Gleason Cromer Barringer

ALBEMARLE — Gleason Cromer Barringer, 85, 734 Mockingbird Road, died Monday (March 20, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Sept. 12, 1914, in Stanly County, Mr. Barringer was a son of the late Mattie Huneycutt Barringer. He retired from Wiscassett Mill Co. and was a member of Albemarle Seventh-day Adventist Church.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he served during World War II with “Tom Wolfe’s Battalion.” He was a life member of the VFWand DAV.

Survivors include wife of 58 years Tharon Talbert Barringer; son James Gleason “Butch” Barringer, Albemarle; brother Alton Ray Barringer, Albemarle; sisters Cora Lee Tucker and Ora Mae Hatley, both of Albemarle; and three grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Stanly Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Walton and the Rev. Dolan Talbert. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park. Full military rites by Stanly County DAV Ritual Team.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home.

George Watkins Boyd

George Watkins Boyd, 73, Charlotte, a former Salisbury resident, died Sunday (March 19, 2000).

Born in Oxford, Mr. Boyd was the son of the late Fred and Hettie Boyd. For most of his working life, he worked in the retail clothing business. While a Salisbury resident, he was the manager of Belks. He had also worked with Fox’s Department Store, Oxford, Collins Co., Charlotte, and Townhouse Department Store, Guam.

During World War II, Mr. Boyd served in the Pacific Theater with the U.S. Navy. He was a longtime member and deacon at Thomasboro Baptist Church and a charter member of Westchester Optimist Club. He was also a member of West Gate Masonic Lodge 738, a Shriner and member of Scottish Rite Bodies.

Survivors include wife of 53 years Anne Adcock Boyd; sons George W. Boyd Jr., Wilson, Warren C. Boyd, Charlotte, and Marshall Boyd, Boston, Mass.; brother F.C. Boyd, Oxford; three grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Thomasboro Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dennis J. Conner.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, McEwen Funeral Service, Charlotte Chapel, East Morehead Street.

Margaret Cagle

KANNAPOLIS — Margaret Sides Cagle, 78, 1003 Michigan Ave., died Monday (March 20, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Randall Hanes Childress

LINWOOD — No funeral services are planned for Randall Hanes Childress, 53, 592 Hill Top Drive, who died Saturday (March 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Born April 23, 1946, in Rowan County, Mr. Childress was the son of the late Alley and Margaret Campbell Childress. He was educated in the Rowan County schools. A cook for 29 years, he had been employed at Wink’s Bar-B-Q and City View Restaurant. He was a Baptist.

Survivors include son Tony Hanes Childress, Faith; and brothers Kenneth Childress, Salisbury, and Arthur Childress, Faith.

Services: None. The body is to be cremated.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the home of Kenneth Childress, 995 Parks Road.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Marion Cox Hubbard

MarionCox Hubbard, 73, 704 Colby Circle, died Monday (March 20, 2000) at his home after a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 6, 1926, in Hodgenville, Ky., Mr. Hubbard was the son of the late Marion Francis and Nell Cox Hubbard. He was educated in the Hodgenville, Ky., schools, and Transylvania University,Lexington, Ky.

A veteran, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He had worked as personnel director for North Carolina Memorial Hospital, Chapel Hill, for nine years. He had also worked for the State of Kentucky and the Federal Government and served as executive assistant to four Kentucky governors prior to his retirement. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and a participant in the Senior Games.

Survivors include wife Betty Slaughter Hubbard; daughters Joyce Davis,Salisbury, Judy Kidwell, Carmel, Ind., and Beth Conway,Louisville, Ky.; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 3 p.m. Wednesday, Grace United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Powell. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: None. The family will be at the home on Colby Circle.

Betty Bolin Rhyne

The funeral will be Wednesday for Betty Bolin Rhyne, 78, Salisbury, who died Sunday (March 19, 2000) at her home after a period of declining health.

Born May 5, 1921, in Sikeston, Mo., Mrs. Rhyne was a daughter of the late Walter and Addie Hawthrone Bolin. She was educated in the Sikeston, Mo., schools. A homemaker, she was a member of Salisbury First Church of the Nazarene.

Her husband, Allen Rhyne, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughter Marie Trantham, Raleigh; sisters Edna Barnette, Kokomo, Ind., Irene Yost, Kannapolis, Mary Wilson, Kalamazoo, Mich., and Edna Porter, Benton Harbor, Mich.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert F. Turner. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Irene Yost, 615 Irene St., Kannapolis.

Dr. Max Pritchard Rogers

Dr. Max Pritchard Rogers, 82, 102 Covenant Woods Drive, died Monday (March 20, 2000) at Salisbury Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Carl Hinkle Rudisill

ROCKWELL — The funeral will be Wednesday for Carl Hinkle Rudisill, 86, Rockwell, who died Sunday (March 19, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after several years of declining health.

Born Oct. 2, 1913, in Catawba County, Mr. Rudisill, a son of the late Craig and Delia Brittan Rudisill, was a graduate of Banoak High School. A 1936 graduate of Appalachian State University, he was inducted into the university’s hall of fame in 1984.

He had taught at Banoak School and Rockwell School and coached boy’s and girl’s basketball at both schools. He retired in 1976 from East Rowan High School, where he had coached boy’s basketball. He was a member of Grace Bible Church.

His wife, Grace Davis Rudisill, died Sept. 6, 1991.

Survivors include sons Carl R. “Dick” Rudisill, Gold Hill, and Michael D. Rudisill, Lake Odessa, Mich.; sister Edith Whisnant, Vale, N.C.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Grace Bible Church, conducted by the Rev. Allen Misenheimer. Burial, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sardis Lutheran Church cemetery, Vale,N.C.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of Carl R. “Dick” Rudisill, Gold Hill.

Clester Wayne Hatley

ALBEMARLE — Clester Wayne Hatley, 58, 151 Anderson Road, died Sunday (March 19, 2000) at Mercy Hospital, Charlotte.

Born Dec. 8, 1941, in Stanly County, Mr. Hatley was the son of Clester Lee and Nellie Pearl Blake Hatley. Self-employed, he had been a carpet and floor covering subcontractor. He was a member of St. Stephens Wesleyan Church.

Survivors include sons Larry Wayne and Brian Allen Hatley, both of Stanfield, and Tim Coley, Albemarle; daughters Liz Coley Wensil, Albemarle, Tina Coley Slater, Winston-Salem, and Becky Coley, Rockwell; brother John Terry Hatley, Stanfield; sisters Donnie “Clessie” Crenshaw, New London, Edith Deal, Concord, Elaine Gordon, Richfield, Trulie Corn, Kannapolis, Jeanie Harkey, Midland, and Vickie Smith, Stanfield; companion Marie Coley, Albemarle; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Berea Baptist Church, Stanfield, conducted by the Rev. Keith M. Austin. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, HartsellFuneral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on AndersonRoad.
