Odessa Knight Branson

MOCKSVILLE — Odessa Knight Wood Branson, 88, Meadowbrook Terrace of Davie, died Thursday (March 30, 2000) at the nursing center.

Born Jan. 12, 1912, in Rockingham, Mrs. Branson was a daughter of the late Oscar Knight and NonaVaughn Knight Plott. She had retired in 1979 as a certified nursing assistant at N.C. Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem. She was a member of Green Meadows Baptist Church.

Her first husband, Leonard S. Wood, died in 1963, and her second husband, Harvey L. Branson, died in 1976.

Survivors include son Robert E. Wood, Charlotte; daughter Mrs. John (Linda W.) Seats, Farmington; sister Mary Alexander, Canton; eight grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Green Meadows Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. M. Ray Davis and the Rev. Kenneth Hyde. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: At the church after the service.

Ella Bratcher Caldwell

The funeral will be Saturday for Ella Mae Bratcher Caldwell, 55, 520 S. Clay St., who died Tuesday (March 28, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Aug. 31, 1944, in Reidsville, Mrs. Caldwell was a daughter of the late Maeomi Murray. A graduate of Dunbar High School, she was a member of Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church. She was a home day-care provider.

Survivors include her husband, Jay Caldwell; sons Derrick and Shawn Bratcher, both of Salisbury, Michael Bratcher, Petersburg, Va., and Javon Caldwell, of the home; brothers Samuel Kennedy Jr., Greenville, S.C., and O’Neal Kennedy, Washington, D.C.; and 13 grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Gethsemane Missionary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. James L. Stowe. Burial,Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2:30-3 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Pearlie Brooks Carter

The funeral will be Saturday for Pearlie Brooks Carter, 74, 115 Ridge Ave., who died Wednesday (March 29, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital,Charlotte.

Born Feb. 15, 1926, in Scotland County, Mrs. Carter was a daughter of the late Thomas Parish and Ruby Brooks. Educated in the Scotland County schools, she had retired from Linn Mills.

A member of Old Fashion Gospel Tabernacle Church, she was involved in mission work for 11 years.

Her husband, Carl Bruce Carter, died Sept. 29, 1990. A daughter, Margaret Louise Carter, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Carl Duncan Carter, Supply, and David Bruce Carter, South Carolina; daughters Elizabeth C. Parker, Salisbury, Mary Louise Floyd, Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Saffron Nyoka Wetter, Concord; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Mark Keck. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Elizabeth Parker, 1125 Double Jay Lane, Salisbury.

 

Lillian Fesperman Correll

GOLD HILL — Lillian Fesperman Correll, 62, died Thursday (March 30, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Cynthia Atwell Graham

CONCORD — Cynthia Atwell Graham, 34, 3897 Grouse Drive, died Wednesday (March 29, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Feb. 5, 1966, Mrs. Graham was a daughter of Patsy Rogers Atwell, Concord, and the late Hugh Ronald “Ronnie” Atwell. She had formerly worked for the State Employees Credit Union in Concord.

She was later employed with CVSPharmacy on Brachview Drive in Concord until November 1999. She was a member of New Grace Baptist Church, where she worked with children.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include husband Todd D. Graham; brothers Wayne Atwell,Mooresville, and William Atwell, Charlotte; maternal grandmother Lucille Rogers, Mooresville; and paternal grandfather Frank Atwell, Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, New Grace Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Johnnie Morton and the Rev. Carl Settles. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Burial, Unity United Methodist Church cemetery.

Jesse Wade Harris

ALBEMARLE — Jesse Wade Harris, 93, 424 McGill Drive, died Thursday (March 30, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Feb. 23, 1907, in Davidson County, Mr. Wade was a son of the late William Turner and Dailie Daniel Harris. He was a member of First Baptist Church. He had retired as a manager with A&P after more than 40 years with the grocery chain.

His wife, Marie Cashatt Harris, died Nov. 27, 1993.

Survivors include daughters Margaret Johnson, Potomac, Md., and Nancy Harris, Winston-Salem; and a grandson.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Harold McDonald and the Rev. Charles Royal. The body will be placed in the church at 1:30. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Norman W. Huneycutt

MIDLAND — Norman Winfield Huneycutt, 71, 1401 Alvin Hough Road, died Thursday (March 30, 2000) at his home.

Born Nov. 28, 1928, in Stanly County, Mr. Huneycutt was a son of the late Robert Fare and Elizabeth Rebecca Russell Huneycutt. A retired forklift mechanic, he was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Concord. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.

Survivors include wife Florence Marie Kimrey Huneycutt; sons Jimmy Ray Huneycutt, David Winfield Huneycutt and Clayton Ivey, all of Midland, and Ken Lambert, Indian Trail; daughter Debbie Jane Hess, Dayton, Tenn.; sisters Cleona H. Shank, Ada H. Huneycutt and Gladys Huneycutt, all of Albemarle; and four grandchildren.

Robert ‘Bob’ Klock

Robert “Bob” Nicholas Klock, 79, Salisbury, died Wednesday (March 29, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after three years of declining health and two months of serious illness.

