Clarence ‘Monk’ Jackson

The funeral will be Thursday for Clarence “Monk” Jackson, 76, Brightmoor Nursing Center, who died Saturday (May 6, 2000) at the center.

Born April 13, 1924, in Gaston County, Mr. Jackson had retired from the City of Salisbury sanitation department.

A daughter, Louise Clark, died Jan. 18, 2000.

Survivors include sons Andrew, Richard and James Jackson, all of Salisbury; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, Oakwood Cemetery, conducted by Ron Stallings.

Visitation: None. The body may be viewed at Rowan Funeral Service. The family will be at the home of Richard Jackson, 1016 Scales St.

 

John R. Barbee

CONCORD — John R. Barbee, 92, 3031 Barr Road, died Tuesday (May 9, 2000).

Lady’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.

 

‘Milly’ Wagoner Cooper

Mildred “Milly”Wagoner Cooper, 120 Lancelot Drive, died Tuesday (May 9, 2000) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Mary Alexander Corriher

CHINA GROVE — A memorial service will be held Thursday for Mary Alexander Corriher, 82, Shue Road, who died Monday (May 8, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center following a three-week illness.

A native of Landis, she was born July 3, 1917, the daughter of the late John Ulysses and Fannie Kirk Alexander. She was a graduate of Landis High School and Salisbury Business College.

Mrs. Corriher and her husband, the late J. Fred Corriher, president of Linn-Corriher Corp., in Landis, were known for their generosity in many areas.

On May 5, Catawba College, where her son, J. Fred Corriher Jr. is president, dedicated her gift of a set of 37 Malmark handbells during baccalaureate services at the chapel. Last year, she made a $200,000 unrestricted gift to the college in memory of her husband.

Earlier gifts have provided funds for the J. Fred and Mary A. Corriher First Family Scholarship, the Seiwell Chapel Green, the sound system and carillon in the chapel and the renovation of the president’s office.

She has also given to First United Church of Christ, formerly the Evangelical and Reformed Church of Landis, the Blowing Rock Assembly Grounds and the South Rowan YMCA.

A lifelong member of First United Church of Christ, she attended regularly and had served as Sunday school teacher, director of Vacation Bible School and as deacon and elder.

For many years she served on the board of trustees of Blowing Rock Assembly Grounds, where the lodge is named in honor of her and her husband. During the 1960s, she was chairman of the Rowan County Cancer Drive.

Survivors include another son Eugene A. Corriher, Landis; sisters Vertie Lipe, Della Mae Alexander and Margaret Jane Hoke, all of Landis; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 6 p.m. Thursday, Omwake-Dearborn Chapel at Catawba College.

Visitation: After the service in the narthex of the chapel and at Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, 6:30-8:30 tonight.

Memorials: Catawba College Chapel Ministry Fund, Catawba College, 2300 W. Innes St., Salisbury, N.C., 28144.

 

Raymond C. Shadrick

Raymond Clarence Shadrick, Salisbury, died Tuesday (May 9, 2000) at his home.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge. The family will be at the home of daughter Mrs. Jerry (Brenda)Holder.
