Lea Smith, 13, of Prison Camp Road, died Monday (June 26, 2000) at her residence, after
several months of illness.
Born Aug. 7, 1986, in Forsyth County, Ms. Smith was the
daughter of Tamara Freedle Fritz, of the home and Perry Smith, Mocksville. She was a
student at Mocksville Middle School and attended Heaven Bound Full Gospel Church.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include step-father
Albert Fritz, of the home; and sister Suzanne Welch, Mocksville.

Ora Lambert Cribb
Ora Lambert Cribb, 93, of Salisbury, died Monday (June 26,
2000) at her daughters residence, Patsy Kluttz, with whom she made her home.

Shirley Jean Ervin
CHINA GROVE Shirley Jean Ervin, 60, 2260 Cannon Farm
Road, died Sunday (June 25, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital Charlotte.
Born Feb. 9, 1940, in Cabarrus County, she was a daughter
of Robert Clifton Ervin, Mooresville and the late Mary Mable Rimmer Ervin. Educated in
Rowan County schools, she was the owner and operator of Landis Dairy Bar.
Survivors, in addition to her father, include brother Danny
Ervin, Mooresville; and sister Pat Kepley, China Grove.
Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home,
China Grove, conducted by the Rev. James Strickland. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.
Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home. At other

Ray Lee Grindstaff
MOORESVILLE Ray Lee Grindstaff,
56, of Clover Street, died Sunday (June 25, 2000).
Born March 1, 1944, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Grindstaff
was a son Vernie Gibson Medford, Canton, and the late Jack David Grindstaff. Prior to his
retirement, he was an automotive painter.
Mr. Grindstaff was preceded in death by a son, Ronnie
Grindstaff.
Survivors include wife Carolyn Hooks Grindstaff; sons Jeff
Grindstaff, Woodleaf, and Danny Grindstaff, Leland; brother Kenny Medford, Canton; sisters
Donna Jean Mitchell, Marion, and Brenda Burnette, Canton; and three grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. today, Cavin Funeral Home Chapel,
conducted by the Rev. Randall Macon. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Rachel Gilbert Hatley
ALBEMARLE Rachel Gilbert Hatley, 71, 17072 St.
Martin Road, died Monday (June 26, 2000) at Carolinas Medical Center.
Born Dec. 22, 1928, in Stanly County, Mrs. Hatley was a
daughter of the late Pearl Williams and George T. Gilbert. She attended Pfeiffer College
and was a homemaker.
Survivors include husband Joseph L. Hatley, of the home;
son Joseph H. Hatley Jr., Albemarle; daughter Deborah H. Holbrook, Charleston, S.C.;
brother Hoyle Gilbert, Charlotte; sister Margaret Tucker, Albemarle; and five
grandchildren.

CONCORD Maggie Hinson, 71,
10 Optimist Club Drive, died Monday (June 26, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center.
She was a care provider and was a member of Mount Olive
Baptist Church, Albemarle.
Survivors include son Bill Hinson, Concord; daughter June
Carol Cook, Concord; and four grandchildren.

Peggy Mitchell Holmes, 59, 120 Dove Meadow, died Saturday
(June 24, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, after two days of serious illness.

Infant Kiasha Lee Horton
Infant Kiasha Lee Horton, 403 W. Franklin St., Apt. 10,
died Sunday (June 25, 2000), at birth, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center,
Mooresville.
She was a daughter of Jessie Raciti and Rasheem Horton,
both of Salisbury.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include maternal
grandparents Fred and Rhonda Sullivan, both of Rockwell; paternal grandmother Elfreda
Williams, Salisbury; and paternal grandfather Wayne Horton, St. Croix, Virgin Islands.

Jessie Margaret Roques
Jessie Margaret Jones Roques, 84, of Pope, Mo., died Friday
(June 16, 2000) at her residence.
Born Aug. 27, 1915, in Salisbury, she was a daughter of the
late Pearl Wiley and Peyton Moore Jones. Educated in Salisbury schools and a graduate of
Boyden High School, she was a homemaker and had lived in Missouri for the past ten years.
Survivors include husband Ernest L. Roques; son William P.
Bill Agner, Salisbury; daughter Sue Safrit Schumaker, Olive Branch, Mo.;
sister Mary Jo Jones Bailey, Chesapeake, Va.; five grandchildren; and seven
great-grandchildren.
The funeral was held Friday (June 23, 2000) in Batesville,
Mo. Burial was in Forrest Memorial Park, Batesville, Mo.

Elsie Williams Shelton
The funeral will be Wednesday for Elsie Williams Shelton,
84, 209 W. Tenth St., who died Sunday (June 25, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center,
after a period of declining health.
Born April 24, 1916, Rockingham County, Mrs. Shelton was a
daughter of the late Hattie Shreves and John Lindsay Williams. Educated in Madison and
Mayodan schools, she was a member of Main Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include husband J.D. Shelton; sons J. Douglas
Shelton Jr., Granite Quarry; John L. Shelton, Statesboro, Ga. and H. Keith Shelton,
Bedford, Va.; and nine grandchildren.
Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Summersett Memorial Chapel,
conducted by the Rev. Ron Doub. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

George Y. Thomason Jr.
The funeral will be Thursday for George Y. Thomason Jr.,
87, 130 W. Ridge Road, who died Monday (June 26, 2000) at his residence, after two and a
half years of declining health.
Born Oct. 6, 1912, in Rowan County, Mr. Thomason was a son
of the late Pearl Bessent and George Y. Thomason. Educated in Rowan County schools, he was
a World War II veteran of the U.S. Air Force . He owned and operated Thomason Alignment
and was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Thomason was preceded in death by his wife Margie
Kluttz Thomason, who died April 11, 1995.
Survivors include brother Sam Thomason, Salisbury; Lucile
Lewis and Marguerite Bellone, both of Salisbury.
Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Franklin Presbyterian Church,
conducted by the Rev. Dr. Larry Summey, minister. Burial, church cemetery.

Elsie Mae Norris Watson
The funeral will be Wednesday for Elsie Mae Norris Watson,
72, of Salisbury, who died Sunday (June 25, 2000) at the Laurels of Salisbury, after a
brief illness.
Born Jan. 4, 1928, in Rowan County, Mrs. Watson was a
daughter of the late Blanche Moon and Percy Powell Norris. She graduated from Spencer High
School and was a homemaker. She was a member of Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Watson was preceded in death by her husband, Bobby
Wilson Watson, who died July 25, 1999.
Survivors include son Bobby Lee Watson, Mount Ulla;
daughter Cheryle W. Wietbrock, Salisbury; sister Myrtie N. Poplin, Charlotte; five
grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Brookhill Memorial
Gardens of Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Clarence E. Sifford, minister of Salem
Evangelical Lutheran Church.
