MOORESVILLE William Rogers Compton, 64, Wiggins
Road, died Friday (June 23, 2000)at his residence.
Born Aug. 22, 1935, in Iredell County, Mr. Compton was a
son of the late William Everett and Margaret MaggieCamilla Cook Compton.
Employed by Cascade Mills for 20 years, he spent another 16 years with the town of
Mooresville before retiring.
Survivors include wife Vivian Newton Compton; sons Craig
Compton, Mooresville, and Dale Compton, Cleveland; daughters Jan Ramsay and Pam Wright,
both of Mooresville; brother Jack Compton, Mooresville; sister Gaynell Hendren,
Kannapolis; 10 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

KANNAPOLIS
Born Sept. 13, 1912, in Chesterfield County, S.C., Mrs.
Gibson was a daughter of the late Cora Steen and Nathan Luke Gibson. She was educated in
the Chesterfield County schools.
She was employed with Cannon Mills No. 1s weave room
until her retirement. Amember of Kannapolis Church of God, she was active in the Queen
Esther Sunday School Class.
Mrs. Gibson was preceded in death by her husband, Dave C.
Gibson.
Survivors include son Carson Gibson, Kannapolis; daughter
Bobbie Gibson Ketner, Kannapolis; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one
step-great-grandchild.

KANNAPOLIS Charles Eugene Lil Gene
Hines III, 14, 159 Beaumont Ave., died Thursday (June 22, 2000) at Carolinas Medical
Center, Charlotte, after nine days of illness.
Born Aug. 14, 1985, in Winston-Salem, he was a son of
Charles Eugene Hines Jr., of the home, and Chiquita Hines Martin, Wilmington. A student at
A.L. Brown High School, he was in the marching band, the jazz band, the concert band, and
the drum line. An honor roll student, he played jayvee football.
He also took part in the community policing program. He was
a member of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, where he was active in the youth group and the
choir. He also belonged to the Boys and Girls Club of Wilmington.
Survivors, in addition to his parents, include sisters
Marquita and Monique Martin, both of Wilmington.
Services:4 p.m. Monday, Mount Calvary Lutheran Church,
conducted by the Rev. John E. Johnson. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation:6-8 p.m. Sunday, at the church. At other times

MOORESVILLE Lillian Pope Morris, 92, 225 E. McNeely
Ave., died Friday (June 23, 2000)at Genesis ElderCare.
Born July 25, 1907, in Iredell County, she was the daughter
of the late Elam H. and Sara Honeycutt Pope.
Her husband, William B. Morris, died in 1984, and a son,
William B. Morris Jr., died in 1971.
Survivors include daughter Betty M. Cannon, Mooresville;
brother Shirley Pope, Mooresville; sisters Rachel Jones, Charlotte, and Sara Long and
Maggie Deal, both of Mooresville; three grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three
great-great-grandchildren.

Boyce Bryant Parks, 76, Salisbury, died Friday (June 23,
2000) at Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Clifford A. Peeler
Clifford A. Peeler, Salisbury, died Friday (June 23,
2000)at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.
Born Oct. 14, 1903, in Rowan County, Mr. Peeler was a son
of the late Ellen Holshouser and Lewis D. Peeler. Educated in the Salisbury schools, he
earned a bachelors degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1924 and a masters degree in
business administration from Columbia University in 1925. He also received an honorary
doctorate of humanities from Catawba College.
Mr. Peeler served as president, board chairman and
treasurer of Carolina Beverage Corp. and Piedmont Cheerwine Bottling Co. He was
secretary-treasurer of the Yadkin Hotel from 1932 to 1978 and a First Union Bank director
from 1935 to1988.
He was a past president of the Salisbury-Rowan Chamber of
Commerce and the N.C. Bottlers Association. He served on the board of trustees for Catawba
College and was treasurer for many years. He received three Catawba College service
awards.
Mr. Peeler joined the Salisbury Civitan Club in April of
1925, which gave him the distinction of being a member longer than anyone else in Civitan
International. He was a former president of the local club and was a Civitan International
Fellow.
Active in Boy Scouting, he was a former Scoutmaster and
received the Silver Beaver Award. A city councilman for three terms, he also served as
mayor pro tem and mayor of Salisbury. He was also a former member of the Salisbury Board
of Education and served as its chairman.
Mr. Peeler was a lifelong member of St. Johns
Lutheran Church. He served on the Lutheran Church of America boards of American Missions
and Social Missions, the N.C. Lutheran Synod Finance Committee and the board of directors
of Lutheran Services for the Aging. He received the Silent Angel Award from St.
Johns.
He was a former Civitan Citizen of the Year, Industrial
Management Club Man of the Year and Lions Club Man of the Year.
His wife, Lillian Caldwell Peeler, died Feb. 8, 1991.
Survivors include son Larry Peeler, Salisbury; daughters
Nancy Peeler Keppel, Raleigh, Shirley Peeler Ritchie, Salisbury, and Becky Peeler Parsons,
Oakton, Va.; 10 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
Services:Memorial, 4 p.m. Monday, St. Johns Lutheran
Church, conducted by the Rev. John Tucker and the Rev. Jennifer Ginn. The eulogy will be
given by Fred Corriher Jr., president of Catawba College. A private graveside service will
be held at Chestnut Hill Cemetery prior to the service.
Visitation: After the memorial serve at the churchs
fellowship hall. At other times the family will be the home of daughter Shirley Peeler
Ritchie, 2526 Duke Circle. People may pay their respects Sunday afternoon and evening at
Summersett Funeral Home.

China Grove, died Friday (June 23, 2000) at The Meadows of Rockwell,
Born March 21, 1926, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of
the late Beulah Patterson and John Lee Bame. Retired from Iveys in Charlotte, she
was a member of First United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John Stegall.
Survivors include brothers John and Harry Bame, both of
China Grove.

John Louis Woods, 67, 151 Hawkins Loop, died Friday (June
23, 2000) at Brian Nursing Center after several weeks of serious illness.
Born March 23, 1933, in Cleveland, Mr. Woods was a son of
Anna Jane Hyde Woods, Salisbury, and the late Conyers Woods. Educated in the schools of
Rowan County, he had retired from the city of Salisbury. He attended St. Luke Baptist
Church.
Survivors include wife Lois Jean Robinson Woods; sons Terry
Louis Woods and Larry Jerome Woods, both of Salisbury, and Johnny Lee Woods, Greensboro;
daughters Betty Jean Hopkins, Columbia, S.C., and Vonda Delaine Woods, Salisbury; brothers
Charles C. Woods, Salisbury, and David Lee Woods, Kannapolis; sisters Vera Mae Hosch,
