Thomas Nathaniel Abel

Thomas Nathaniel Abel, 57, 105 Harrell Court, died Friday (March 17, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

‘Bosco’ Alexander

MOORESVILLE — Stephen Allen “Bosco” Alexander, 55, Shepherd Road, died Thursday (March 16, 2000).

Born July 2, 1944, in Iredell County, Mr. Alexander was a son of Betty Carrigan and Frank D. Alexander, Mooresville. A 1962 graduate of Mooresville High School, he had retired as a certified electrician for KoSa of Salisbury after 33 years with the company. He was employed by Bowles Automotive at the time of his death.

Mr. Alexander was a member of Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church, Troutman. He had been a volunteer with Shepherd’s Fire Department for 30 years and had served as chief for the past 12 years. He was a certified fire instructor.

He was a former member of the N.C. National Guard and the Mooresville Jaycees. He had formerly coached in the Mooresville Midget Football League.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Linda Overcash Alexander; daughter Krista Alexander, Mooresville; sisters Beth Segui, St. Augustine, Fla., and Cynthia Randleman, Lincolnton; and maternal grandmother Elizabeth L. Carrigan, Mooresville.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Mooresville Citizens Center, conducted by the Rev. Steve Porter, the Rev. Joanne Hull and the Rev. Wesley Morris. Burial, Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery, Troutman.

Charles Theron Canup

KANNAPOLIS — Charles Theron Canup, 71, formerly of North Juniper Street, died Friday (March 17, 2000) at Big Elm Nursing Center.

Born Jan. 31, 1929, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Canup was a son of the late Carrie Helms and Daniel Canup. Retired from Linn Corriher Mills, Landis, he was a member of First Evangelical Methodist Church.

Survivors include sons Ricky Canup, Mount Ulla, Jeff Canup, Kannapolis, and Tony, Donnie and Darrell Canup, all of Mooresville; daughters Valerie Williams and Kathy Chester, both of Mooresville; sisters Pearl Lambert, Morganton, Ruby Wright, Hickory, Millie Honeycutt, Rockwell and Pauline Griffin, Kannapolis; 11 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Brian Hammond. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Billy Ray Culp

ALBEMARLE — Billy Ray Culp, 61, 33420 Old Salisbury Road, died Thursday (March 16, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Jan. 21, 1939, in Stanly County, Mr. Culp was a son of the late Doris Kirk and Raymond Furchase Culp. He was employed by Alcoa. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was a member of Stony Hill United Methodist Church.

A son, David Edward Culp, died in 1988.

Survivors include son Eric “Skyler” Culp, Albemarle; daughter Wendy Culp Hinson, Albemarle; and sister Kathleen Culp Almond, Mount Gilead.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Jim Faggart. Burial, Stony Hill United Methodist Church cemetery.

Alice Snider Daemke

LEXINGTON — Alice Snider Daemke, 88, Brookstone Retirement Center, died Friday (March 17, 2000) at Meadowbrook Manor of Clemmons.

Born June 14, 1911, in Davidson County, she was a daughter of the late Della Wood and Zeb Snider. A homemaker, she was a member of Madison Heights Freewill Baptist Church.

Mrs. Daemke was preceded in death by her husband, Paul Daemke, and sons Talmadge Murray, Larry Dean Murray and Willie Murray.

Survivors include sons Allen R. and Leon Max Michael, both of Lexington, and Roger Dale Murray, Norfolk, Va.; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Madison Heights Freewill Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. David Robinson. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Allen Michael, 297 E.L. Myers Road.

Dena Earnhardt

KANNAPOLIS — Dena Russell Earnhardt, 38, 201 Winona Ave., died Thursday (March 16, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born May 3, 1961, in Montgomery County, Md., Mrs. Earnhardt was a daughter of Sally Carrouth and Wayne Russell, Kannapolis. Employed with Phillip Morris, she was a member of Bethpage Presbyterian Church.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include daughter Erica Earnhardt, of the home; fiancee David Faw, Faith; sisters Becky Farmer, Kannapolis, and Debbie Atwell, Moravian Falls; brothers Rick Russell, Bobby Horton and Jack Horton, all of Kannapolis; and paternal grandparents Lewis and Helen Russell, Kannapolis.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Steve Mowery and the Rev. Keith Grogg. Burial, Bethpage Presbyterian Church cemetery.

Helena Frick Eidson

FAITH — Helena Frick Eidson, 77, Faith, died Thursday (March 16, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born March 20, 1922, in Rowan County, Mrs. Eidson was a daughter of the late Myrtle Rhinhardt and John Wesley Frick. She was educated in the Rowan County schools. A homemaker, she also baked cakes for the public for more than 30 years.

Mrs. Eidson was a member of Faith Lutheran Church and the Faith Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

Her husband, Coy E. Eidson, died Dec. 8, 1984.

