Roxie Brown Barbee

ALBEMARLE — Roxie Marie Brown Barbee, 77, 1311 Lowder St., died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at her home.

Born Nov. 21, 1922, in Yadkin County, Mrs. Barbee was a daughter of the late Marion Alonzo and Stella Taylor Brown. A former seamstress at Allison Manufacturing Co., she was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Smithtown.

Her husband, James Alford Barbee, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons Frank and Ron Barbee, both of Albemarle; brother Nuel Brown, East Bend; sisters Posie Brown, Lorene Brown and Johnsie Thompson, all of Winston-Salem; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; and a step-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Hartsell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Rob Roberts. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Lowder Street.

Charles Glenn Calkins

LANDIS — Charles Glenn Calkins, 75, 804 Kimmons St., died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at the Hefner VA Medical Center, Salisbury.

Born Dec. 17, 1924, in Toledo, Ohio, Mr. Calkins was a son of the late Charles Glenn and Juanita McCuthson Calkins. He was a graduate of Sylvania High School and the University of Toledo’s School of Architecture.

A self-employed contractor, he had also worked with Boeing International. A veteran of the U.S. Navy and the U.S. Coast Guard, he was one of five survivors of the USS Rhodes, which was sunk in the South Pacific during World War II.

His wife, Mary Ruth Calkins, died Nov. 11, 1998.

Survivors include sons Michael Calkins, Pennsylvania, and Charles Glenn Calkins Jr., Landis; daughters Cheryl Henderson, Seattle, Wash., Jennifer Lynn, Houston, Texas, and Cindy Anthony, Kannapolis; stepson James Frosch, Texas; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Friday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, conducted by the Rev. Billy Honeycutt. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: Noon-1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

Annie Mae Branson Cohen

MOCKSVILLE —Annie Mae Branson Cohen, 87, Liberty Church Road, died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at her home.

Born May 22, 1913, in Davie County, Mrs. Cohen was a daughter of the late Kelly and Sallie Bailey Branson. She was a graduate of Cooleemee High School.

She had retired after 15 years at Fran-Ray Rest Home. She attended Elbaville and Chestnut Grove United Methodist churches.

Her husband, William Offord Cohen, died in 1979.

Survivors include sons Teddy Farrell Cohen and William Offord Cohen Jr., both of Newport News, Va., Juan Cohen, Advance, Larry Cohen, Cleveland, and LaVerne Cohen, Mocksville; daughters Nancy Joan C. White and Daphne C. Brown, both of Mocksville; sister Edna B. Eaton, Marietta, Ga.; 15 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Saturday, Eaton Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Tim Starbuck. Burial, Elbaville United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

 

Granval Daniel

KANNAPOLIS — Granval Daniel, 86, 2506 Joyce St., died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at Concord Nursing Center after six months of declining health and three weeks of serious illness.

Born March 1, 1914, in Madison County, Ga., Mr. Daniel was a son of the late Toombs R. and Delree Carrithers Daniel. He had retired from the bleachery at Cannon Mills, Plant 1. He served in the U.S. Marines during World War II.

Survivors include wife Myrtice Holshouser Daniel; daughters Daphne D. Coe and Barbara D. Morgan, both of Kannapolis, and Julie Daniel, Raleigh; son Jerry Daniel, Kannapolis; sisters Kathleen Daniel, Lucille Allen, Hazel Reynolds and Jewel Campbell, all of Kannapolis, and Ruth Fortson, China Grove; brothers Mauldin and William Daniel, both of Kannapolis, and Jay Walter Daniel, Springhill, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Friday, Carolina Memorial Park, conducted by the Rev. Coy C. Privette.

Visitation: None.

Paul William Donnelly

Paul William Donnelly, 94, Salisbury, died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Donald ‘Don’ Forrest

LEXINGTON — Donald Allen “Don” Forrest, 58, Highway 150 North, died Monday (June 19, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Jan. 26, 1942, in Forsyth County, Mr. Forrest was a son of the late Abram A. and Gladys Hege Forrest. Employed by Baker Furniture in Mocksville, he was a member of Christian Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Brenda Hanes Forrest, whom he married June 23, 1962; son Keith Allen Forrest, Lexington; brother Jessie “Ray” Forrest, Lexington; sister Janice Jenkins, Lexington; and a granddaughter.

Services: 2 p.m. today, Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Samuel Harvey. Burial, Shiloh United Methodist Church cemetery.

The family will be at the home of his son at 522 Riverwood Road.

 

James Richardson Gaither

WOODLEAF — James Richard Gaither, Foster Road, died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at his home.

Eaton Funeral Home, Mocksville, is in charge.

