Dr. William Harrison Freeman, 77, 902 Colonial Drive, died Thursday (June 29, 2000) at his
home.
Born Nov. 8, 1922, in Rockingham County, he was a son of
the late Walter Davis and Elizabeth Carter Freeman. He was a graduate of Wake Forest
College and Bowman Gray School of Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of
Surgeons.
A retired surgeon, Dr. Freeman practiced from 1952 to 1989.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the the Korean War and World War II.
Dr. Freeman was a member of First Baptist Church, where he
served as chairman of the board of deacons and Sunday school teacher. He was a former
member of the Albemarle Rotary Club.
A member of the Stanly County Medical Society, he served as
president of the Bowman Gray Alumni Association.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Evelyn Stephens
Freeman; son Bill Freeman, Atlanta; daughters Beverly Petty, Atlanta, and Cynthia Goodwin,
Monroe; brother Bill Freeman, Charlotte; sisters, Barbara Dunton, Columbus, Ga., and
Elaine Poats, Hickory; and four grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, First Baptist Church, conducted
by the Rev. Harold McDonald. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Marshall Sig Frye
CHINA GROVE Marshall Curry Sig Frye, 86,
1270 Highway 153, died Thursday, (June 29, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center, Concord,
after an illness of four months.
Born Jan. 15, 1914, in Rowan County, Mr. Frye was a son of
the late David Benjamin and Katherine Owens Frye. Before retiring in 1981, he had been
employed for 50 years at Cannon Mills, Plant No. 1, as a weaving supervisor. He also was
owner and operator of Frye Construction Co. for many years.
He was a former member of the YMCAs John R. Mott
Mens Club.
Mr. Frye was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church,
Kannapolis, where he was active in the W.J. Bullock Sunday School Class and had served as
president and teacher. He helped build the church parsonage.
A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II
as a chief petty officer.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Phillips Frye; daughter
Millicent Lou Frye, Kannapolis; brother Calvin S. Frye, Landis; sister Sara F. Nichols,
Landis; two grandsons; and one great-granddaughter.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Whitleys Funeral Home
Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Don Shuman and Sarah Weaver. Burial, Carolina
Memorial Park, with military rites by DAV Chapter 27 and the U.S. Navy.

Stephen Andrew Gobble
WINGATE Stephen Andrew Gobble, 22 months, died
Wednesday (June 28, 2000) at Union Regional Medical Center.
Born Aug. 10, 1998, in Mecklenburg County, he was a son of
Samuel and Jennifer Walters Gobble.
In addition to his parents, survivors include brother
Joshua Gobble; sister Lindsay Gobble; paternal grandparents, Larry and Martha Gobble,
Salisbury; and maternal grandparents, Ronnie and Marcia Walters, also of Salisbury.

Frances Readling Jacobs
CHINA GROVE Frances Readling Jacobs, 75, 205 W.
Centerview St., died Thursday (June 29, 2000) at her residence.
Born April 18, 1925, in Rowan County, Mrs. Jacobs was a
daughter of the late Maggie Roth and Arthur Readling. A homemaker, she was educated in the
Rowan County schools. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Shalom
Circle.
Survivors include her husband, George Gray Jacobs; son
Steven G. Jacobs, Woodleaf; daughter Angela Jacobs, China Grove; and three grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home,

Alice Respass Melton
The funeral will be Saturday for Alice Ray Respass Melton,
72, 205 W. Corriher St., who died Thursday (June 29, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical
Center.
Born Jan. 9, 1928, in Tarboro, Mrs. Melton was a daughter
of the late Guy and Minnie Hunnings Respass. Educated in the Tarboro schools, she received
her GED from Rowan-Cabarrus Community College at age 54. She had retired in 1985 from Big
Elm Nursing Home, Kannapolis.
A daughter, Beth Spruill, died in 1972.
Survivors include her husband, Clarence Leo Melton; sons
Irving Woody Spruill and Brian Randy Spruill, both of the home;
daughters Connie Britt of the home and Kathy Hess, Concord; brother Guy L. Respass,
Chesapeake, Va.; sisters Gladys Nelson, Wilmington, and Joyce Hutto,Orangeburg, S.C. ;
eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

ROCKWELL Ruth Evola Ridings Moose, 74, formerly of
Rockwell, died Friday (June 30, 2000) at the Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home.

Anna Dameron Owen
Anna Dameron Owen, 88, formerly of Susan Lane, died
Thursday, (June 29, 2000) at Brightmoor Nursing Home after three years of declining health
and one week of serious illness.
Born Sept. 27, 1911, in Wake County, Mrs. Owen was a
daughter of the late Elizabeth Lalan and Steven Stephenson. Educated in the Wake County
schools, she was a former saleswoman at Guyes of Salisbury. She was a member of Edgewood
Baptist Church, Cooleemee, and the Mothers Sunday School Class.
Her husband, James Henry Owen, died July 10, 1995.
Survivors include son Ralph Dameron, Woodleaf; stepsons
Tony B. Owen, Cary, and James H. Owen Jr., Matthews; stepdaughters, Phyllis Peeler,
Salisbury, and Trish Neer of West Chicago, Ill.; three grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.

Frances Lowder Safrit
Frances Lowder Safrit, 76, died Thursday, (June 29, 2000)
at the Salisbury Lutheran Home after several years of declining health.
Born June 20, 1924, in Rowan County, Mrs. Safrit was the
daughter of the late Sally Robertson and Richard E. Lowder. A graduate of Boyden High
School, she also completed cosmetology school. For more than 35 years, she owned and
operated Frances Beauty Shop at 843 S. Main St.
She was a member of Stallings Memorial Baptist Church and
VFW Post 3006s Ladies Auxiliary.
Her husband, J. Bruce Safrit, died Nov. 18, 1984.
Survivors include son John Bruce Johnny Safrit,
Salisbury; daughter Suzie Ann Taylor, Charlotte; brothers Jack Lowder, Jacksonville, Fla.,
and Dr. William Lowder, Kannapolis; sisters Nancy Raynor and Ruby Arey, both of Salisbury,

Huneycutt Mill Road, died Wednesday (June 28, 2000) as the result of an automobile
accident.
Born March 14, 1981, in Stanly County, he was a son of
James S. and Teresa Montgomery Watson of the home. He was a recent graduate of South
Stanly High School. Employed by Homestead Tile, he was a member of Union Grove Baptist
Church.
In addition to his parents, survivors include sister Reagan
Watson of the home; and maternal grandparents Michael and Lucy Montgomery, Albemarle.
