Kate Thrift Baker

KANNAPOLIS — Kate Thrift Baker, 83, 110 W. Universal St., died Wednesday (March 8, 2000) at her home after a year of declining health.

Born Nov. 4, 1916, in York County, S.C., Mrs. Baker was a daughter of the late Isiah and Margaret Mickell Thrift. She was educated in the schools of York County. Retired since 1982 from Cannon Mills, No. 2 weave room, she attended First Evangelical Methodist Church, Kannapolis.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, James A. Baker; son James A. Baker Jr., Richmond, Va.; daughter Frankie Gosa, of the home; brother Jake Thrift, Mobile, Ala.; sisters Viola Huskins, Cherryville, and Christine Ragan, Charlotte; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Brian Hammond. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Hattie McGee Gilliard

RALEIGH — The funeral will be Saturday for Hattie Mae McGee Gilliard, 409 E. South St., Apartment 1, who died Sunday (March 5, 2000).

Born in Oconee County, S.C., Mrs. Gilliard was a daughter of the late Cato David and Letter McGee. She was a member of the United House of Prayer for All People.

Survivors include daughter Gracie S. Kearney, Raleigh; sisters Bessie Mae McGee, Fannie Bell Williams and Susie Alexander, all of Salisbury, and Ethel Lee Garvin and Lillie McGee, both of Clemson, S.C.; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, United House of Prayer for All People. Burial, Kearney Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30-2 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Mark Charles Goodman

TROUTMAN — Mark Charles Goodman, 39, Levo Road, died Tuesday (March 7, 2000).

Born Jan. 25, 1961, in Mooresville, Mr. Goodman was a son of Genevieve Leonard Goodman, Mooresville, and the late Robert A. Goodman. Reared in Huntersville, he was a 1979 graduate of North Mecklenburg High School. Employed by Southern Door, Mooresville, he was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church, Mooresville.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Rose Weber Goodman; son Michael Paul Goodman, of the home; daughter Megan Rose Goodman, of the home; brothers Robert “Bubba” Goodman,Creston, Tom Goodman, Huntersville, and Phil Goodman, Stanley; and sister Mrs. Kevin (Margaret “Meg”)Pugh, Charlotte.

Services: Mass of Christian burial, 10 a.m. Friday, St. Therese Catholic Church, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. William Lynch. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park, Mooresville.

Thelma Windham Tyner

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Thelma Windham Tyner, 74, 719 Pine St., who died Wednesday (March 8, 2000) at Big Elm Nursing Center after a year of declining health and two months of serious illness.

Born June 19, 1925, in Lamar, S.C., Mrs. Tyner was a daughter of the late Abe and Lillie Windham. She was educated in the schools of Chesterfield County, S.C. A Baptist, she had retired from Cannon Mills’ cutting room.

Her husband, Carson Tyner, died in 1993.

Survivors include sons John Tyner, Mooresville, and James Tyner, Carson Tyner Jr. and Harvey Jordan, all of Kannapolis; daughter Alice Faye Gainey, China Grove; brothers Jessie Windham, Gold Hill, and Roland, John, Willie and Arnie Windham, all of Winnsboro, S.C.; sisters Kathleen Combs, Mary Collins and Lillie Mae Owens, all of Chesterfield, S.C., and Magalene and Blanche Windham, both of Winnsboro, S.C.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren,

Dolly Jean Lefler Poplin

The funeral will be Friday for Dolly Jean Lefler Poplin, 68, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (March 8, 2000) at Rowan RegionalMedical Center after a period of declining health.

Born Sept. 1, 1931, Mrs. Poplin was a daughter of the late Bennie E. and Ruth Elizabeth Pepper Lefler. A homemaker, she was educated in the Rowan County schools. She was a member of Freedom Baptist Church.

Her husband, Floyd Clyde Poplin, died July 24, 1974.

