John BarbeeCONCORD The funeral will
be Friday for John Ralph Barbee, 92, 3031 Barr Road, who died Tuesday (May 9, 2000) at
Hunter Woods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Charlotte, after two months of declining
health.
Born July 29, 1907, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Barbee was a
son of the late H.T. and Beadia Louvina Furr Barbee. He had retired after 50 years with
Hugh Grey Hosiery Mill (now Kayser-Roth Hosiery Co.) He was a member of Meadow Creek
Primitive Baptist Church, Stanly County.
His wife, Margaret Whitley Barbee, died June 22, 1996.
Survivors include daughters Vicki and Doris Benton, both of
Concord; sons Bobby R. Barbee, Charlotte, Harry Barbee, Kannapolis, and Fred and Henry
Barbee, both of Concord; sisters Trecie Smith, Charlotte, Helen Mesimer, Concord, and
Jessie Barbee, Kannapolis; brothers Homer Barbee, Davidson, and H.T. Barbee Jr., Concord;
15 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Milly Wagoner Cooper
The funeral will be Friday for Mildred Milly
Wagoner Cooper, 60, 120 Lancelot Road, who died Tuesday (May 9, 2000) at Carolinas Medical
Center, Charlotte, after a year of illness.
Born Nov. 12, 1939, in Salisbury, Mrs. Cooper was a
daughter ofMary Ellese Bost Wagoner, Salisbury, and the late Kenneth L. Wagoner.
A graduate of Boyden High School, she received a
bachelors degree in nursing fromDuke University and a masters degree in
business administration from Queens College, Charlotte.
Mrs. Cooper worked with the N.C. Department of Health and
Human Services as director of public health and regional public health nurse consultant.
She was previously employed in various capacities at the Rowan County Health Department.
She was a member of the American Public Health Association,
the N.C. Public Health Nurse Association, the N.C. Consultant Conference and the N.C.
Association of Public Health Nurse Administrators.
She had also served on the board of directors of Hospice of
Rowan County. Chairperson of the Rowan County Nursing Home Communitys advisory
committee, she served on the board of directors of Rowan Homes. She was a member of Haven
Lutheran Church and the Altrusa Club.
Survivors include husband James L. Jim Cooper,
whom she married Dec. 18, 1960; son Keith Wagoner Cooper, Colorado Springs, Colo.;
daughter Susan Marsh Cooper, Salisbury; and sisters Peggy Mowery, Sharon Whittington and
Ginny Cochran, all of Salisbury, and Christine Rich, New Smyrna Beach, Fla.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Haven Lutheran Church, conducted
by the Rev. Ronald Fink and the Rev. A. Glenn Boland. Members of the Altrusa Club will be

Chuck McManus, chief of police in Albemarle
ALBEMARLE Charles Chuck Blease McManus,
48, 508 Knollwood Circle, died Wednesday (May 10, 2000) at his home.
Born March 11, 1952, in Union County, Mr. McManus was a son
of Thelma Helms Haigler, Wingate, and the late Collel B. McManus. A 1970 graduate of
Forest Hill High School, he had been chief of police in Albemarle since 1987.
He began his career as a deputy sheriff in Union County.
From 1972-1987, he worked for the Monroe Police Department, where he reached the rank of
lieutenant.
Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Terri
Lathan McManus; son Bryan McManus, Raleigh, daughter Christi B. McManus, of the home;
brother Mike McManus, Charlotte; sister Peggy Wiggins, Monroe; and stepfather Gagel
Haigler, Wingate.

Sara Sloop Morrow
MOORESVILLE Sara Sloop Morrow, 85, Wiggins Road,
died Tuesday (May 9, 2000) at her home.
Born Sept. 20, 1914, in Iredell County, Mrs. Morrow was a
daughter of the late Lon Gip and Minnie Poole Sloop. A member of Triplett United Methodist
Church, she had been a Sunday school teacher, church historian and president of the United
Methodist Women. She was also a member of the Mazeppa Home Demonstration Club.
Her husband, Carl Alexander Morrow, died in October 1981.
She was also preceded in death by two granddaughters.
Survivors include sons Carl Alex Morrow Jr.,
Gulf Shores, Ala., George Reid Morrow, Cheraw, S.C., and Morris Grier Morrow,
Winston-Salem; sisters Rachel Brawley, Mooresville, and Lorene Owens, Cleveland; brother

Nellie Mills Patterson
CLEVELAND Nellie Mills Patterson, 95, 220 Serenity
Drive, died Wednesday (May 10, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a
lengthy illness.
Born Dec. 11, 1904, in Rowan County, Mrs. Patterson was a
daughter of the late Thomas and Mary Jane Cowan Mills. A graduate of the Rowan County
schools, she had retired as a nurses aide.
She was a member of Mount Tabor Presbyterian Church (USA),
where she was involved with the United Presbyterian Women, the senior choir and the
trustee board. Also a member of West Rowan Senior Citizens, she was a past worthy matron
with the Order of the Eastern Star.
Her husband, Oscar Lee Patterson, died March 22, 1984. A
son, Arthur Lee Patterson, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include sons James Patterson, Brooklyn, N.Y.,
Scott M. Patterson and Oscar Lee Patterson Jr., both of Cleveland, Howard C. Patterson,
Queens, N.Y., Benjamin F. Patterson, Stony Point, George A. Patterson, Somerset, N.J., and
Clifford E. Patterson, of the home; daughters Ollie P. Byers, Troutman, Lizzie Barber,

Reid, 85, 207 W. McCubbins St., who died Wednesday (May 10, 2000) at Spencer Health Care,
Spencer, after three weeks of serious illness.
Born March 17, 1915, in Rowan County, Mr. Reid was a son of
the late C. George and Mamie Springs Reid and the stepson of the late Savannah Torrence
Reid. He graduated from J.C. Price High School and Rowan-Cabarrus Community College.
Retired from Southern Railway and Livingstone College, he
was a lifelong member of Gethesemane Baptist Church and a former member of the Lakewood
Sluggers baseball team.
Survivors include wife Beulah Currence Reid; son Melvin
George Reid Jr., Brandywine, Md.; daughters Mary A. Reid Gill, Fayetteville, and Betty

Michael Sealey
William Michael Sealey, 52, Salisbury, died Wednesday (May
10, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health.
Born April 29, 1948, in Rowan County, Mr. Sealey was a son
of the late William Marvin and Phyllis Gantt Sealey. Educated in the Rowan County schools,
he was a graduate of North Carolina State University.
Mr. Sealey was maintenance supervisor at Swagnit and a
member of Haven Lutheran Church.

Raymond C. Shadrick
The funeral will be Friday for Raymond Clarence Shadrick,
84, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (May 9, 2000) at his home.
Born May 15, 1915, in Forsyth County, Mr. Shadrick was a
son of the late David Franklin and Sarah Ella Peak Shadrick. He was educated in the
Winston-Salem schools.
He had worked for Norfolk-Southern Railway for 12 years and
was later employed by Rowan Office Furniture. He was a former member of Winston-Salem
Church of Christ.
His wife, Annie Louise Vaden Shadrick, died Jan. 9, 1998.

Born May 19, 1938, in Danville, Va., Mrs. Crainshaw was a
daughter of the late Clyde Alonzo and Lottie Poole Wright. A homemaker, she was a member
of Second Presbyterian Church.
She was preceded in death by a son, Marty Wayne Crainshaw.