Frank Dalton ‘Tig’ Lee

LEXINGTON — The funeral will be Saturday for Frank Dalton “Tig” Lee, 87, Fuller Street, who died Saturday (March 25, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after an extended illness.

Born June 12, 1912, in Davidson County, Mr. Lee was a son of the late Felix and Lottie Hargrave Lee. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he had retired from Gordon Veneer Co.

Survivors include nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by Bishop Joe McIntosh. Burial, 10 a.m. Monday, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The body may be viewed from noon to 8 this evening and from 8:30 a.m. Saturday until the funeral. The family will be at the home on Fuller Street.

 

Mary Jessie McClain

HICKORY — Mary Jessie McClain, 893 Second Ave. Drive S.E., died Tuesday (March 28, 2000) at Pell Care Nursing Home after a long illness. She was the mother of Mrs. Robert (Rosie)Blackwell of Salisbury.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Allen Mitchell Funeral Home, Dennis Alvin Memorial Chapel. Burial, Southside Cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

 

Wilma S. Rogers

FAITH — Wilma S. Rogers, 96, a Rowan County native, died Monday (March 27, 2000) in Lake Worth, Fla., where she had lived for the past decade. She had lived in Faith most of her life.

A daughter of the late William Bickley and Margaret Bame Stirewalt, she taught piano in the public schools and gave private lessons. She was a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Her husband, Ray Rogers, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Patsy Rogers Varnadore, Hypoluxo, Fla.; sister Faye S. Andrew, Faith; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

The body was cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date at Faith Lutheran Church.

Thomas S. Secrest

CARY — Thomas S. Secrest, a native of Salisbury, died Thursday (March 30, 2000) after a brief illness.

Born Sept. 8, 1919, Mr. Secrest attended Clemson University and then served with the N.C. Highway Patrol. During World War II, he served in Patton’s 3rd Army and was awarded the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star.

He later served as assistant director of the License-Theft Enforcement Division of the Department of Motor Vehicles and executive secretary of the N.C. Democratic Party.

After retirement, he ran a real estate and insurance business. He was a longtime member of Cary Masonic Lodge 198.

Survivors include brother E. Russell Secrest, Cary; sons Sam Secrest, Cary, and Mark Secrest, Washington,D.C.; daughter Mrs. Fred (Debbie)Padgett, Cary; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Cary First United Methodist Church. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, Raleigh, Veterans section.

Alice Ameigh ValAlstine

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Sunday for Alice Marie Ameigh VanAlstine, 56, Lakewood Village Road, who died Wednesday (March 29, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, Winston-Salem.

Born Aug. 16, 1943, in Schuyler County, N.Y., Mrs. VanAlstine was a daughter of the late Irving and Freda Messenger Ameigh. She was a 1962 graduate of Watkins Glen Central High School, Watkins Glenn, N.Y.

A homemaker, she had formerly worked as a seamstress with Southeastern Sewing Services. She was a member of Green Meadow Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school, sang in the choir and served as an arts and crafts instructor for Bible school.

Survivors include husband Leon H. VanAlstine; sons Christopher James VanAlstine, Mocksville, and William Henry VanAlstine, of the home; daughters Ronda Lee Porter, Cooleemee, and Shelly Renee Minor, Advance; brother Irving Ameigh Jr., New York; sisters Anna Stanko, June Smith, Marion Brewer, Virginia Bower and Carolyn Sutfin, all of New York, and Lesa McClellan, Maryland; and eight grandchildren.

Services: Memorial graveside, 2 p.m. Sunday, Green Meadows Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Hyde.

Thomas Hall Waller

NEW LONDON — Thomas Hall Waller, 88, 36600 Millingport Road, died Wednesday (March 29, 2000) at his home.

Born Jan. 29, 1912, in Leaksville, Mr. Waller was a son of the late Sigmond P. and Nora Hall Waller. He had retired as production control manager with Collins &Aikman Corp., Albemarle.

A World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a lieutenant in an anti-aircraft division during the European campaign. A Mason, he was a member of Lodge 348 AF&AM and New Mount Tabor United Methodist Church.

Survivors include wife Josephine Whittaker Waller; sons Thomas H. Waller Jr., Greensboro, and John W. Waller, Ringgold, Ga.; daughters Mrs. Phil (Ann)Ryalls, Lexington, and Sarah Waller, Richfield; and five grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, New Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Byrd. Burial, church cemetery.

Bura White Williams

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Saturday for Bura White Williams, 82, 1005 Little John Trail, who died Wednesday (March 29, 2000) at her home.

Born Feb. 9, 1918, in Alexander County, Mrs. Williams was a daughter of the late J.F. and Matilda Brown White. She had retired in 1984 after 42 years withCannon Mills Co., Plant 4, No. 1 spinning room.

He husband, Raymond W. Williams, died Dec. 21, 1982.

Survivors include sons R.W. Williams Jr., Scott Depot, W.Va., and Marvin D. Williams, Nokesville, Va.; brother H.A. White, Taylorsville; sister Nina Absher, Kannapolis; and five grandchildren.