Survivors include sons Floyd C. Poplin Jr., Faith, and Robbie Allen Poplin, Salisbury; daughters Mrs. Lloyd (Carol)Stirewalt and Mrs. Bobby (Jean)Myers, both of Salisbury, and Mrs. Boyce (Brenda)Blackwood, Granite Quarry; brothers Bill Lefler, Albemarle, Bennie Lefler, Salisbury, Jerry Lefler, Louisville, Texas, and JimmyLefler, Faith; sisters Betty Creswell, Peggy Beck, Frankie Smith, Pat Goodman, Deanne Upright and Rita Kizzah, all of Salisbury, Dot Gardner, Mocksville, Juanita Overcash, Albemarle, Donna Shinn, Cleveland, Judy Weaver, China Grove, and Ruby Lentz, New London; 12 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Edward Junior Earnhardt

COOLEEMEE — The funeral will be Friday for Edward Junior Earnhardt, 78, Cooleemee, who died Wednesday (March 8, 2000) at theHefner VAMedical Center, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.

Born Nov. 19, 1921, in Rowan County, Mr. Earnhardt was a son of the late Charles Edward and Ida Mae Thompson Earnhardt. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.

A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, he had retired from the military after 20 years of service. He was a member of Union Lutheran Church.

Survivors include daughters Nita Morgan,Cleveland, and Diane Lane, Rock Hill, S.C.; brothers Frank Everhardt, Cooleemee, and Robert Everhardt and Grady “Pete” Everhardt, both of Salisbury; sisters Edna and Mabel Bentley, both of Salisbury; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Friday, Lyerly Funeral Home’s James C. LyerlyChapel, conducted by the Rev. Darrell Norris, pastor, Union Lutheran Church. Burial, church cemetery. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Brenda Morgan Morton

ALBEMARLE — Brenda Gail Morgan Morton, 58, 32158 Old Parker Road, died Wednesday (March 8, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born March 29, 1941, in Stanly County, Mrs. Morton was a daughter of the late Marvin Fletcher and Odessa Morris Morgan. She was a screen printer.

Her husband, Floyd Kenneth Eudy, died in 1978.

Survivors include sons Jimmy Eudy, Albemarle, and Dale Eudy, New London; daughter Cathy Bennett, Albemarle; and seven grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Robert Hart. Burial, Fairview Memorial park.

Dorothy Ridenhour Martin

The funeral will be Friday for Dorothy Elizabeth Brown Ridenhour Martin, 86, Lithonia,Ga., formerly of Salisbury, who died Monday (March 6, 2000) at Starcrest Nursing Home in Lithonia after a period of declining health.

Born Nov. 27, 1913, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Martin was a daughter of the late J. Frank and Sarhah Cavina Brown. She was educated in the Cabarrus County schools. A homemaker, she was a former member of First Presbyterian Church of Salisbury.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Martin, and sons Franklin D. Ridenhour and Owen E. Ridenhour.

Survivors include sons Johnny A. Ridenhour, Salisbury, Tommy L. Ridenhour, Dallas, Texas, and Hayden D. Ridenhour, Murphy; daughter Faye Barnhardt, Covington, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.

Teresa Pressley Goodman

CHINA GROVE — Teresa Pressley Goodman, 37, 545 Menius Road, died Tuesday (March 7, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Dec. 2, 1962, in Rowan County, Mrs. Goodman was a daughter of Donald and Ruby Pressley Pressley, Kannapolis. She was employed by Eckerd Drugs in China Grove. She had earlier spent 13 years as a cafeteria manager in the Rowan and Cabarrus county school systems.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include husband Derek Goodman; daughter Shasta Goodman, of the home; son Casey Goodman, of the home; and sister Mrs. Derrall (Pam)Turner, Concord.

LANDIS —Albert Jones, 89, 250 Bishop Lane, died Thursday (March 9, 2000) at the Brian Center, Concord.

Mae Lyerly White McNeely

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be Saturday for Mae Camille Lyerly White McNeely, 96, formerly of China Grove, who died Wednesday (March 8, 2000) at Spencer Health Care Center, Spencer.

