Peggy B. CrossLEXINGTON
Peggy Jean Benfield Cross, 47, 614 Wall St., died Friday (March 10, 2000)at Wake
Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after an extended illness.
Born Feb. 6, 1953, in Rowan County, she was a
daughter of Elsie Turner Benfield, Salisbury, and the late George Herman Benfield Sr. She
attended Western Carolina University and was employed by Hoechst Celanese (KoSa),
Salisbury. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church.
Survivors, in addition to her mother, include
husband Jimmy Lynn Cross; daughter Jennifer Cross, of the home; brother George H. Benfield
sr Jr., Salisbury; and sister Nancy Luther, Gastonia.
Services:2 p.m. Monday, Southside Baptist Church,
Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Ricky Brown. Burial, Brook Hill Cemetery, Rockwell.

Hilda Fleming Bame
BARBER The funeral will be Monday for Hilda
Gay Fleming Bame, 93, who died Friday (March 10, 2000) at her residence.
Born May 25, 1906, in Rowan County, Mrs. Bame was
the daughter of the late Edward Lee and Mattie Margaret Isabelle Sechler Fleming. Educated
in Rowan County Schools and Farm Life School, she was a homemaker and had helped with the
family businesses in Barber Junction and Carolina Beach.
She was a member of Cleveland United Methodist
Church and the United Methodist Women, a charter member of the Scotch-Ireland Eastern Star
and the Secret Pal Club.
Her husband, George Washington Bame, preceded her
in death.
Survivors include son James F. Bame, with whom she
made her home; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Monday, Cleveland United
Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Shirley Jones, pastor, and Penny Godfrey, Hospice
chaplain. Secret Pal club members will sit in a group. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

William H. Breedlove
The funeral will be Monday for William Henry
Breedlove, 80, 1845 Sells Road, who died Saturday (March 11, 2000) at his home. He had
been in declining health for more than two years.
Born May 13, 1919, in Rowan County, Mr. Breedlove
was the son of the late John Luther and Roxie Jane Parnell Breedlove. He was educated in
Cooleemee schools. Employed by Cone Mills for 43 years, he retired in 1978. He was a
member of Jerusalem Baptist Church in Davie County and the Willing Workers Sunday School
class.
A son, William Henry Breedlove Jr., died Nov. 19,
1972.
Survivors include wife Florence Correll Breedlove,
whom he married Jan. 22, 1941; sons Larry Breedlove, Salisbury, and Rick Breedlove,
Rockwell; daughters Linda B. Ritchie, Salisbury, and Brenda B. Bost, Kannapolis; six
grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Evelyn Boozer Eller
Evelyn Boozer Eller, 71, 635 E. Ridge Road, died
Friday (March 10, 2000) at Brightmoor Nursing Center. She had been in declining health for
six months.
Born Sept. 25, 1928, in Gastonia, Mrs. Eller was
the daughter of the late Alexander Buren and Edyth Goldsmith Boozer. Educated in Gaston
County Schools, she graduated from Randleman High School. She attended Womens
College in Greensboro and received her business administration degree from High Point
College.
She served on the board of directors of Johnson
Concrete as assistant secretary and was the companys office manager for the Central,
Piedmont, Willow Springs and Raeford divisions and Carolina Stalite Co. She was a member
of Bethel Lutheran Church, the John and Sallie Hoffman Circle of WELCA and received a life
membership in the Southern Lutheran Theological Seminary.
Survivors include her husband, Jack B. Eller, whom
she married June 6, 1953; a daughter, Evelyn Anne Eller, Salisbury; and a sister, Faye
Boozer Field of Salisbury.
Services: 2 p.m. today, Bethel Lutheran Church,
conducted by the Rev. Mark Reed. Employees of Johnson Concrete Co. and Carolina Stalite
Co. will be seated in a group for the service.

KANNAPOLIS Katherine Idelle Collins
Gilliam, 90, 904 Venus St., died Thursday (March 9, 2000) at Ochsner Medical Foundation,
New Orleans, La. She had been in declining health six years.
Born Dec. 16, 1909, in Hawkinsville, Ga., Mrs.
Gilliam was the daughter of the late J.R. Collins and Corrie Reynolds Collins Roseman. She
was senior class president at Kannapolis High School, where she graduated in 1926.
She was a charter member of Jackson Park United
Methodist Church, church secretary and director of the childrens division. She was a
lifetime member of United Methodist Women. She worked as a secretary for Cannon Mills Co.
and a proofreader for the Kannapolis Daily Independent.
Her husband, Lawrence F. Gilliam, and two
granddaughters preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters Gloria Esthus, New
Orleans, La. and Carey Beaube, Rainbow City, Ala.; son Stan Gilliam, Oak Ridge; sister
Erline Harkey, Kannapolis, four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

was the daughter of the late Minnie Griffin Williams. She retired from Cannon Mills Co.

Her husband, A.B. Griffin Sr., preceded her in

SPENCER Helen Wagner Peacock, 81, South
Yadkin Avenue, died Friday (March 10, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.
Born Aug. 6, 1918, in Rowan County, Mrs. Peacock
was the daughter of the late Charlie Austin and Pearl Sechler Wagner. She was educated at
China Grove High School. She retired from Rowan Memorial Hospital as pediatrics ward
secretary.
Her husband, Frederick R. Peacock, died in October
1986. They married May 3, 1935.
Survivors include sons Phillip R. Peacock,
Salisbury, and Stephen L. Peacock, Douglasville, Ga.; daughter Pegge P. Shaver of
Salisbury; sisters Ruby W. Hermansen, Forest City, Mrs. Defoy (Hazel) Miller, Lexington,
and Teena Saunders, Charlotte; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

son of the late Lonnie and Katherine Drum Warren. He was a retired employee of Chemspun
Spinning Mills.

ROCKWELL The funeral will be Monday for
Pearl Weaver, 70, who died Friday (March 10, 2000) at her residence. She had been in
declining health for four years.
Born Aug. 19, 1929, in Rowan County, Mrs. Weaver
was the daughter of the late Roscoe N. and Rosie Holshouser Weaver. She was educated in
Rowan County Schools and had worked for Celanese Corp. She was a member of First Baptist
Church of Rockwell and a former choir member and Sunday school secretary.
