Irene Teeter Alexander

MOORESVILLE — Irene Teeter Alexander, 92, of Knight Lane, died Friday (March 3, 2000) at Huntersville Oaks, Huntersville.

Born March 25, 1907, in Iredell County, Mrs. Alexander was the daughter of the late Marshall and Emily Walter Teeter. She retired from Burlington Industries and was a member of Prospect Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. Alexander was preceded in death by her husband, Royce V. Alexander.

Survivors include sisters Frances Boyd, Huntersville, and Martha Meredith, Mooresville.

Services:Graveside, 10:30 Monday, Prospect Presbyterian Church Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Joanne Hull officiating. Memorial service, 11 a.m. Prospect Presbyterian Church.

Visitation:6-8 tonight, Cavin Funeral Home, Mooresville.

William ‘Monk’ Argo Sr.

KANNAPOLIS — William Leslie “Monk” Argo Sr., 89, formerly of Hemlock Avenue, died Friday (March 4, 2000) at Brian Center, Concord.

Born March 2, 1911, in Oglethorpe County, Ga., Mr. Argo was a son of the late Janet Hassie Couch and William Jasper Argo. Mr. Argo worked in Cannon Mills Co. Plant 1’s card room and bleachery department for about 60 years until retiring in 1976. He also worked part-time at the former H.R. Yoos Motor Company, Kannapolis, in earlier years.

Mr. Argo was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church, Kannapolis. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and had lived in Kannapolis for most of his life.

His wife, Mabel Overcash Argo, died April 27, 1996.

Survivors include sons William L. Argo Jr., Kingsland, Ga., Jerry W. Argo, Charlotte and Harold C. Argo, Concord; daughter Linda A. Huffman, Mt. Mourne; brothers Ray, Eugene and Pete Argo, all of Athens, Ga. and J.C. Argo, Pittsboro; sister Hannah Smith, Lexington; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Otis Snow and the Rev. Tom Huneycutt.

Edward Lawrence Copony

Edward Lawrence Copony, 84, of Trinity Oaks, died Friday (March 3, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

Born Jan. 30, 1916, in Chicago, Ill., he was a son of the late Gertrude Hodgson and Alfred Copony. Mr. Copony was a graduate of the Michigan College of Mining and Technology with a degree in mechanical engineering.

He held numerous patents for petroleum delivery equipment and played a prominent part in the development of modern, automated fuel dispensing systems. He retired in 1981 after 24 years as manager of research and development for the Petroleum Equipment Group of Dresser Industries in Salisbury, Md. Before joining Dresser he held various engineering and production positions with Chrysler Corporation, Vickers Division and Philco Corporation.

Mr. Copony served for 20 years on the School Building Commission of the Board of Education of Wicomico County, Md.

He was an All-State football player with Mount Clemmons High School in Michigan, where he played starting tackle in the State Championship Team in 1932 and was team captain in 1933.

Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Jean Skelton Copony; son James A. Copony, Charlottesville, Va.; daughters Susan C. Field, Athens, Ga., Lynn C. Hales, Salisbury, and Martha C. Hafler, Centerburg, Ohio; brother Herman Copony, Port Huron, Mich.; sister Dorothy Copony, Dearborn, Mi.; and six grandchildren.

Services:Memorial service, 2 p.m. Monday, First Presbyterian Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Lewis and the Rev. James H. Foil Jr.

Visitation: The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall after the service.

Louise Smith Dulin

Louise Smith Dulin, 82, Mt. Hope Church Road, died Saturday (March 4, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 8, 1917, in Gaston County, she was a daughter of the late Zula Coon and Giles Edward Smith Sr. A graduate of Farm Life School in China Grove, Mrs. Dulin was retired from Cannon Mills’ ordering and data processing department. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, China Grove.

Her husband, P.O. Dulin, died July 20, 1997, and son Phillip Dulin died Jan. 3, 1958.

She is survived by brothers Richard “Gene”Smith, China Grove, and Harry Kenneth Smith Sr., Salisbury.

Services:3 p.m. Monday, Linn Honeycutt Northcrest Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Rusty Inman. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation:2-3 p.m. Monday, Linn Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove.

Julia Carpenter Eury

MT. GILEAD — Julia Carpenter Eury, 82, 391 Montgomery Shores Drive, died Saturday (March 4, 2000) at her home.

Born March 31, 1917, in Stanly County, Mrs. Eury was a daughter of the late Birtie Melinda Helms Carpenter Pinion and James Carpenter. She worked for C&A, Norwood, for 40 years and retired as a winder from Wiscassett Mills.

Mrs. Eury was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Ray Eury Sr. and son James Robert “Bill”Eury.

Survivors include son Willie Ray Eury Jr.,Mt. Holly; daughters Diann Roberson, Columbia, S.C., and Bertha Eury “Beaver”Forrest, Mt. Gilead; brother Robert Pinion, Norwood; and sister Mattie Boysworth, Albemarle.

Services:11 a.m., Hartsell Funeral Home’s Lefler Memorial Chapel, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Marvin Huneycutt. Burial, Norwood Cemetery.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home-Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Beaver Forrest, 391 Montgomery Shores Drive, Mt. Gilead.

 

Lucy Morgan Gantt

ALBEMARLE — Lucy Morgan Gantt, 87, 830 N. Ninth St., died Saturday (March 4, 2000) at her home.

