Paul James Barbee

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Thursday for Paul James Barbee, 65, 804 Walker St., who died Monday (May 1, 2000) at his home.

Born Aug. 4, 1934, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Barbee was a son of the late Barry and Flossie Ballard Barbee. He had retired from Fieldcrest Cannon’s return department after 44 years with the company.

A member of Shadybrook Baptist Church, he served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.

Survivors include wife Shirley Johnson Barbee; daughter Kelly Barbee, Kannapolis; and brother Ralph Barbee, Midland.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Mike Hubbard and the Rev. Kirk Sams. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Bessie Cook Butler

Bessie Cook Butler, 97, formerly of 407 Heilig Ave., died Tuesday (May 2, 2000) at the Salisbury Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Born Dec. 28, 1902, in Rowan County, Mrs. Butler was a daughter of the late David Franklin and Lucy Ann Haithcock Cook. Educated in the Salisbury schools, she was a member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church. She had retired in 1964 from Cone Mills.

Her husband, Hiram Francis Butler, died Sept. 1, 1952.

Survivors include daughter Mildred B. Brittain, Salisbury; sister Grace C. Satterwhite, Salisbury; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two step-great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Thursday, Summersett Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Mark Anders, pastor, Stallings Memorial Baptist Church. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Ralph W. Cassell

BLYTHEWOOD, S.C. —Ralph W. Cassell, 80, North Pine Road, died Sunday (April 30, 2000) at Palmetto Baptist Medical Center, Columbia.

Born Aug. 19, 1919, in Carroll County, Va., Mr. Cassell was a son of the late John Kemper and Mary Jane Bowman Cassell. A self-employed shoe repairman in his early life, he had retired from Fiber Industries (now KoSa) in Salisbury, N.C.

A member of Peace Haven Baptist Church, Yadkinville, N.C., he attended Victory Baptist Church in Columbia. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was a member of VFWPost 10346 in Yadkinville, N.C.

His wife, Marjorie Bentley Cassell, preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughters Alice Cassell Mann and Martha Cassell, both of Blythewood; sisters Hassie Turner and Betty Jo Farris, both of Hillsville, Va., and Lucille Edwards, Dublin, Va.; six grandsons; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 today, Gentry Family Funeral Service Chapel, Yadkinville, N.C., conducted by the Rev. Bruce Freeman and the Rev.Odell Chappell. Burial, Harmony Grove Friends Church cemetery, also in Yadkinville, with military rites by Yadkin VFW Post 10346.

 

Georgia Williams Daniel

Georgia Williams Daniel, 52, Salisbury, died Tuesday (May 2, 2000) at her home.

Daniel M. Herrin Jr.

Daniel M. Herrin Jr., a native of Rowan County, died Sunday (April 30, 2000) at his home at San Clemente, Calif.

Born June 23, 1922, Mr. Herrin was a son of the late Daniel M. and Bernice Lowder Herrin. He was a graduate of China Grove High School.

Mr. Herrin entered the U.S. Army prior to World War II and was twice wounded. He later transferred to the U.S. Air Force, serving a total of 35 years in the military before retiring as a colonel.

He later served as assistant director of plans and development at Ohio State University, then went to Saudi Arabia as director of Al Hada Hospital for the Royal Family Taif.

Survivors include wife Leasel Herrin; daughter Sandi Farrar, Tampa, Fla.; sisters Doris Rota, New Castle, Wash., Peggy Rary, Salisbury, and Joyce Clark,Germanton; brothers Cecil Herrin, Statesville, and Gerald Herrin, Salisbury; three grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.

Services: The body was cremated. Burial with military honors will be held at 11 a.m. May 8 at the National Cemetery in San Diego.

Memorials: Donor’s choice of Hospice or other organization.

 

Grace Woelke Hobson

Grace Woelke Hobson, 84, Salisbury, died Tuesday (May 2, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 12, 1916, in Hudson County, N.J., Mrs. Hobson was a daughter of the late William and Katherine Herbert Woelke. A homemaker, she was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Her husband, William M. Hobson, died Dec. 20, 1990.

