Azalee Caulder Ammons

KANNAPOLIS — Azalee Caulder Ammons, 87, 1302 Hawthorne St., died Wednesday (March 22, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 15, 1912, in Marion County, S.C., Mrs. Ammons was a daughter of the late David and Nitty Barantine Caulder. Retired since 1952 due to disability, she had been employed at Cannon Mills, Plants 1 and 4. She was a charter member of Oak Grove Freewill Baptist Church, where she had taught Sunday school.

Her husband, Boyd Ammons, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Elnita A. Robinson, Kannapolis, and Mrs.Ted (Peggy) Bowlin, China Grove; son Davis Ammons, Kannapolis; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Broome, the Rev. Buddy Boone and the Rev. James Master. Burial,Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Noel Peck Davis

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Friday for Noel Peck Davis, 37, Rockwell, who died Tuesday (March 21, 2000) at his home.

Born Dec. 2, 1962, in Huntingdon, Pa., Mr.. Davis was a son of Harry P. and Shirley L. Davis, Huntingdon. Educated in the Huntingdon schools, he was a self-employed floor covering installer.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Susan Weir Davis, whom he married April 12, 1986; son Kyle P. Davis, of the home; daughter Kourtney Davis, of the home; brothers John and Chris Davis, both of Huntingdon, Pa., and Mitchell Davis, Indianapolis, Ind.; and sister Leah St. Blanchard, Huntingdon, Pa.

Services: 6 p.m. Friday, Day Spring Church, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Garry Steedly.

Visitation: None.

Evergreen Cremation Services is in charge.

Lala Marie Hale

LEXINGTON — Infant Lala Marie Hale died Tuesday (March 21, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem. She was the daughter of Christine Hale and Michael Fennell, 496 W. Third Ave.

She was born March 15, 2000, in Forsyth County.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include maternal grandparents Freddy and Deborah Hale, Lexington; maternal great-grandparents Jack and Ruth Hale, Linwood, and Marvin and Lala Hinshaw, Lexington; paternal grandparents William R. and Sarah Rentz, Lexington; and paternal great-grandmother Louise Rentz, Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Timberlake Chapel, Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Wayne Sechrest. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at 8960 Old Salisbury Road, Linwood.

 

Virginia C. Huneycutt

ALBEMARLE — Virginia Connell Huneycutt, 73, 33426 Old Salisbury Road, died Wednesday (March 22, 2000) at Britthaven of Piedmont Nursing Center.

Born Feb. 21, 1927, in Stanly County, Mrs. Huneycutt was a daughter of the late Carol and Lucy Kinley Connell. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.

Her husband, Connis S. Huneycutt, died in 1982. She was also preceded in death by sons Steven and Allen Huneycutt and daughters Jane Mason and Judy Marie Huneycutt.

Survivors include son JerryHuneycutt, Albemarle; daughters Jean Frick, Norwood, and Betty Melton and Patty Kendall, both of Albemarle; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Stanly Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Gary Baker. Burial, Red Cross Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Betty Melton, 1320 Lowder St.

 

Betty Jo Foster Lakey

MOCKSVILLE — Betty Jo Foster Lakey, 62, Madison Road, died Wednesday (March 22, 2000) at Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Winston-Salem.

Born Oct. 1, 1937, in Davie County, Mrs. Lakey was a daughter of the late Joe and Eva McClamrock Foster. A 1956 graduate of Mocksville High School, she was a homemaker.

She was a member of Hardison United Methodist Church, where she was pianist for the Children’s Choir. She also played piano in a senior citizens rhythm band.

