, 5400 Nome Trail, died Tuesday (May 16, 2000) at Lincoln Medical Center.

Born May 25, 1915, in Lincoln County, Mrs. McConnell was a daughter of the late Lucian B. and Ida Moose McAlister. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Joel McConnell, died Nov. 25, 1995. She was also preceded in death by daughter Jo Ann McConnell, a grandson and great-great-granddaughter.

Survivors include sons J.W. McConnell, Denver, and David McConnell, Maiden; daughters Joyce Alexander, Conover, Celeste Helms, Shirley Canipe and Patsy Sherrill, all of Maiden, and Alene Elliott and Pam Poole, both of Denver; brother Roy McAlister, Mooresville; sisters Leslie McAlister, Huntersville, Laura Jane Whitley, Layfette, Ala., Neffie Hager, Mooresville, and Neomia Mashburn, Denver; 20 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, Webb’s Chapel United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ted Hendrix and the Rev. Lonnie Ramsey. The body will be placed in the church at 3:30. Entombment, Forest Lawn Mausoleum.

Mary Henley Monroe

Mary Henley Monroe, Salisbury, died Tuesday (May 16, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare of Salisbury.

Born in Rowan County, Mrs. Monroe was a daughter of the late Spencer Edward and Bernice Henley Burgess. She was a graduate of Spencer High School and Salisbury Business College. She had worked as a secretary at Salisbury Mills and later at Cone Mills for 25 years.

She was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, Episcopal Church Women and the Altar Guild. She was also a member of Salisbury Woman’s Club and Charity League.

Survivors include husband Albert R. Monroe.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Thursday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. John Southern Jr. The body will be cremated and the ashes placed in the church columbarium.

Visitation: After the service in the St. Agnes Room of the church. At other times the family will be at the home of Claude Burnham, 130 W. Colonial Drive.

Dillard Oren Passmore

MOORESVILLE — Dillard Oren Passmore, 65, Mackwood Road, died Tuesday (May 16, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 8, 1934, in Nantahala, Mr. Passmore was a son of the late Fred A. and Artie Morgan Passmore. An equipment operator, he retired from Passmore Grading Co. He was a member of Mount Mourne Church of God.

Survivors include wife Teresa Oates Passmore; children Cathy Brotherton and Sharon Tucker, both of Texas, Wanda Furgerson, Georgia, and Karen Passmore, Mooresville; brothers James and Jerry Passmore, both of Mooresville, and Fred Passmore, Davidson; sisters Lolita Goodman and Dora Jones, both of Mooresville; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Mount Mourne Church of God, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Ownbey. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville.

CATAWBA — Jimmie Allison “Jim”Reed, 82, 7644 Monbo Road, died Tuesday (May 16, 2000) at Hefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury.

Laurene Bralley Ross

CHARLOTTE — Laurene Bralley Ross, 52, 325 Rhyne Road, died Sunday (May 14, 2000) at Carolinas Medical Center.

Born Dec. 17, 1947, in Wytheville, Va., Mrs. Ross was a daughter of the late Thomas Alva and Mary Bridges Bralley. She was a graduate of George Wythe High School and received a degree in secretarial science from Wytheville Community College. She owned and operated Art-N-Frames on Old Mount Holly Road.

She and her husband, Harry J. Ross, acquired many exotic birds.

Survivors, in addition to her husband, include daughters Tammy Cameron, Salisbury, and Angela D. Addiar, Cleveland; sons Willie L. Rice, Wytheville, Va., and Thomas F. Rice, Jacksonville, Fla.; stepchildren Carol Ann Cox, Smyrna, Del., Donald A. Ross, Sacramento, Calif., Rebecca Jewel Ross and Debra Pacula, Absecon, N.J., and Stephen A. Ross, Holden Beach; sister Elizabeth Frye, Wytheville, Va.; brothers Tom Bralley Jr. and Maurice Bralley, both of Wytheville, Va., and Charles Bralley, Elkton, Md.; and seven grandchildren.

Viola Cassidy Brown

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Thursday for Viola Cassidy Brown, 80, 5220 Highway 152 W., who died Tuesday (May 16, 2000) at Concord Nursing and Rehabilitation, Concord, after two months of declining health and three weeks of serious illness.

Born May 18, 1919, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs. Brown was a daughter of the late Zadie and Rilly Eddings Cassidy. She retired in 1982 from Cannon Mills plant 1 No. 6 weave room, Kannapolis. A Methodist, she attended Boulevard Chapel in Kannapolis.

Her husband, Colon Taft Brown, died July 22, 1982. She was also preceded in death by sons Douglas and Larry Brown.

Survivors include daughters Willie Faye Morris,Hartsville, S.C., and Frances Helms, Concord; sons Joe Brown, China Grove, and Carroll, Charles and David Brown, all of Salisbury, and Taft Legrand Brown, Kannapolis; sisters Essie Atkinson, Ruby, S.C., Almae Cassidy, Kannapolis, and Pearline Moore, China Grove; 23 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Raymond Bailey and the Rev. Pearlie Peterson. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Taft Brown, 6019 Charlie Walker Road, Kannapolis.
