Former Salisbury Mayor Clifford A. Peeler of Trinity Oaks, a key figure in Salisbury for
nearly a century, died this morning at 6:40 at the Lutheran Nursing Home after a brief
illness. He was 96.Peeler played an influential part
in city government, led the growth of Cheerwine Bottling Co. and was a major influence in
the life of St. Johns Lutheran Church, Catawba College, local schools and the
Civitan Club.
A memorial service will take place Monday at 4 p.m. at St.
Johns, conducted by associate pastors the Rev. John Tucker and the Rev. Jennifer
Ginn. Catawba President Fred Corriher will deliver the eulogy. Visitation will follow in
the fellowship hall.
A private service and burial will take place earlier Monday
at Chestnut Hill Cemetery. People may pay their respects at Summersett Funeral Home from
Saturday until noon Monday.
