China Grove planners to answer questions about annexation

BY JESSIE BURCHETTE
SALISBURY POST

CHINA GROVE — Residents in and around China Grove will get a chance to take a close look at areas under consideration for annexation.

A workshop and information session will be held at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday for residents to take a look and ask questions.

The annexation includes large areas south and north on U.S. 29, reaching from the Landis corporate limits at Bostian Road to Collins Road, just north of Bare Furniture Co.

This session is not the public hearing on annexation. That session, to be conducted by the Board of Aldermen, is several weeks away.

At this session, planners will answer questions from residents about whether they are in the proposed areas and about services to be offered.

Aldermen have not been invited to the session, but all department heads have.

Ron Smith, a planner with Benchmark Inc. of Kannapolis, will conduct the session at the Community Memorial Building on Myrtle Street.

Smith said he expects to provide brief remarks and general information. After that, residents can ask questions. Department heads will explain services such as police, fire, water and sewer.

Aldermen will make the ultimate decision on which portions of the six areas will be annexed before Sept. 1 .

The board previously adopted a resolution of intent to annex for all six areas, which total nearly 500 acres.

Much of the recent debate has focused on the cost of providing services and whether the town can afford that cost as it takes on other projects.

The town recently borrowed $3 million for a water line project and faces a major sewer project.

At one point, aldermen agreed to scale back the areas, taking in only those where the town already provides water and sewer services. But after considerable discussion, the board opted to go ahead with the annexation process on the six areas.

Landis officials recently said they would be willing to hold a joint meeting with the China Grove Board of Aldermen to see if an agreement can be reached on the territory around the towns.
