Out-of-town agents search near apartments for body

BY BRAD A. HODGES & JENNIFER MOXLEY
SALISBURY POST

Salisbury, Fayetteville and Virginia Beach detectives assisted U.S. Secret Service agents Thursday as they searched for a girl’s body in a small patch of woods in west Salisbury.

Armed with three police dogs trained to recover human remains, officers looked for almost three hours in four to five acres behind Colonial Village Apartments off D Avenue. They found nothing.

A year ago, Virginia Beach police and Secret Service agents worked on a case, and the suspects arrested had ties to Salisbury, Salisbury Police Capt.Mark Wilhelm said.

The agencies found information about a possible killing that occurred in Salisbury between December 1998 and February 1999, Wilhelm said.

“Based on that information, they felt obligated to check the area,” Wilhelm said.

The Fayetteville department provided the three trained dogs.

The officers concentrated on an area directly behind the same building in the 100-acre apartment complex where resident George Johnson Jr. killed girlfriend Keshia Williams in 1997. Williams was three months pregnant when Johnson — who was later convicted of second-degree murder — killed her and dumped her body in the Yadkin River.

Wilhelm said the two incidents are not related.

Patti L. Klicka, who manages the apartments and lives in the complex, said the federal agents interviewed her but would not say who they were searching for.

Klicka said she believes the victim was a girl Klicka had seen visiting men overnight at one of the apartments.

“I was trying to find out what was going on,” she said. “I can’t find why the Secret Service is involved. They just asked me if I remembered her.”
