Second-graders in Kim Easts class at North Rowan Elementary are learning more than
sign language on Wednesdays. Theyre learning to appreciate differences.Ive had several of them tell me they know
someone at church whos hearing impaired, and they show off the sign-language skills
theyve acquired, East said. It helps them learn diversity.
North Rowan High School students in Kelly
Lineberrys sign language class go to the elementary school each week to teach the
second-graders and reinforce what theyve already learned.
East said the second-graders have learned to sign
things like their names, colors and the names of animals, and have been so enthusiastic,
she may do it again next year.
