Tar Heels no joke

SALISBURY POST

If they awarded Oscars for best script in the NCAA tournament, North Carolina would be the hands-down winner.

Capping a roller-coaster season that had fans screaming for the head of coach Bill Guthridge, the Tar Heels fizzled in the first round of the ACC tournament, appeared unlikely to even make the March Madness cut, and finally squeaked in as a lowly 8th seed given little chance of going anywhere but home.

Instead, they’re going to Indianapolis for a record 15th Final Four appearance. After four consecutive wins, the underdog is suddenly a stunning overachiever, and Bill Guthrie looks positively brilliant for bringing the team to its peak at the perfect moment.

We’ll make no predictions about the outcome of this tale. North Carolina is still very much the underdog against 5th-seeded Florida. But it’s worth noting the semi-finals fall this year on April 1 — and this Tar Heels team has been fooling opponents (along with their own fans) all the way through this tournament.
