Bruce Deal Arey

Bruce Deal Arey, 536 Catawba Road, 95, died Friday (March 10, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born May 9, 1904, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Arey was a son of the late Caroline Honeycutt and and William Reid Arey. He was educated in the Cabarrus County schools and at Mount Pleasant Collegiate Institute.

He was employed for 28 1/2 years by the Pender, Big Star and Colonial grocery chain. In 1953, he and J.G. Pope formed Pope and Arey Food Store on West Cemetery Street, where Mr. Arey worked until he retired in 1967.

He was a member of First United Church of Christ, where he served on the church council and was a member of the Katie Shive Sunday School Class and the Primetimers. A Meals on Wheels volunteer, he was the last surviving member of the building committee for the present church, which was completed in 1954.

His wife, Dera M. Arey, who died Aug. 13, 1984.

Survivors include son Javis M. Arey, Salisbury; daughters Mrs. Paul (Sara Jean)Propst and Mrs. Norman (Barbara) Beck, both of Salisbury, and Mrs. Robert (LIbby) Burton, Raleigh; brothers Dr. J.V. Arey and W.R. Arey Jr., both of Concord; nine grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, First United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. David L. Crook, pastor. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.

Hilda Gay Fleming Bame

BARBER — Hilda Gay Fleming Bame, 93, died Friday (March 10, 2000) at her home in Barber.

William Henry Breedlove

William Henry Breedlove, 80, 1845 Sells Road, died Saturday (March 11, 2000) at his residence.

Louvine Poplin Furr

CHARLOTTE — Louvine Poplin Furr, 72, Charlotte, died Thursday (March 9, 2000) at her residence.

Born June 22, 1927, in Albemarle, she was a daughter of the late Bertha Fay Morgan and John Bennett Poplin. A longtime member of First Baptist Church, Mrs. Furr worked as a bank manager for BB&T for 35 years before her retirement in 1992.

Her husband, Claude G. Furr, died in 1980.

Survivors include daughter Claudia Shawn Furr; son Chip B. Furr; sister Ruby Tucker; brother Cecil Poplin; and one grandson.

Services:3 p.m. Sunday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Charles D. Page.

Visitation: 1-2:45 p.m. Sunday, at the church. Burial, Canton Baptist Church, Albemarle.

George Ray Kirk

CHINA GROVE — George Ray Kirk, 74, 15555 Patterson St., died Friday (March 10, 2000) at the Salisbury Lutheran Home.

Born Dec. 8, 1925, in Rowan County, Mr. Kirk was a son of the late Mable Julia Lipe and Justice Hinton Kirk. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he had retired as a residential representative for Duke Power Co.

Mr. Kirk was a member of the China Grove Lions Club and Mount Zion United Church of Christ. He directed the Phase 5 Band.

Survivors include brothers Ray S. Kirk, Kannapolis, Raymond M. Kirk, Claremont, and Robert E. Kirk, China Grove; and sister Angie K. Sides, Sherrills Ford.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Mount Zion Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. William Campbell. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Marie Floyd Lyerly

Marie Floyd Lyerly, 89, Woodleaf, died Saturday (March 11, 2000) at The Laurels of Salisbury after a period of declining health.

Born April 27, 1910, in Greer, S.C., Mrs. Lyerly was a daughter of the late Ida Wilson and Eugene Presley Floyd. Educated in the South Carolina schools and at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College, she had retired as a licensed practical nurse. She was a member of Woodleaf United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Her husband, Nyman Edward “N.E.” Lyerly,died Sept. 23, 1967.

Survivors include son William Eugene Lyerly, Cornelia, Ga.; daughter Julia Lyerly Wetmore, Woodleaf; sisters Ida Floyd Jackson, Spartanburg, S.C., Junita F. Bright, Moore, S.C., and Doris Lindsey, Tallahoma, Tenn.; seven grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services:3 p.m. Sunday, Woodleaf United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Brenda Newman, pastor, and the Rev. Shirley Jones, pastor, Cleveland United Methodist Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: Following the services at the church. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Julia Lyerly Wetmore, 150 Farm Drive, Woodleaf.

