Grow old along with me!
The best is yet to be,
The last of life, for which the first was made.
Our times are in his hand.
Clifford Peeler recited this stirring Robert Browning poem
at a Salisbury Civitan Club banquet years ago, on the occasion of his and wife
Lillians wedding anniversary. It was a classic Clifford Peeler moment, and one that
showed what a classic he himself was.
Peeler, who died Friday at the age of 96, bespoke a
gentility and grace that few in this generation can match. He had a prodigious memory, a
kind heart and a keen business sense. Today the Cheerwine soft drink that his father
helped invent is still alive and bubbling, the leading product of a family-owned company
that continues to grow under the leadership of his grandsons.
Peeler took a conservative approach to business, expanding
Cheerwines territory slowly and from the perimeter. But the company remained stable
decade after decade, and it stayed in family hands. The soft drink has grown beyond being
a Salisbury staple and is now distributed well beyond.
Peeler was generous in his involvement in the community,
lending his judgment and expertise to Salisbury City Council, Catawba College, the Civitan
Club and other organizations and setting records along the way. But it was not just
longevity that brought Peeler rewards; he earned his kudos through steadfastness and
wisdom, character and humility.
As Catawba President Fred Corriher said, a giant tree has
fallen. Clifford Peeler helped shape much of what Salisbury has been and what it is today.
