Almost a month after Animal Control officers confirmed the first case of rabies in Rowan
County for 2000, a second case is in the books.On March 22, a rabid raccoon attacked two dogs at a home on
Panhandle Road. The homeowner shot the raccoon and called Animal Control to pick it up.
A state laboratory confirmed
Thursday that the aggressive raccoon was rabid.
The two dogs were vaccinated for
rabies, so they only needed booster shots and don’t face any type of quarantine.
State law requires that animals 4
months or older be vaccinated for rabies.
On Feb. 29, Animal Control
officials confirmed that a rabid raccoon was caught on Sharon Court in the Corbin Hills
neighborhood.
On April 15, local veterinarians,
working with Animal Control, will offer discounted rabies shots to the public. Seven
veterinarian offices will offer the vaccination at $7 a shot, rather than the normal $15
to $17, from 9 a.m. to noon that Saturday.
