‘Children of Eden’ explores parent-child relationships

SALISBURY POST

Piedmont Players’ production of the musical “Children of Eden,”opens tonight for a two-week run at the Meroney Theater.

Patterned loosely on Biblical stories from the book of Genesis, from the Creation and Adam and Eve through the time of Noah and the flood, a cast of nearly 50 men, women and children from around the area brings the play to life.

Based on a concept by Charles Lisanby, the book for the musical is by John Caird and the music and lyrics are by Stephen Schwartz, who also wrote the music and lyrics for the musical “Godspell”and the Disney movies “Pocahontas” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Schwartz scores another hit with “Children of Eden,”presenting an array of songs which include soaring ballads, foot-stomping gospel, calypso and even a catchy production number for the serpent.

“Children”follows the timeless stories of Genesis, focusing on relationships, particularly between parents and children. With warmth, humor and thoughtfulness, the production portrays these first parent-child relationships. In joyous and poignant story and song, the struggles and pleasures of the bonds between parents and children are explored and celebrated.

Producing partner for the show is Rowan Health and Fitness Center. Performances are May 11-13 and 17-20 at 7:30 p.m., with a matinee Sunday, May 14, at 2:30 p.m. Advance ticket prices are $12 for adults, $10 for children, students and seniors age 62 and older. At-the-door tickets (if available) are $14 for adults and $12 for children, students and seniors. This show is appropriate for all ages. For more information or for tickets, call 633-5471.
