Ella Murray Caldwell

Ella Murray Caldwell, 55, 520 S. Clay St., died Tuesday (March 28, 2000) at Rowan Regional MedicalCenter.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

LaKenya Jamica Carpenter

NORWOOD — The funeral is today for LaKenya Jamica Carpenter, 26, 137 Wind Road, who died Saturday (March 25, 2000) at North Carolina Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill.

She had attended Stanly Tech Community College, Albemarle.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Barringer’s Chapel Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

At other times the family will be at the home of her mother, Karen C. Carpenter, 304 Dock St.

Mae Fair

YONKERS, N.Y. — Mae Fair, 80 Riverdale Ave., died Saturday (March 25, 2000) in Yonkers.

Her husband, J.C. “Sonny Boy” Fair Jr., a former Salisbury, N.C., resident, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sisters Avis Fair W. Monroe and Vietta Fair Roberts, both of Salisbury, N.C.

Services: Noon Thursday, Gramby’s Funeral Home Chapel, Bronx. Burial will be in the Bronx.

Visitation: 3-8 today at the funeral home.

 

Blanche Ham Grannaman

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Thursday for Blanche Marie Ham Grannaman, 88, Grannaman Drive, who died Monday (March 27, 2000) at her home.

Born Nov. 1, 1911, in Kewanee, Ill., Mrs. Grannaman was a daughter of the late Franklin L. and Laura E. Hamm Ham. A homemaker, she was a Baptist.

Her husband, Harry Grannaman, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son B.L. “Butch” Grannaman, Mocksville; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, Ijames Cross Roads Baptist Church cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Linda Lewis.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Davie Funeral Service.

Wilbert Edwin Hall

The funeral will be Thursday for Wilbert Edwin Hall, 67, Salisbury, who died Monday (March 27, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after six months of declining health.

Born April 1, 1932, in Rowan County, Mr. Hall was a son of the late Arnoldrus “Nollie”Washington and Mary Lovanda Kepley Hall. He was a graduate of Cleveland High School and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

A lifelong member of St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, he retired after 42 years from W.A. Brown and Co., where he was a supervisor in the painting department.

Survivors include wife Helen Smith Hall, whom he married March 10, 1956; son Eddie Hall, Salisbury; daughter Teresa Barnes, Salisbury; brother Reginal Hall, Salisbury; sister Annie Laura Thomas, Salisbury; and six grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, James C. Lyerly Chapel, Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Wendell Phillips, pastor, St. Matthew’s Episcopal, and the Rev. Donald Smith, Atlanta, Ga. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Otis Ricks Hodges

Otis Ricks Hodges, 86, 1307 Forestdale Drive, died Wednesday (March 29, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury.

Born May 9, 1913, in Garysburg, Mr. Hodges was a son of the late Raleigh Chatman and Gracie Wrenn Hodges. Educated in the Roanoke Rapids schools, he had served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He had retired as a brakeman from Southern Railway after 34 years and was a member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church.

His wife, Elizabeth Farmer Hodges, died Dec. 26, 1981.

Survivors include sisters Antoinette Lassiter and Catherine Williams, both of Gaston, Jane M. Lynch, Gasburg, Va., and Phyllis Yow, Newington, Va.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Neill Shaw, pastor, Milford Hills United Methodist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home of a nephew, Luke “Butch” Farmer Jr., 1327 Forestdale Drive.

Clifford Grady Lefler Jr.

ROCKWELL — Clifford Grady Lefler Jr., 71, 5510 Highway 152 E., died Monday (March 27, 2000) at GenesisElderCare of Salisbury.

Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, is in charge.

 

Myrtle Dorton McCorkle

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Thursday for Myrtle Dorton McCorkle, 79, 920 Miller Road, who died Monday (March 28, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.

Born Aug. 26, 1920, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. McCorkle was a daughter of the late E.A. and Sallie Cashion Dorton. A homemaker, she had been educated in the Rowan County schools. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury.

Her husband, Roy McCorkle, died March 31, 1999.

Survivors include sons Donnie McCorkle, China Grove, and Phil McCorkle, Spencer; one grandchild; and three step-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday,St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Gene Bruce. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Virginia Bass Stewart

MOORESVILLE — Virginia Bass Stewart, 82, North Maple Street, died Tuesday (March 28, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

BornJune 3, 1917, in Iredell County, Mrs. Stewart was a daughter of the late Mack and Grace Elder Bass. A 1934 graduate of Mooresville High School, she retired from Chempsun Yarns twisting department. She was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church.

Her husband, D. Fred Stewart, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Mrs. Dave (Kathy S.) Baldwin, Mooresville; son Bill Stewart, Mooresville; sister Kathryn B. Bumgardner, Mooresville; two grandsons; five step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Johnny C. Cozart. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Cavin Funeral Home.

Pauline Almond Stiller

BADIN — The funeral will be Friday for Pauline Almond Stiller, 80, formerly of 53 Willow St., who died Monday (March 27, 2000) at Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Center, Albemarle.

Born Aug. 7, 1919, in Stanly County, Mrs. Stiller was a daughter of the late Verdie and Stella Russell Almond. A member of First Presbyterian Church of Badin, she had retired from Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Center, Albemarle.

Her husband, L.A. Stiller, died in 1966.

Survivors include son L.A. “Sonny” Stiller Jr., Badin; daughters Edith S. Zacharda, Olympia, Wash., and Linda S. Burleson, Garden City, S.C.; brothers Coy Almond, Sunset Beach, and Horace Almond, Charlotte; sisters Hazel McLaurin, Lake Wylie, S.C., and Joyce Burris, Badin; eight grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Stanly Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Dan Wray and the Rev. Tony Biles. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at 42 Chestnut St.

Ethel Dockery Watkins

OAKBORO — The funeral will be Thursday for Ethel Mae Dockery Watkins, 74, 402 Hamilton Road, sister of Andrew “Bo” Dockery, Albemarle, who died Sunday (March 26, 2000) at Anson County Hospital, Wadesboro.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Saint Matthew United Church of God. Burial, East Side Cemetery, Albemarle.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the home of daughter Clara Hunter, HilltopStreet.
