Luther Samuel BarbeeALBEMARLE Luther Samuel Barbee, 75, 1913 Mountain Creek Road, died
Wednesday (March 1, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.
Born Sept. 19, 1924, in Stanly
County, Mr. Barbee was a son of the late F. Titus Franklin and Nelia Ann Whitley Barbee.
He had retired as an electrician with Bryant Electric, High Point. A Baptist, he served in
the U.S. Marines during World War II.
Survivors include wife Faye Medlin
Barbee, Albemarle; son Gary Franklin Barbee, Salisbury; daughter Pam Renegar, Albemarle;
sisters Florence Chaney, Albemarle, and Edna Hartsell, Richfield; four grandchildren; and
four great-grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Hartsell
Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Glenn Johnson. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the
funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on MountainCreek Road.
Mary H. Buckhannon
CHINA GROVE Mary Katherine
Huffman Buckhannon, 93, 201 W. Thom St., died Tuesday (Feb. 29, 2000) at Big Elm Nursing
Center, Kannapolis.
Born March 23, 1906, in West
Virginia, Mrs. Buckhannon was a daughter of the late Charles H. and Lucy Florence Ashcraft
Huffman. Educated in the West Virginia schools, she was a homemaker.
Her husband, Harry Buckhannon,
died in 1975.
Survivors include daughter Edith
Pollard, Moyock; brother Bill Huffman, Spencer; grandson James Jim Kurtz of
China Grove, with whom she had made her home; two other grandchildren; nine
great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services:None. Burial will be at
Woodlawn Memorial Gardens, Norfolk, Va.

Gail Beck Carriker
The funeral will be Friday for
Gail Beck Carriker, 61, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (March 1, 2000) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center after a year of declining health and a week of serious illness.
Born Oct. 7, 1938, in Rowan
County, Mrs. Carriker was a daughter of the late Grover Harold and Lucy Wise Beck. She was
a 1956 graduate of Boyden High School. A member of North Main Baptist Church, she had
retired in 1996 as North Carolina supervisor of Camp Oil Co. (Sav-A-Ton).
A daughter, Cathy C. Sprinkle,
preceded her in death.
Survivors include husband Raymond
Carriker, whom she married Oct. 24, 1959; daughters Crystal C. Lomax and Kelly Carriker,
both of Salisbury; brother Grover E. Beck, Salisbury; and six grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 11 a.m.
Friday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Dale Robertson, pastor, North Main
Baptist Church.
Visitation: None.

Perlie Marlow Laslow
CHARLOTTE Perlie May Marlow
Laslow, 62, Charlotte, died Wednesday (March 1, 2000) at Genesis ElderCare, Salisbury,
after 10 months of declining health.
Born Nov. 28, 1937, in Charleston,
S.C., Mrs. Laslow was a daughter of the late Bill and Minnie Viola Tyler Chambers Marlow.
A Baptist, she had worked as a store cashier.
She was preceded in death by
daughters Crystal Gail Cumbee, Tonia Lynn Cornell and Lee-Ann Nowell.
Survivors include husband Thomas
Andrew Laslow, whom she married Oct. 1, 1980; sons Robert Eugene Nowell, Jr., Memphis,
Tenn., and John Dorson Nowell, Charleston, S.C.; daughters Cookie Spellings,
Memphis,Tenn., Theresa Lynn Nowell, Charleston, S.C., and Judy Lejean Ritchie, Salisbury;
and two grandchildren.
Services: A service of remembrance
will be held at a later date.
Visitation: None. The family will
be at the home of daughter Judy L. Ritchie, Salisbury.

Dr. Wayland N. McKenzie
ALBEMARLE Funeral services
were to be held this morning for Dr. Wayland Nash McKenzie, 88, 435 N. 10th St., who died
Tuesday (Feb. 29, 2000) at Stanly Manor.
Born Dec. 6, 1911, in Ellerbe, Dr.
McKenzie was a son of the late Martin and Mary Ethel Tyson McKenzie. A retired family
physician, he practiced general medicine in Albemarle from 1945 to 1987.
He attended Norwood Elementary
School and was a 1928 graduate of Norwood High School. He graduated from Duke University
in 1931 and received his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1935. He
did his internship at Norfolk General Hospital, Norfolk, Va.
He received a certificate in
public health in 1937 from the University of North Carolina. A Stanly County health
officer from 1937 to 1945, he was involved with the U.S. Public Service Reserve during
World War II.
He was a member of Central United
Methodist Church and a life member of the N.C. Medical Society. He was a former member of
the Stanly County and American medical associations.
Survivors include wife Alice Lacy
McKenzie; sons Wayland Nash McKenzie Jr., Columbia, Mo., William Martin McKenzie, Spruce
Pine, and Charles Lacy McKenzie, Weaverville; five grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.
The Rev. Benjamin F. Wilson was to
officiate at the 11 a.m. service today at Hartsell Funeral Homes Lefler Memorial
Chapel. Burial was to be at Fairview Memorial Park.
The family will be at the home on
North 10th Street.