Survivors include daughters Judy Russell and Marlene Dunn, both of Salisbury; brothers Robert “Brynn” Frick, Faith, and Benny Frick, Georgia; sister Sadie Lea, Durham; four grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 10 a.m. Monday, National Cemetery, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Keith Copeland, pastor, Faith Lutheran Church.

Visitation: 4-6 p.m. today, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Melvin Alexander Hughes

ALBEMARLE — Melvin Alexander Hughes, 64, 20668 Huneycutt Mill Road, died Friday (March 17, 2000) at his residence.

Born Dec. 18, 1935, in Aynor, S.C., Mr. Hughes was a son of the late Lillie Jane Livingston and Furman Marion Hughes. He had retired as a machine shop mechanic with Collins & Aikman. He was a member of Union Grove Baptist Church, where he was a deacon and a Sunday school teacher.

Survivors include wife Joyce Ann Thompson Hughes; son Rodney A. Hughes, Rocky Mount; daughter Kathy A. Hughes, Albemarle; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Union Grove Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Lee Church and the Rev. Jerry Mabry. Burial, church cemetery.

Betty Brewer Mullis

KANNAPOLIS — Betty Brewer Miller, 67, 1100 Thomas Ave., died Thursday (March 16, 2000) at her home after seven months of declining health and one week of serious illness.

Born Dec. 25, 1932, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Mullis was a daughter of the late Nora Mae Nash and F.B. Brewer. A graduate of Cannon High School, she also attended Kings Business College in Charlotte.

She had retired from Fieldcrest-Cannon, Plant 1, data processing department, after 36 years with the company. She was a member of Midway United Methodist Church.

Survivors include husband Clyde E. Mullis; son Jeff Mullis, Kannapolis; daughter Cindy Berryman, Kannapolis; two granddaughters; and one great-grandson.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Midway United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Billy Rintz. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Catherine Blalock Shoaf

Catherine Louise Blalock Shoaf, 74, Salisbury, died Thursday (March 16, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Born July 2, 1925, in Rowan County, Mrs. Shoaf was a daughter of the late Eva Mae Loflin and Joseph Franklin Blalock. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she also attended nursing school.

She had retired as a seamstress with garment manufacturers in Salisbury. Mrs. Shoaf was a member of Christ Lutheran Church, East Spencer, and Rufty-Holmes Senior Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter Council Shoaf.

Survivors include sons Walter Kenneth Shoaf, Salisbury, and Dr. James Marion Shoaf, Durham; sister Eyelyn Mae Blalock Hardy, Augusta, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

Services: 1:30 p.m. Monday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. Lyerly Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Norris, pastor of Union Lutheran Church. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery.

Ecta Rogers Simmons

ALBEMARLE — Ecta Myrtle Rogers Simmons, 93, 37221 Barnhardt Road, died Thursday (March 16, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 19, 1906, in Greensboro, Mrs. Simmons was the daughter of the late Viola and Thomas Franklin Rogers. Retired as a roller shop worker with American & Efird Mills, she was a member of West Albemarle Baptist Church.

Mrs. Simmons was preceded in death by her husband, Nixon Luther “Nick” Simmons.

Survivors include sons Alton Rogers Simmons, Albemarle, and Jimmy Mitchell Simmons, Salt Lake City, Utah; sister Jettie Whitley, Albemarle; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Palestine United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Caroll Flack. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home of son Alton Rogers Simmons, 40199 Airport Road.

 

C.M. Troutman

KANNAPOLIS — Charlie M. Troutman, 75, 617 N. Poplar Ave., died Thursday (March 16, 2000) at the Best of Care Rest Home after a year of declining health and six months of serious illness.

Born June 30, 1924, in Lexington, Mr. Troutman was a son of the late Lizzie Hoffner and John Adam Troutman. He had retired from the No. 7 spinning room of Cannon Mills. He was a member of Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Mr. Troutman was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Alice Smith Troutman.

Survivors include sons Daniel L. Troutman, Apex, Keith E. Troutman, Charlotte, and Phillip S. and John P. Troutman, both of Kannapolis; and five grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Kimball Memorial Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Doug Kearney and the Rev. Hoke Ritchie. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, with military rites conducted by the DAV of Concord.

Jasper Pruet Turner

OAKBORO — Jasper Pruet Turner, 57, 1618 McLester Road, died Friday (March 17, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Born June 6, 1942, in Stanly County, Mr. Turner was a son of the late Bertha Ellen Ingold and Charlie Travis Turner. He was employed as a roofer with Kimrey Heating and Air conditioning.

Mr. Turner was preceded in death by his first wife, Juanita Turner.

Survivors include wife Novella Huneycutt Turner, Oakboro; sisters Judy Cook, Concord, and Lula Mae Turner, Gladys Rummage and Hattie Holt, all of Albemarle.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, Albemarle. Burial, Union Grove Baptist Church cemetery, Albemarle.