 

Bradley Charles King

WELCOME — Bradley Charles King, 46, Welcome, died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born Feb. 13, 1954, in Davidson County, Mr. King was a son of Frances Jordan King James of Lexington and the late John Wesley King Jr. He was the stepson of Chester “C.J.” James of Lexington. He was employed with Twin City Warehouse.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Piedmont Funeral Home Chapel, Lexington, conducted by Dr. Stephen Martin. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of his mother and stepfather at 1375 Old Mill Farm Road, Lexington.

Nellie Baker London

HARRISBURG — Nellie Baker London, 78, Harrisburg, died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at her home.

Born Dec. 21, 1921, in Surry County, Mrs. London was a daughter of the late George Paxton and Verlie Mae Stanly Baker. She made cakes and pies that she sold and gave away.

Her husband, John C. London Jr., died March 29, 1990.

Survivors include daughter Violet VanSchuyver, of the home; sisters Irene Moore, Faith, Verlie Hunsucker, Rockwell, and Polly Tate, Flint, Mich.; brothers Jimmy Baker, Kannapolis, and George Baker, Harrisburg; and one grandson.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, Lady’s Funeral Home Chapel, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Rick Hofferth and the Rev. Charles Efird. Burial, Harrisburg Cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home in Harrisburg.

Lucy Rowland Rogers

KANNAPOLIS — Lucy Rowland Rogers, 81, 112 York Ave., died Tuesday (June 20, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Nov. 2, 1918, in Madison County, Ga., Mrs. Rogers was a daughter of the late Henry and Elizabeth Carey Rowland. A member of Bethpage United Methodist Church, she had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1.

Her husband, G.E. Rogers, died Oct. 22, 1992. She was also preceded in death by a son, Hugh Kenneth Rogers; and a daughter, Joyce Rogers Ritchie.

Survivors include son Jerry Rogers, Kannapolis; sister Hazel Lowe, Landis; brother Dorsey Rowland, Kannapolis; five grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Randy Foster and the Rev. Coy Privette. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on York Avenue.

Lester Smith

Lester Smith, 87, 1201 Davis St., died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at Brian Center Nursing and Rehabilitation.

Born April 10, 1913, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Jake Washington and Sarah Ann Swisher Smith. He was a former card hand at Johnson Mills. He attended West Park Baptist Church in Rockwell.

A son, Lester Smith Jr., preceded him in death.

Survivors include daughter Rosa Ann Pressley, Lake Wylie, S.C.; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Friday, West Park Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles Carver. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Concord. At other times the family will be at the home of grandson Jeffery Smith, 1201 Davis St., with whom he made his home.

Mary Steele Snetter

The funeral will be Saturday for Mary Steele Snetter, 64, 515 S. Shaver St., who died Tuesday (June 6, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Services: Noon Saturday, First Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Stephen A. G. Howard. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 8 p.m.-midnight Friday at the church.

Elizabeth G. St. John

KANNAPOLIS — A. Elizabeth Gulledge St. John, 63, 600 Pleasant Ave., died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at the home of her daughters. She had been in declining health for a year and seriously ill for two months.

Born Feb. 8, 1937, in Chesterfield County, S.C., she was a daughter of the late Harley and Rosella Boatwright Gulledge. She had been employed with Rowan County as a certified nursing assistant in the CAP Care Program for the past decade.

A daughter, Teresa St. John Bostian, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Sharan St. John, Granite Falls, Cynthia Boger, Davidson, and Shelia Jordan and Tammy “Jamie” St. John, with whom she made her home in Kannapolis; sister Ellen Head, Kannapolis; brother Bobby Gulledge, Van Cleave, Miss.; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Westside Church of the Nazarene, conducted by the Rev. Roger Lunsford, pastor, China Grove Church of God. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Friday, Lady’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home of her daughters at 600 Pleasant Ave.

 

Brianne Wallace Stamey

KANNAPOLIS — Brianne Danille Wallace Stamey, 20, 304 Spring Garden Ave., died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

MacAlister Culver Sterling

MacAlister Culver Sterling, 82, Salisbury, died Wednesday (June 21, 2000) at the Hefner VA Medical Center.

Born Oct. 26, 1917, in Bellerose, Long Island, N.Y., Mr. Sterling was a son of the late Delbert and Estere Truesdale Sterling. He was educated in the Bellerose schools.

He was a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force when he retired in 1963 after 27 years in the military. He was later employed as a security guard with Purolator Armored Car Co., Tampa, Fla.

He was a member of the American Bowling Congress and St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Tampa.

His wife, Ethel Szollosi Sterling, died April 18, 1980.

Survivors include son Delbert Sterling, Salisbury; and a granddaughter.

Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Garden of Memory Chapel, Tampa, Fla. Burial, Garden of Memory, Tampa, Fla. Military graveside rites by MacDill Air Force Base Honor Guard.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home.