Born Nov. 1, 1912, in Stanly County, Mrs. Gantt was a daughter of the late Mack Craig and Carrie Miller Morgan. She was a retired homemaker and a member of Main Street United Methodist Church. Mrs. Gantt was a member of the Addie Kron Garden Club.

Mrs. Gantt was preceded in death by her husband, Grover L. Gantt.

Survivors include sons Jim and Steve G. Gantt, both of Albemarle, and L.M. “Skip” Gantt, Columbia,S.C.; brother Mack C. “Preacher”Morgan, Albemarle; sister Lillian M. Smith, Worton, Md.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services:Memorial, 11 a.m. Monday, Main Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. David M. Rorie. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park, Albemarle.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Robert F. Hall Sr.

Cleveland — Robert F. Hall Sr., 79, died Saturday (March 4, 2000) at the Laurels of Salisbury after two years of declining health and three weeks of serious illness.

Born Oct. 13, 1920, in Newark, N.Y., Mr. Hall was a son of the late Ida Mae Robinson and Lloyd Lewis Hall. Educated in Syracuse, N.Y. schools, Mr. Hall was employed as a master electrician before retiring. He was U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Jeanne Sizer Hall, whom he married April 27, 1946; son Robert F. “Bob”Hall Jr., Salisbury; daughter Debra H. Zimmerman, Salisbury; brother Limon Hall, Orlando, Fla.; sisters Mrs. William (Violet) Myall and Idella Hall, both of Orlando, Fla.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The body will be cremated.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, at the home of daughter Debra H. Zimmerman, 191 E. Chamblee Drive.

Helen Mae Wyatt Hunt

Helen Mae Wyatt Hunt, 82, of Salisbury, died Saturday (March 4, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, following a period of declining health.

Born May 12, 1917, in Rowan County, Mrs. Hunt was a daughter of the late Savannah Doby and Robert Lee Wyatt. Educated in Rowan County Schools, she worked in the Henderson School Cafeteria and then Ketner’s Cafeteria until her retirement. She was a member of North Main Baptist Church and a teacher of the Lottie Moon Bible Class.

Her husband, James Edward Hunt, died in 1972.

Survivors include sons Michael Hunt, China Grove, and Jimmy Hunt, Spencer; daughters Donna Agner and Linda Carter, both of Salisbury; seven grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services: Burial, 9:30 a.m. Monday, conducted by the Rev. Dale Robertson, pastor of North Main Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation:7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. The family will receive friends at the home of Wanda Dwiggins, 216 N. Rowan Ave., Spencer.

Richard ‘Rick’ Kluttz

Richard Lewis “Rick” Kluttz, 41, #9 White Oak Circle, died Friday (March 3, 2000)at his work from an accident on the job.

Born March 28, 1958, in Ft. Campbell, Ky., Mr. Kluttz was a son of Martha Beacham Kluttz and Lewis C. Kluttz, both of Granite Quarry. A 1977 graduate of East Rowan High School, Mr. Kluttz also graduated from Rowan Technical Community College and attended classes at Davidson County Community College. Mr. Kluttz worked for Packing Services of Carolina in Rockwell, where he was a production supervisor. He was a member of Shiloh United Methodist Church.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include son Hunter Dean Kluttz, Salisbury, and brother Brad Kluttz, Granite Quarry.

Services:3 p.m. Monday, Shiloh United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Kay Gottula and the Rev. Bill Hoyle. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lewis C. Kluttz, 107 N. Walnut St., Granite Quarry.

Martin Luther Way

Martin Luther Way, 77, 213 Dan St., died Friday (March 3, 2000) at Carolina’s Medical Center, Charlotte, after two weeks of serious illness.

Born June 15, 1922, in Salisbury, Mr. Way was a son of the late Bessie Suther and George Way. Educated in Cabarrus County schools, Mr. Way was a truck driver for Salisbury Lumber Company for 16 years before retiring in 1985. A Lutheran, Mr. Luther was U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of the Model A Club and the V8 Club.

Survivors include his wife, Elsie Marie Hagler Way, whom he married April 9, 1945; daughters Laura Denton and Frances Allman, both of Woodleaf, BrendaKinsey, Cooleemee, and Gloria Horner, Salisbury; five grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. Marcus B. Hovis, minister of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Tuesday, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Jerry Lee Wilson

Jerry Lee Wilson, 34, 105 Allen Lane, died Friday (March 3, 2000)at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after nine months of declining health.

Born Sept. 21, 1965, in Rowan County,Mr. Wilson was a son Patsy Kimbell Wilson and Carl Wilson, both of Salisbury. Mr. Wilson was a graduate of North Rowan High School and attended Bob Jones University as well as Rowan-Cabarrus Community College. He was a detention deputy for the Rowan County Sheriff’s Department and worked for P&G Security. Mr. Wilson was a member of Christian Faith Baptist Church, Lexington, and served in the U.S. Army.

Survivors include sons Joseph and Matthew Wilson, both of the home; daughter Tabitha Wilson, of the home; brother Terry Wilson, Spencer; sisters Joan Robinette, Salisbury and Jackie McClanahan, San Antonio, Texas; and grandmother Hazel Kimbell.

Services: Noon Monday, Summersett Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Wade Powell, Christian Faith Baptist Church, Lexington. Burial, U.S. National Cemetery, with military graveside rites conducted by the Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.