Audrey Bradshaw Naveau

Audrey Bradshaw Naveau, 56, 5109 Old Concord Road, died Friday (March 10, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Jan. 13, 1944, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of Weldon Bradshaw Biggers, Salisbury, and the late Frank John Biggers. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was an insurance agent. She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include sons James C. Ware Jr. and Jerry Alan Ware, both of Salisbury, and Kenneth Franklin Ware, Asheville; brother Ronnie F. Biggers, Salisbury; sister Debbie Parciael, Salisbury; and two grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Christ United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Scott Ireland, pastor, and the Rev. Randy Foster. The body will be taken to the church at 2 p.m. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Monday, at the church.

Thurman Lee Overcash

CHINA GROVE —Thurman Lee Overcash, 54, 603 Frontier Circle, died Thursday (March 9, 2000)Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born June 13, 1945, in Iredell County, Mr. Overcash was a son of Evelyn Moore Overcash, China Grove, and the late Hoyle Overcash. He was a graduate of South Rowan High School and N.C. State College with a mechanical engineering degree.

Retired since 1988 from the designing engineer department of Duke Power, he was a member of First United Methodist Church, China Grove.

In addition to his mother, Mr. Overcash is survived by a brother, R. Morris Overcash, Statesville.

Services:3 p.m. Sunday, Northcrest Chapel, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. James Faggart. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of a brother, R. Morris Overcash, 605 Old Mocksville Road.

Helen Peacock

SPENCER — Helen Peacock, 81, Yadkin Avenue, died Saturday (March 11, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Dallas Roy Saunders

The Rev. Dallas Roy Saunders, 87, 726 Hidden Creek Circle, died Thursday (March 9, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after several weeks of declining health.

Born Aug. 21, 1912, in Montgomery County, he was a son of the late Fanny Lucina Reynolds and Jonah Webster Saunders. He was a graduate of God’s Bible School in Cincinnati,where he majored in theology.

A pastor in the Wesleyan Church, he was ordained in 1936 and served pastorates in Albemarle, Gold Hill, Lexington, Burlington, Forest City and Asheboro, as well as Trinity Wesleyan in Salisbury. He also served Wesleyan World Missions in Guyana and as district superintendent in Barbados. He was a member of Gold Hill Wesleyan Church.

His first wife, Vivian Taylor Saunders, died Jan. 29, 1985.

Survivors include wife Pansy Ficklin Saunders, whom he married Dec. 26, 1987; sons James Farrell Saunders, Gaffney, S.C., David Roy Saunders, East Amherst, N.Y., Dallas Stephen Saunders, Clemson, S.C.; daughter Sara Saunders Ramseur, Gastonia; stepdaughter Martha Ann Richardson, Salisbury; brother Jonah Franklin Saunders, Troy; sister Lilly Mae S. Eurry, Albemarle; 11 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services:10 a.m. Monday, Trinity Wesleyan Church, conducted by the Rev. Ernest Mullins, pastor, the Rev. W. Lee Cockerill and the Rev. Leon Thompson, N.C. Eastern district superintendent. Burial, Gold Hill Wesleyan Church cemetery.

Visitation:4-7 p.m. Sunday, Trinity Wesleyan Church.

ROCKWELL — Pearl Weaver, 70, Rockwell, died Friday (March 10, 2000)at her residence.

Jane Moncure Welch

Jane Moncure Kranz Welch, 85, Penick Village, Southern Pines, formerly of Salisbury, died Friday (March 10, 2000) at Penick Village after a period of declining health.

Born Aug. 7, 1914, in Memphis, Tenn., Mrs. Welch was a daughter of the late Elizabeth Moncure Norment and James P. Kranz. She attended Macalester College and graduated from the University of Minnesota.

A homemaker, she formerly taught part-time at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. Mrs. Welch was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.

Her husband, Charles William Welch, died Dec. 19, 1984.

Survivors include son William M. Welch, Arlington, Va.; sister Elizabeth K. Johnson, St. Paul, Minn.; and two grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Monday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. John C. Southern Jr., rector. Burial, City Memorial Park.

Visitation:10-11 a.m. Monday, at the church.