Survivors include sister Mrs. John (June)Matkovich, Charlotte.

Services: 1 p.m. Thursday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Clements. Entombment, Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

 

Samuel Edward Kenerly

Samuel Edward Kenerly, 88, Salisbury, died Tuesday (May 2, 2000) at the Hefner VAMedical Center.

Bernice M. Lakey

MOCKSVILLE — Bernice McClamrockLakey, 96, Roland Road, Farmington community, died Tuesday (May 2, 2000) at her home after several years of declining health.

Born March 21, 1904, in Davie County, Mrs. Lakey was a daughter of the late John Dewitt and Laura Louise Etchison McClamrock. She was a homemaker.

Her husband, Roland Winfrey Lakey, died in 1979.

Survivors include son Bobby Gene Lakey, Farmington; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Thursday, Farmington Community Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Barry Vernon and the Rev. Greg Little.

Visitation: None. The family will receive friends at the home on Roland Road.

Becky Lashmit

LEXINGTON — Eva Rebecca “Becky” Broadway Lashmit, 63, 815 S. Hargrave St., died Monday (May 1, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born June 8, 1936, in Davie County, Mrs. Lashmit was a daughter of Ruby Victoria Gales Broadway, Mocksville, and the late John William Hedrick “Bud” Broadway.

A former employee of Drexel Heritage, she was a member of No Creek Primitive Baptist Church of Fork and Disabled American Veterans.

She was preceded in death by a son, Leslie Buddy West, and a grandson.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband Harold Daniel Lashmit; daughter Rebecca Jane “Janie” Swanson, Lexington; son Leslie Clay West, Mocksville; sisters Ethel Louise Dockery, North Wilkesboro, Mary Elizabeth Gregory, Mocksville, and Hazel Jane Waugh, Claremont; brothers William Hedrick and Arnold Ray Broadway, both of Mocksville; stepdaughters Teresa Lashmit and Donna Eaton, both of Lexington; stepsons Robert and Ronnie Lashmit, both of Lexington; three grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Timberlake Chapel, Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Jimmy Lancaster. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

KANNAPOLIS — Loretta Mae Hart Potts, 65, 1719 Brook Ave., died Monday (May 1, 2000) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation,Salisbury, after several years of declining health and a year of serious illness.

Born March 16, 1935, in Washington County, Va., Mrs. Potts was a daughter of the late Vascum O. and Lockey Osborne Hart. A homemaker, she formerly attended Near the Cross Freewill Baptist Church and taught Sunday school at Clermont Freewill Baptist Church.

Survivors include husband Archie Lee Potts; and son Lee Potts, Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Raymond Ross and the Rev. Chuck Overcash Jr. Burial, Sunset Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Brook Avenue.

 

Ruby Jean Cotton Watson

SOUTHMONT — The funeral will be Thursday for Ruby Jean Cotton Watson, 75, 554 Ave. K, who died Sunday (April 30, 2000) at her home.

She was employed at Lexington Furniture Industries, Lexington.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, First Baptist Church, Southmont. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Ross Wilson Jr.

The funeral will be Friday for Ross Wilson Jr., 15, 715 N. Lee St., who died Sunday (April 30, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after a period of declining health.

Born Sept. 25, 1984, in Rowan County, the youth was the son of Deidre Gill and Ross Wilson, both of Salisbury. He was an eighth-grader at North Rowan Middle School and a member of Church of God in Christ, Greensboro.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include stepmother Barbara Wilson, Salisbury; brother Charles Jason Turner, of the home; sisters Rossanne Wilson, Salisbury, and Jennifer Nunn and Rashonda Heggins, both of Cleveland; maternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Johnny Woods, of the home; and paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Claude Allen, Salisbury.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, First Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. L.E. Brown. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Friday at the church.