Born Feb. 24, 1904, in Rowan County, Mrs. McNeely was a daughter of the late David Luther and Lucy Jane Miller Lyerly. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she had retired from Cannon Mills’ sheet department.

She was a member of Mount Moriah Lutheran Church, where she was active in the Sunday school and WELCA.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Reginald C. White, who died in 1938; her second husband, Robert E. McNeely, who died in 1978; a son, R.C. Adam White, and a stepson, Jim McNeely, who both died in 1996; and a stepdaughter, Margaret Beaver.

Survivors include stepdaughters Sadie Wilhelm, China Grove, and Sarah Witherspoon, Kannapolis; brother Carr Lyerly, Salisbury; sisters Bertha Peeler, Salisbury, and Nina Mathis, Greenwood, S.C.; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

Elmer Thomas Zimmerman

MOCKSVILLE — The funeral will be Saturday for Elmer Thomas Zimmerman, 83, Mullins Road, who died Wednesday (March 8, 2000) at his home.

Born July 29, 1916, in Davie County, Mr. Zimmerman was a son of the late Daniel and Julia SprinkleZimmerman. Retired from Davie Floor Co., he was a member of Hope Baptist Tabernacle.

Survivors include wife Sarah Everhardt Zimmerman; foster son Todd Zimmerman, of the home; daughters Betty A. Nichols, Gelena, Mo., and Vasta Z. Pruitt, Beneva, Fla.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Antoinette ‘Tony’ Wike

LEXINGTON — Gertrude Antoinette “Tony” Geiger Wike, 83, 5 Woodcrest Drive, died Monday (March 6, 2000) at her home.

Born May 21, 1916, in Henderson County, Mrs. Wike was a daughter of the late Leland Ray and Gertrude Wynn Geiger. She received her bachelor of arts degree from Coker College and her master’s degree from Middlebury College.

A teacher for 30 years, she spent the last 14 of those years teaching French at Davidson County Community College. She was a member of First United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Carl Edwin Wike, died Jan. 28, 2000.

Survivors include daughter Antoinette Ray Wike, Cary; and sons Carl Edwin Wike Jr., Framingham, Mass., and Jonathan Neil Wike, Nashville, Tenn.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, First United Methodist Church, conducted by Dr. J. Hurley Thomas III and the Rev. Jill Alventosa-Brown.

Marie Eddings Meeks

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Marie Eddings Meeks, 92, Caremoore Retirement Center, who died Wednesday (March 8, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born March 27, 1907, in Anderson, S.C., Mrs. Meeks was a daughter of the late John Henry and Mary Lelia Ivey Eddings. Retired from Cannon Mills, she was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, China Grove.

Her husband, Ruben J. Meeks, and a son, James Edward Meeks, preceded her in death.

Survivors include son Ruben A. Meeks, China Grove; daughter Louise Meeks Carter, Spartanburg, S.C.; sister Brite Sisk, Landis; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Friday, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. G. Wayne Sipe.

Elaine ‘Laine’ Hardin Gore

WINSTON-SALEM — Elaine “Laine” Hardin Gore, 52, La Casa Boulevard, died Wednesday (March 8, 2000) at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home.

A Salisbury native, Mrs. Gore was the daughter of the late Pete and Ogradus Hardin. Educated in the Salisbury schools, she was a 1965 graduate of Price High School. In 1969, she received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Livingstone College, Salisbury.

During her early years she taught in the Danville, Va., schools. She later moved to Winston-Salem and was employed with Roadway Express in Kernersville.

A former member of Soldiers Memorial AMEZionChurch, Salisbury, she sang in the Children’s Choir. She later joined St. Peter’s World Outreach Center, where she wrote articles for the church newsletter.

Survivors include her husband of 26 years, Willie H. Gore; children Mrs. Pernell (Kia Gore) Callahan and Jovon Gore; brother Charles Pete Hardin; and sister Mary Hardin.

Services: 1 p.m. Saturday, St. Peter’s World Outreach Center, conducted by Dr. James C. Hash. Burial,Evergreen Cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30-1 p.m. Saturday at the church.
