Clifford Peeler dies at 96

SALISBURY POST

Former Salisbury Mayor Clifford A. Peeler of Trinity Oaks, a key figure in Salisbury for nearly a century, died this morning at 6:40 at the Lutheran Nursing Home after a brief illness. He was 96.

Peeler played an influential part in city government, led the growth of Cheerwine Bottling Co. and was a major influence in the life of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Catawba College, local schools and the Civitan Club.

A memorial service will take place Monday at 4 p.m. at St. John’s, conducted by associate pastors the Rev. John Tucker and the Rev. Jennifer Ginn. Catawba President Fred Corriher will deliver the eulogy. Visitation will follow in the fellowship hall.

A private service and burial will take place earlier Monday at Chestnut Hill Cemetery. People may pay their respects at Summersett Funeral Home from Saturday until noon Monday.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Catawba College, N.C. Lutheran Services for the Aging, Salisbury Civitan Club’s Charitable Foundation or the donor’s choice.
