Marie Grooms Bradshaw

KANNAPOLIS — Marie Grooms Bradshaw, 81, 907 Kimberly Lane, died Tuesday (June 27, 2000), at 391 Knoll Court.

Born May 6, 1919, in Pageland, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Pearl and J.W. Grooms. She retired from Cannon Mills as a spinner.

She was preceded in death by her husband C.E. Bradshaw.

Survivors include sons Gary and Phillip Bradshaw, both of Salisbury, and Jeff Bradshaw, Concord; daughter Donna Wise, Concord; brother J.W. Grooms, Madison; sister Elizabeth Martin, Mooresville; 11 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Faith Covenant Church, conducted by the Rev. Jim Howard and the Rev. Joel Lentz. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. At other times the family will be at the home of daughter Donna Wise, 391 Knoll Court, Concord.

Ora Lambert Cribb

The funeral will be Thursday for Ora Lambert Cribb, 93, Salisbury, who died Monday (June 26, 2000)at her residence.

Born April 22, 1907, in Georgetown, S.C., Mrs. Cribb was a daughter of the late Callie Newberry and Daniel Lambert. He retired from the textile industry.

Survivors include sons Robert Lee Cribb, Shelby, Wesley Cribb, Norwood, and Robert P. Cribb, Asheboro; daughters Inez McKnight and Mary Robertson, both of Greensboro, Virginia Jones and Elizabeth Stewart, both of Hamlet, Patsy Kluttz, Salisbury, and Rosa Lee Jones and Lena Mae Pope, both of Rockingham; sisters Lina Altman, Mullins, S.C. and Mollie Williams, Myrtle Beach, S.C.; 38 grandchildren; 76 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Thursday, East Rockingham Congregational Holiness Church, conducted by the Rev. Kenneth Benoist and the Rev. Gerald Goins. Burial, Northam Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Marks Funeral Home, Rockingham.

Elizabeth ‘Peg’ Feamster

Elizabeth “Peg” Chunn Feamster, 66, 520 York Road, died Monday (June 26, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 6, 1933, in Davie County, Mrs. Feamster was a daughter of the late Mary Bell Carson. A graduate of Davie County High School and Lamay’s Beauty College in Winston-Salem, she was a member of Pearl White Chapter, Order of Eastern Star. Mrs. Feamster was a member of New Bethel Baptist Church, Mocksville, and served as a deaconess and on the pastor’s aid society.

Her husband, Harvey L. Feamster, died June 28, 1994.

Survivors include son Harvey L. “H.L.” Feamster, of the home; daughters Louise Hudson, Salisbury, and Roslyn Miller, Winston-Salem; brothers Richard Carson, Mocksville, James Henry Cowan, N.J., and Vance Baker, Charlotte; sisters Audrey Petteway, Waterbury, Conn., and Vella Baker, Charlotte; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Floyd ‘Bus’Goodnight Jr.

KANNAPOLIS — Floyd D. “Bus” Goodnight Jr., 83, Kannapolis, died Monday (June 26, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Born May 31, 1917, in Rowan County, he was a son of the late Floyd D. and Viola Wiley Goodnight. He was retired from Kannapolis City Water Works.

Survivors include wife Geneva Blume Goodnight; son Floyd David Goodnight III, Kannapolis; sisters Janie Goodnight, Kannapolis and Margaret Leatherman, Concord; brother James Harvey Goodnight, Virginia Beach, Va.; a grandson; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 4 p.m. Wednesday, Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Robert Forward.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

Visitation: 3:30-4 today at the mausoleum.

 

Pearl Lipe McCormac

CONCORD —

Born May 3, 1914, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late Ada Overcash and John Alexander Lipe. She retired from Karl’s Drugstore, Liverpool, N.Y.

her husband, Francis D. McCormac, died in 1989; a son, James David McCormac, died in 1997.

Survivors include sisters Nell Tedder, Grace Gregory and Pauline Westmoreland, all of Kannapolis, Mary Lou Johnson, Mooresville, and Faye Cook, Concord; brothers Floyd Lipe, Troutman, Homer Lipe, Kannapolis, and Ray Lipe, Morganton; four grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Mark White. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park, Kannapolis.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home.

Effie E. Mullis

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Effie Eller Plyler Mullis, 88, 1119 Bethpage Road, who died Monday (June 26, 2000) at Concord Nursing Center after two years of declining health and six months of serious illness.

Born Sept. 4, 1911, in Wilkes County, Mrs. Mullis was a daughter of the late Finley and Cora Beshears Eller. She retired from Cannon Mills plant 1, number 4 spinning room and was a member of Landis Baptist Church.

Mrs. Mullis was preceded in death by two husbands, R.C. “Bob”Plyler, who died in March 1981, and Julius Cicero “J.C.”Mullis, who died in August 1995. A son, Harold Browning, died in 1985.

Survivors include adopted daughter Carol D. Stapleton, Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Billy Honeycutt. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Dr.Woodrow Nichols Jr.

DURHAM — Dr. Woodrow Nichols Jr., 56, Durham, died Monday (June 26, 2000) at Duke Medical Center.

Born in Salisbury, he was a son of Delcenior Holt Nichols, Durham, formerly of Salisbury, and the late Woodrow W. Nichols.

He was a 1961 graduate of Price High School, Salisbury, and earned a bachelor’s degree from North Carolina Central University, a master’s degree in geography from Michigan Sate University, and a Ph.D. in geography from UCLA. He was a professor of geography at NCCU and served as department chair 1975 -1996. While at NCCU, he served on the athletic committee, faculty senate, and planning and budget committee.

His community involvement included chairing the Friends of Black Children Advisory Board, and the program committee of the James E. Shephard Sertoma Club. He was on the Citizens Committee on Transit and a special assistant for the Office of University Research, U.S. Department of Transportation, Washington, D.C.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Joy Nichols; daughters Zavier Nichols McCray, Charlotte, and Ekiti Nicol Nichols, Greensboro; sister Patricia Nichols Parrish, Durham; and two grandsons.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Friday, Farrison-Newton Communications Building Auditorium, NCCU. The body will be placed in the auditorium at 1 p.m.

Visitation: At the family home.

Scarborough and Hargett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Charles Richard Spry

Charles Richard Spry, 76, Salisbury, died Wednesday (June 29, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Rose Etta Stanley

TYRO —

Born Nov. 20, 1935, in Davidson County, she was a daughter of the late Grover and Bernice Hairston. A developmental technician retired from Caswell Center, Kinston, she received the a 22-year award for working with the mentally retarded. She was a member of First Missionary Baptist Church, Kinston.

Survivors include daughters Sherell Renay Stanley and Kendra Stanley Hoyte, both of Kinston; stepdaughter Doris “Dot” Graham, Kinston; brother Codell Hairston, Lexington; sister Carrie “Bootsie”Hairston, Lexington; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Buncombe Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randall B. Baldwin. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Thursday, at the church. At other times the family will be at 672 Hairston Road, Lexington.

Morrison-Studevent Funeral Home, Lexington, is in charge.

 

Virginia Payne Whitley

CHARLOTTE — Virginia Payne Whitley, 78, Charlotte, died Saturday (June 24, 2000) at Carolina Medical Center. She was the sister of Lucy Taylor, Kannapolis.

Services:Graveside, 2 today, Sharon Memorial Park.

McEwen Funeral Service is in charge.
