April events focus on preventing abuse

Blue ribbons, a parade, a poster contest, and special training sessions will be held in April as part of “Child Abuse/Sexual Assault Prevention Awareness Month.”

The activities begin on Saturday with a health fair sponsored by the Hispanic Health Alliance from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the China Grove Medical Mall, 308 E. Centerview St.

Various county agencies will participate in the fair, which targets the rapidly increasing Hispanic population in the southern area of the county.

The Alliance, organized by Rowan Regional Medical Center, is developing programs for improved health care, education and wellness services for Hispanics.

For more information about the fair, call Alliance Coordinator Maria Soler at 637-7645.

On Monday evening, area law enforcement officers will join in promotion of child abuse prevention with a ribbon tying session at the Davis parking lot across from the Rowan Justice Center.

During the “Blue Ribbon for Kids Kick-off,” students will tie ribbons on the antennas of police cars which will be driven through the lot, with blue lights flashing.

Each car will get a blue ribbon for child abuse awareness and a white ribbon for sexual assault awareness.

On Sunday, April 9, an all-day domestic violence training session will be held at the Rowan Rescue Squad building on Julian Road, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Saturday, April 15, has been designated the “Day of the Young Child,” with a fair at the Civic Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Booths from various agencies will provide information and assistance.

A parade, designed to call more attention to child abuse prevention, will be held on Saturday, April 29, starting at 10 a.m. near the Rowan Justice Center, and going down Main Street to Stallings Baptist Church.

Officials said the entire street will be blocked off during that time period to accommodate the hundreds of marchers who will participate.

During the entire month, students in schools across the county will compete in a poster contest.

Winning posters will be hung at the Waterworks Visual Arts Center and an awards reception will be held there on May 19.

For more information on any of the events, contact the Rowan Social Services Department at 633-4921.