Survivors include husband C. Clyde Lakey; daughters Auburn L. Bailey, Mocksville, Margaret L. Sims, Cornelius, Brenda L. Epperson, Mount Airy, and Becky L. Jones, Rural Hall; brothers Mack and Tex Foster, both of Mocksville; sister Lou Phillips, Mocksville; and six grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dennis Marshall and the Rev. Jasper Boyd. Burial, Hardison United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Danny Lavoy Lee

KANNAPOLIS — Danny Lavoy Lee, 41, formerly of Kannapolis, died Tuesday (March 21, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Aug. 12, 1958, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Lee was a son of the late Charles L. Lee and Shirley Wingler. He was an electrician prior to becoming disabled five years ago.

Survivors include son Bryan Charles Lee, China Grove; grandmother Gladys Lee, Kannapolis; sisters Karyn Waterfield, Suffolk, Va., Raylene Pollard, Danielle Perez and Charlene Bowman, all of Virginia Beach, Va., and GwenLee Campbell, Albemarle; brothers Steve Wingler, Kannapolis, and George and Grag Kowal, both of Virginia Beach,Va.; stepfather Larry Wingler, Holden Beach; and stepmother Dolores Lee, Virginia Beach, Va.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, Kannapolis Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Roger Lee. The body will be cremated.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home of sister Gwen Campbell, 610 Austin St., Albemarle.

Matissue Lilly

ALBEMARLE — Matissue Lilly, 26, 125 S. Fifth St., died Wednesday (March 22, 2000) at Avante of Concord Nursing Center, Concord.

Born June 22, 1973, in Montgomery County, Ms. Lilly was a daughter of Marie Lilly Clark, Albemarle, and the late Theodore Roosevelt Lilly. Educated in the Albemarle schools, she was a certified nursing assistant.

She was a former employee of McDonald’s in Albemarle. She attended Union Chapel AME Church and Saints Delight Church.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include sons Andrico and Shyhem Lilly, both of the home; stepfather Johnathan D. Clark, Albemarle; maternal grandparents Otis and Mae Jewel Freeman Brooks, Albemarle; paternal grandmother Rhodema Lilly, Mount Gilead; brother Theodore Glenn Brooks, Albemarle; and sister Latisha Thompson, Albemarle.

Services: 3 p.m. Saturday, Greater Mount Zion Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. James T. Worthy. Burial, Mount Zion Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Dr. Max Pritchard Rogers

Funeral services were held this morning for Dr. Max Pritchard Rogers, 82, 102 Covenant Woods Drive, who died Monday (March 20, 2000) at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Born Aug. 17, 1917, in Burlington, Dr. Rogers was the son of the late John Jerome and Myrtle Holt Rogers. He graduated in 1942 from Duke University Medical Center, where he was one of the top six students. He completed a year of residency in surgery at Duke University Hospital before joining the U.S. Naval Reserve Medical Corps.

He was immediately deployed with the U.S. Marine Corps and spent two years on the front lines in the Pacific. He completed his residency in surgery at Duke after his discharge.

Dr. Rogers began his medical practice in High Point. Appointed chief surgeon for Southern Railway in 1966, he moved to Washington, D.C., where he spent the next 17 years.

He then became chief medical director of the National Hospital for Rehabilitation Services in Arlington,Va. After retiring in 1986, he moved to New Bern, where he was active with the New Bern Historical and Preservation Society, the Craven County Arts Council and First Presbyterian Church.

He also served on the board of directors for the N.C. Museum of Art. For 40 years, he was associated with Camp Sea Gull and Camp Seafarer, which were run by the Raleigh YMCA. He recently compiled “Ahoy There,” a collection of memoirs celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Neuse River Seafaring camps.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Salisbury.

A daughter, Elizabeth Leonard Rogers Davidson, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Nancy Leonard Rogers, whom he married in 1946; son Holt Leonard Rogers, Toccoa, Ga.; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.

Memorial services were held at 11 this morning at First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Thomas L. Griffis, senior pastor, and the Rev. Judith L. White, associate pastor, officiated. Burial was at Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

The family is receiving friends at the home.

Summersett Funeral Home was in charge.

