died Friday (March 24, 2000)NorthEast Medical Center.
Born Sept. 6, 1922, in Rowan
County, Mr. Haynes was a son of the late Charles Daniel and Mary Powlas Haynes. He had
retired from the supply department at Cannon Mills, Plant 4, Kannapolis. A member of First
Wesleyan Church, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.
Survivors include wife Viola Mae
Williams Haynes; sons Jimmie Deryle Haynes, Virginia Beach, Va., and David Reid Haynes,
Florida; stepdaughter Linda Lee Brown,Keedysville, Md.; sister Ethel Haynes Hunt,
Lexington; and brothers Harry Lee and Guy Haynes, both of China Grove, Ralph Haynes,
Concord, Charlie Junior Haynes, Kannapolis, and Joseph Haynes, Lexington.
Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, First
Wesleyan Church, Kannapolis. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, with military graveside rites
conducted by DAV Chapter 27 of Concord.
Visitation: 6-8 tonight,

Dean McCurdy, 72, 2887 N. Cannon Blvd., died Thursday (March 23, 2000)at
NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Aug. 21, 1927, in Cabarrus
County, Mrs. McCurdy was a daughter of the late Lelia Mae St. Clair and John Wheeler
Walker. She spent 14 years as a keypunch operator with Central Motor Lines in Charlotte.
A graduate of J.W. Cannon High
Schools class of 1945, Mrs. McCurdy was a member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran
Church, the Mariam Winslow Chapter of the Eastern Star and VFW Ladies Auxiliary Post 8989.
Survivors include husband James
Wade McCurdy; daughter Vicki McCurdy Lumsden, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; son Randy Steven
McCurdy, Morganton; and a granddaughter.
Services: Sunday, 2:30 p.m.,
Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Doug Kearney and the Rev. Hoke
Ritchie. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove, with services provided by the
Eastern Star.

Morton Smith, 79, 632 N. Third St., died Friday (March 24, 2000)at Stanly Memorial
Hospital.
Born Jan. 25, 1921, in Stanly
County, Mrs. Smith was a daughter of the late Ila Carter and Marion O. Taylor. A
homemaker, she was a member of White Crest Baptist Church.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death
by her husbands, Coney H. Morton and Leland Smith, and a daughter, Helen M. Lowder.
Survivors include son Joe F.
Morton, Albemarle; brother Marion GusTaylor,Norwood; sisters Sarah Simpson,
Albemarle, and Mary Ellen Morgan, Wilmington; five grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.

(March 22, 2000)at her residence after two years of declining health.

Whitley, 88, 16343 Highway 24/27, died Thursday (March 23, 2000)at Stanly Memorial
Hospital, Albemarle.
Born May 5, 1911, in Stanly
County, Mr. Whitley was a son of the late Anceline McClure and Nathaniel Greene Whitley. A
graduate of Ridgecrest School, he had retired from Cannon Mills in Kannapolis, where he
was bleachery foreman.
Survivors include wife Velma
Barbee Whitley; son Rodney Whitley, Oakboro; daughters Lynette Whitley Whitley, Oakboro,
Nell Whitley Beam, Monroe, and Wanda Whitley Barbee, La Grange, Ga.; sisters Martha Tucker
and Sara McDaniel, both of Oakboro; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.
