Eddie Lee Hinson, 47, of 304 Second Ave., died Sunday (March 19, 2000).
Born Dec. 4, 1952, in Orange County, he was a son
of Bertha Lee Stegall Harrison of Albemarle and the late Clay Dean Deese. He was employed
as a painter and carpenter.
A daughter, Anita Sells, preceded him in death.
Survivors in addition to his mother include
daughter Angela Sells Lee, Albemarle; sisters Marilyn Lowder and Jean Riopelle, both of
Albemarle; brothers Roger Dean Hinson, Joel L. Lucas, John Wayne Lucas and Larry Dean
Lucas, all of Albemarle; fiance Mary Burgess, Albemarle; and one grandchild.

Delmer E. Carlan
SPENCER Delmer E. Carlan, formerly of
Spencer, died Wednesday (March 15, 2000) in Jacksonville, Fla., after a long illness.
Survivors include children Stan Carlan, Sebring,
Fla., Steve Carlan, Memphis, Tenn., Darlene Geiser, Ocala, Fla., and Sam Carlan, and
Sharon Brown, both of Collierville, Tenn.; siblings Jewel Ward, Linwood, G.C. Carlan,
Salisbury, Inez Reimann, Duluth, Ga., and Joan Puckett, Chattanooga, Tenn.; and 10
grandchildren.
A memorial service was to be held this morning at
Wingate Baptist Church, Jacksonville, Fla.
Inez Vivian Dixon Cassell
The funeral will be Wednesday for Inez Vivian
Dixon Cassell, 64, 1335 Bringle Ferry Road, who died Thursday (March 16, 2000) at Rowan
Regional Medical Center after a year of declining health.
Born June 6, 1935 in Salisbury, Mrs. Cassell was a
daughter of the late Crowder and Flossie Clodfelter Dixon. She had attended Dunbar High
School, East Spencer. A retired private duty nursing assistant, she was a member of Mount
Olive FullGospel Baptist Church, the choir, youth choir and missionary department.
Survivors include husband Samuel Alexander
Cassell; sons Samuel Hayes Cassell, Greensboro, and Barry D. and Bryant Dixon Cassell,
both of Salisbury; daughters Rebecca J. Cassell of the home, Jacqueline E. Cassell and
Andrea D. Cassell, both of Salisbury; brother Wilford N. Baby Dixon,
Salisbury; sisters Hazel D. Faggart and Joan D. Goodlett, both of Salisbury; 12
grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Alberta Seats Cope
MOCKSVILLE Alberta Seats Cope, 84, Spillman
Road, died Sunday (March 19, 2000) at Meadowbrook Terrace, Clemmons.
Born July 6, 1915, in Davie County, Mrs. Cope was
a daughter of the late Phillip Thomas and Amanda West Seats. She was a homemaker. A member
of Green Meadows Baptist Church, she was in the church choir. She had previously been a
member of Macedonia Moravian Church.
A well known Davie County artist, she was an
accomplished pianist and organist.
Her first husband, John Anderson Beauchamp, died
in 1943.
Survivors include second husband Ernest Jacob
Cope; son Phillip Beauchamp, Advance; brother Charles E. Seats, Advance; seven
grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Yadkin Valley Baptist
Church, conducted by the Rev. Ronnie Craddock. The body will be placed in the church at

SPENCER Brenda Vander Vliet Myers, 52, 209
Eighth St., died Saturday (March 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Oct. 31, 1947, in Fort Monroe, Va., Mrs.
Myers was a daughter of Dorothy Ganelda Holt Vander Vliet of Spencer, and the late Capt.
Anthony Van Vander Vliet. She was a graduate of Annapolis High School,
Annapolis, Md., and a 1991 graduate of the registered nursing program at Rowan Cabarrus
Community College.
A homemaker, she had worked as a nursing assistant
inIndiana. After returning to Spencer she had worked as a sewing machine operator at
Century Place and later as a nursing assistant at Rowan Regional Medical Center,
Salisbury. After graduating from the nursing program, she worked as a registered nurse at
Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, and Rowan Regional Medical
Center, Salisbury.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include sons
Anthony Duane Myers, Sanford, Kevin Lee Myers, Gold Hill, and Ryan Paul Myers,
Bloomingdale, Ind.; brother Charles R. Vander Vliet, Washington, W.Va.; sister Donna E.
Allen, Spencer; and four grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS Edna Laura Nichols, 86, 1422 W.
A St., died Saturday (March 18, 2000) after three years of declining health and a week of
serious illness.
Born April 28, 1913, in West Planes, Mo., Mrs.
Nichols was a daughter of the late George R. and Sophrona Worstell Kirkman. Educated in
the Rowan County schools, she had retired in 1977 from China Grove Cotton Mills.
She had been a member of First Baptist Church,
China Grove, where she was a member of the Sunday school and the OASISClub of the church.
She had also been a member of Meals on Wheels.
Her husband, David Nichols, died in 1996.
Survivors include son Lee Nichols, Kannapolis;
daughters Judy King, Elon College, and Helen London, Landis; sisters Elsie Kirkman,
Landis, and Frances Wiley, Kannapolis; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one
great-great-grandchild.

KANNAPOLIS Arthurine Winecoff Simpson, 81,
formerly of 1015 Sprucewood St., died Sunday (March 19, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center,
Concord, after a brief illness.
Born Feb. 14, 1919, in Cabarrus County, Mrs.
Simpson was a daughter of the late Arthur William and Mertie Ann Elizabeth Winecoff. She
retired in 1981 from Cannon Mills Plant 1, data processing department after 28 years. A
member of Trinity United Methodist Church, she was active with the Ruth Kale Sunday school
class.
Her husband, Robert T. Bob Simpson,
died Jan. 13, 1995.
Survivors include son Robert T. Simpson Jr.,
Cumming, Ga.; daughter Anita S. Galliher, ChapelHill; brother Joe W. Winecoff, Concord;
sister Ruth Wilkinson, Concord; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS - Charles Ray Spry, 72, formerly of 707
Fairview St, died Saturday (March 18, 2000) at Concord Nursing Center following several
years of serious illness.
Born Nov. 15, 1927, in Kannapolis, he was a son of
the late Arthur Wade and Nethe Johnson Spry. He was retired from Cannon Mills Company,
Plant 4.
Survivors include sister Betty Jean Shuping,
Kannapolis; one niece and several nephews.
