Pharr selected MVP; North girls tie for 2nd

SALISBURY POST

GREENSBORO — North Rowan junior LaTasha Pharr was voted Most Valuable Participant while leading the Cavaliers to a second-place tie here Saturday in the state indoor track and field meet.

Pharr won the triple jump with a leap of 39 feet, 7 inches and the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.33 seconds. She also was runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 18 feet and fourth in the 300 with a time of 41.90.

Garette Hunter added a third place for the Cavaliers with a shot put of 37-1 1/2.

Charlotte Olympic won the team championship with 54.5 points. North Rowan, the 1999 champion, and Mount Tabor tied with 38.

“I’m very happy for LaTasha,” said North coach Brian Mills. “She works hard. Going into the meet, I had asked her to do something for her and the team that she normally wouldn’t do — that’s run the 300. I knew she would do well in the hurdles and both the long and triple jump. I figured if we could get her in the 300, it would help the team out overall. As it turned out, she did help the team. She worked hard for the team. I was pleased with her effort.”

Charlotte Olympic won the team championship with 54.5 points. North Rowan, the 1999 champion, and Mount Tabor tied with 38.

Garette Hunter added a third place for the Cavaliers with a shot put of 37-1 1/2, giving North a crucial six points.

“Garette threw well. It was a personal record,” pointed out Mills.

Pharr said of winning her first indoor MVP award, “I felt I had a pretty good meet. It’s kind of hard to do four events in one day, but that’s part of being an athlete. I was proud of myself. I worked hard for it, and it was kind of nice to receive an award for your hard work.”

As for running the 300, the All-American said, “It’s not fun, but I had to help my team. I’m a leader, so I have to do it.”

Mills took only three athletes to the meet. TiffanyMack competed in the long jump.

Coach Robert Steele’s North boys finished 17th with eight points. Shot putter Brian Alford accounted for those points with a second-place heave of 46-10.

Four North athletes have qualified for the Nike national indoor meet inIndianapolis, Ind., next weekend, but Pharr is the only one who will make the trip. That’s because qualifiers Thomas Mashore, Malachi Brown and Jonquil Walker of the North boys team are injured.

Pharr is entered in the triple jump and the 60-meter hurdles.

“I want to jump 41-7 in the triple jump and I want to run at least 8.4 or 8.5 in the hurdles,” she said.

Her personal bests in those events are 40-9 1/2 and 8.63.
