Sarah Hannah Allison

CONCORD — Funeral services were held Sunday for Sarah Hannah Allison, 84, formerly of 483 Harris St., N.W., who died Friday (March 24, 2000) at Transitional Health Services, Kannapolis.

Born May 9, 1915, in IredellCounty, Mrs. Allison was a daughter of the late William Robert and Effie Lee Howard Hannah. She had retired in 1977 from Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1, wash cloth department, after 32 years. She was a member of Poplar Tent PresbyterianChurch.

Her husband, William E. Allison, died in 1975.

Survivors include son James M. Allison, LaGrange, Ga.; daughter Myra H. Bradley, Kannapolis; sister Anne Mae Goodrum, Charlotte; and four grandchildren.

Services were held 2 p.m. Sunday at Poplar Tent Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Peter Hale officiated. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, was in charge.

James Haskell Barber

KANNAPOLIS — James Haskell “Big Boy” Barber, 89, formerly of Ross Avenue, died Sunday (March 26, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Oct. 6, 1910, in Caldwell County, Mr. Barber, a son of the late W.C. and Virginia Whisant Barber, retired from Cannon Mills sewing room.

A coin collector, he was a member and past president of Kannapolis Coin Club, a former Boy Scout leader and a member of First Baptist Church.

He also played Santa Claus at Carolina Mall and Montgomery Ward’s.

His wife, Wilma G. Barber, preceded him in death.

Survivors include sons James F., Buddy and Richard R. Barber, all of Kannapolis; brothers Willard, Odell and Junior Barber, all of Gaston County; sister Fern Sanders, Gaston County; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Tom Cabannis and the Rev. Norman Brisson. Burial, Near the Cross Freewill Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

 

Frank Dalton Lee

LEXINGTON — Frank Dalton Lee, 88, formerly of Fuller Street, died Saturday (March 25, 2000) at Autumn Care Nursing, Salisbury, after several years of illness.

Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home, Lexington, is in charge. The family will be at the home of a niece, Elizabeth Henderson Dixon, Fuller Street.

 

Jack Eugene Rainey

Jack Eugene Rainey, 85, Salisbury, died Sunday (March 26, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury after five months of declining health.

Born Aug. 25, 1914, in Rowan County, Mr. Rainey was a son of the late Michael William and Laura Gaskey Rainey. He was educated in the Rowan County schools. He retired Dec. 31, 1985, after 50 years from Cannon Mills plant 7. He had also been a farmer.

A member of Calvary Baptist Church and the Men’s Sunday school class, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.

A son, Tony Ray Rainey, died March 20, 1997.

Survivors include wife Dortha Trexler Rainey, whom he married Feb. 27, 1937; son Jack E. Rainey Jr., Salisbury; sister Lona R. Smith, Salisbury; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Rick Cockerham, pastor, Calvary Baptist Church, and the Rev. Bobby Seagroves. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home.

 

Reva Williams Thompson

CONCORD — Reva Williams Thompson, 77, 1501 Zion Church Road, died Sunday (March 26, 2000) at Eden Garden.

Born July 7, 1922, in Anson County, Mrs. Thompson was a daughter of the late Thomas Henry and Cora Mae Parker Williams.

She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where she had been a member of the choir, Judson-Gardner Ladies Circle and Joyful Workers Sunday school Class. Retired, she had owned the Deluxe Cafe.

Her husband, Chalmers Long Thompson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Janis T. Carpenter, Charlotte, and Phyllis T. McKenzie, Thomasville; son Jeff Thompson, Monroe; sisters Louise Morris, Mary Agnes Napier and Ona Mae Thomas, all of Albemarle; brother Billy Joe Williams, Albemarle; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m.Tuesday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Gary Pinion, the Rev. Eddie Barbee, the Rev. Mark Mabry and the Rev. Tommy Bright. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Joseph Jasper Waddell

SPENCER — Joseph Jasper Waddell, 89, 126 Eleventh St., died Monday (March 27, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Summersett Funeral Home,Salisbury, is in charge.

 

Nadine Compton Caldwell

MOORESVILLE — Nadine Compton Caldwell, 72, 158 Deerwood Lane, died Saturday (March 25, 2000) at her home.

Born April 4, 1927, in Iredell County, Mrs. Caldwell was a daughter of the late Phillip S. and Hattie Cashion Compton. She had retired from Davidson College after 23 years, where she had worked as a librarian. She had also worked for Mooresville Mills and Troutman Shirt Co. for a number of years.

Her husband, Billy Caldwell, died in 1995.

Survivors include son Lee Caldwell, Mooresville; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Southside Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Steve Gouge and the Rev. Hal Greene. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Neill Funeral Home.

Fronia Furr Kirk

OAKBORO — Fronia Furr Kirk, 88, 821 N. Main St., died Saturday (March 25, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born May 20, 1911, in Stanly County, Mrs. Kirk was a daughter of the late Charles Croson and Maude Hartsell Furr. A teacher, she taught at Ridgecrest Elementary School, in the Shelby schools and several other Stanly County Schools.

She was a member of Oakboro United Methodist Church, where she had served as organist for a number of years.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Eugene Laidlaw and Lewis Kirk.

Survivors include sisters Nelma Ammons, Denver, N.C., Hazel Cooper and Ruth Mullis, both of Albemarle, and Cornell Rogers, Oakboro.

Services: 2 today, Oakboro United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Leslee Wray. Burial, Oakboro Cemetery.

HartsellFuneral Home is in charge.
