Geneva Lawson Grant

THOMASVILLE — Geneva Lawson Grant, 90, 8052 E. Holly Grove Road, died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at her home.

Born Jan. 6, 1910, in Lenoir City, Tenn., Mrs. Grant was a daughter of the late Julian W. and Agnes McLeod Lawson. She grew up in Spencer.

Mrs. Grant was a 1926 graduate of Spencer High School and a 1930 graduate of Catawba College, Salisbury.

She began her teaching career at Pilot Elementary School, Davidson County. In 1946, she joined the Thomasville school system at Colonial Drive School, where she taught until her retirement. In Thomasville, she received the Teacher of the Year award.

A member of First Baptist Church of Thomasville, she was a former teacher of the Mary Matthews Philathea Class and a member of the Baptist Women and the Ladies Aid Society.

Mrs. Grant was a member of the Thomasville Woman’s Club and its Home Life Department. She was also active in the Retired Teachers’ Association. She volunteered at the information desk at Community General Hospital for a number of years.

Her first husband, Cann W. Kanoy, whom she married June 5, 1932, died Aug. 1, 1977.

Survivors include husband H. Clyde Grant, whom she married June 16, 1984; daughters Martha Jane Bennett, Greenville, and Pam Tapp, Laurinburg; sisters Virginia and Elizabeth Lawson, both of Salisbury; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. David Best. Burial, Rich Fork Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Melba Sink Grubb

LINWOOD — Melba Sink Grubb, 80, 3465 Sowers Road, died Tuesday (June 20, 2000) at Presbyterian Hospital, Charlotte.

Born Nov. 1, 1919, in Davidson County, Mrs. Grubb was a daughter of the late Bayard Franklin and Sadie Jane Craver Sink. A homemaker, she was a member of Reeds United Methodist Church and the Willing Workers Sunday School Class.

Survivors include husband Myles G. “Bill” Grubb, whom she married July 6, 1938; daughters Melba Loretta McCrary and Gayle G. Morgan; sisters Myra Williams, Jane Webb and Arvil Byerly, all of Lexington; brother Bayard Sink Jr., Lexington; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel, Lexington, conducted by the Rev. Jim Martin. Burial, Forest Hill Memorial Park, Lexington.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Sowers Road.

Harrison Foster Link

CHARLOTTE — The funeral will be Sunday for Harrison Foster Link, 84, Charlotte. He is the stepfather of John Ontko, Salisbury.

Services: Memorial, 4 p.m. Sunday, Briarcreek Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, conducted by Harold Casperson.

Robert Edward Manning

Robert Edward Manning, 79, 728 Klumac Road, died Thursday (June 22, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Nov. 24, 1920, in Walterboro, S.C., Mr. Manning was a son of the late Robert E. and Lillian Godwin Manning. Educated in the Salisbury schools, he graduated from the Citadel, Charleston, S.C., in 1942 with a degree in business administration.

A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he served with the 504th Parachute Regiment, 82nd Airborne Division. Wounded at the Battle of the Bulge on Feb. 2, 1945, Mr. Manning left the military as a captain in 1947.

He received the Purple Heart, a Presidential Unit Cititation, the Combat Infantry Badge, the Belgian Fourrapere de La Legion of Honor and the French Croix De Guerre.

Vice president and general manager of Nehi Beverage Co. Inc. of Salisbury from 1947 until he retired in 1982, he was a member of the North Carolina Bottler’s Association and the National Soft Drink Association.

He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the board of directors for Security Bank & Trust Co., and the board of directors of the Country Club of Salisbury, where he was a past president. He was a former member of the Civitan Club, the Chamber of Commerce and the N.C.Tar Heel Golf Association and its board of directors.

Survivors include wife Eleanor Holshouser Manning, whom he married Dec. 19, 1945; daughters Eleanor McArver, Morehead City, and Marlene Culbreth, Fairview; and four grandchildren.

Services: Memorials, 2 p.m. Saturday, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. John C. Southern Jr., pastor. The body will be cremated and the ashes planted in the church columbarium.

Visitation: After the memorial service in the church parish house.

John Calvin Owens

STANFIELD — John Calvin Owens, 51, 27011 Crepts Branch Road, died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at his home.

Born April 6, 1949, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Owens was a son of Mae Owens Casper, Salisbury, and the late Johnny Columbus Owens, and the stepson of Billy Casper, Salisbury.

He was a professional truck driver with Jevic Transportation and a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Survivors, in addition to his mother and stepfather, include wife E. Helen Owens; son John Christopher Owens, Reidsville; stepsons Randy Miller, Lincolnton, and David Miller, Midland; stepdaughter Teresa Miller Carr, Lincolnton; brothers Michael Owens, Yadkinville, and Charles Owens, Locust; sister Ruth Owens Dieth, China Grove; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, Full Gospel Mission Church, conducted by the Rev. Mitchell D. Cook and the Rev. Len Maske. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory. Military rites by Albemarle-Stanly County DAV.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the home on Crepts Branch Road.

Clifford A. Peeler

Clifford A. Peeler, Salisbury, died Friday (June 23, 2000) at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Mary M. Shepherd

The funeral will be Saturday for Mary Liza Misenheimer Smith, 80, Salisbury, who died Thursday (June 22, 2000) at her home after a period of declining health.

Born Oct. 6, 1919, in Rowan County, Mrs. Shepherd was a daughter of the late James and Gurdy Mae Fry Misenheimer. She was educated in the Rowan County schools. A homemaker, she was a member of Trading Ford Baptist Church and the Fidelis Sunday School Class.

Her husband, Dolph Columbus Shepherd, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Cordell James Shepherd, Greensboro, snd Dolph Lee and Charlie Thomas Shepherd, both of Salisbury; daughter Mary Ann Oakley, Salisbury; sisters Dot Curlee, Salisbury, and Essie Tanner, Spencer; eight grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Trading Ford Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Mike Motley. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Burial, family plot in church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home.

Brianne Wallace Stamey

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Monday for Brianne Danille Wallace Stamey, 20, 304 Spring Garden Ave., who died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Nov. 4, 1979, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Stamey was a daughter of James Derek Wallace and Tammy Stamey Wallace, Kannapolis. She was educated at South Rowan High School.

She was a former member of the International Order of Rainbow-Kannapolis Assembly. A member of Bethpage United Methodist Church, she was active with the youth program.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include brother Christopher Jason Stamey, Kannapolis; maternal grandparents Robert and Nancy Stamey, Kannapolis; maternal great-grandfather Grayson O. Stamey, Kannapolis; and paternal grandparents C.W. and Virginia Wallace, Kannapolis.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, Bethpage United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6-9 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of grandparents Robert and Nancy Stamey, 2113 W. C. St.

Floyd Wilkins

Floyd Wilkins, 99, 318 E. Horah St., died Thursday (June 22, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.