Cameron Malik Shankle

ALBEMARLE — Cameron Malik Shankle, infant son of Aretha Shankle, 424 Griggs St., died Sunday (March 19, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

The infant was born Feb. 8, 2000, in Stanly County.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include maternal grandparents Mary Bennett Shankle, Albemarle, and Lewis and Pamela Shankle, Norwood; paternal grandparents Shirley and Shankle Crump Jr., Albemarle; and sisters Akii Crump and Anajah Shankle, both of Albemarle.

Services: 2 today, Kelsey Funeral Home Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by Lewis Shankle. Burial, East Macedonia Baptist Church, Porters community, Norwood.

Visitation: None.

 

Robert ‘Pete’ Stockton

The funeral will be Saturday for Robert “Pete” Stockton, 86, 7010 Mooresville Road, who died Saturday (March 18, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare after a period of declining health.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, Sills Creek AMEZion Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael McCray. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Friday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home.

 

Betty Tabor Stringer

CLEVELAND — Betty Tabor Stringer, 68, 4550 Foster Road, died Wednesday (March 22, 2000) at her home after two years of declining health.

Born Sept. 14, 1931, in Iredell County, Mrs. Stringer was a daughter of the late Charlie Hosea and Alice Young Tabor. She was educated in the Iredell County schools and at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, where she received a certified nursing certificate.

A retired nursing assistant, she was a member of Rock Hill Church of Christ and its Ladies Bible Class. She was a former member of the Rowan County Home Demonstration Club.

Survivors include husband Calvin Stringer; sons George A. Stringer, Detroit, Mich., and Eric T. Stringer, Greensboro; daughters Mrs. Edward (Calvetta) Peterson, Nashville,Tenn., Mrs. Frank (Betty) Cowan, Raleigh, and Mrs. Larry (Doris)Houpe and Debbie Young, both of Cleveland; brothers Willie J. Tabor, Salisbury, Edward A. and Andrew E. Tabor, both of Cleveland, and Dewayne Tabor, Statesville; sister Mrs. James (Louise)Tabor, Mocksville; 16 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

John Leo Thomas

John Leo Thomas, 80, Salisbury, died Thursday (March 23, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Beulah C. Bowen

LEXINGTON — Beulah Mae Coppley Clark Bowen, 96, Spencer Health Care, Spencer, formerly of Mount Moriah Drive, died Monday (March 20, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Jan. 1, 1904, in Rowan County, Mrs. Bowen was a daughter of the late Edward Preston and Minnie Lee Smith Coppley. She was a member of North Lexington Baptist Church, where she served with the Outreach Ministries and was a former Sunday school teacher. She was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Her first husband, William Clark, died in 1934, and her second husband, Joe Bowen, died in 1984.

Survivors include sisters Libby Coppley, Lexington, Vallie Agner, Salisbury, Edna Waller, Milford, Va., and Helen Fisher, Spring Hill, Fla., and brother Ottis Coppley, Lexington.

Services: 1 p.m. today, Timberlake Chapel at Piedmont Funeral Home, conducted by Dr. Robert Floyd and the Rev. Robert Heard. Burial, Oakdale Baptist Church.

William C. Readling Jr.

William Clinton Readling Jr., 73, 801 Sunset Drive, died Wednesday (March 22, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two weeks of serious illness.

Born Jan. 13, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Readling was a son of the late Mabel Watson and William Clinton Readling. Educated in the China Grove schools, he had been employed at Rowan Cotton Mill and Cannon Mills before his retirement in 1987. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he attended Landmark Church.

Survivors include wife Elizabeth Hall Readling; sons Tony and Gary Readling, both of Salisbury; sister Betty R. Beaumont, Las Vegas; and four grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Landmark Church, conducted by the Rev. Jerry Snipes, associate minister. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, with military honors by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Friday, Summersett Funeral Home.

KANNAPOLIS — Lois Merriman Stallings, 73, 1007 Pine St., died Thursday (March 23, 2000) at her home.
