Grady William Corbin

FRANKLIN — Grady William Corbin, 67, Forest Avenue, brother of Mae Keeter of Salisbury, died Monday (June 12, 2000) in an Asheville hospital.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Holly Springs Baptist Church. Burial, church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30. Military rites by VFW Post 7339, American Legion Post 108 and the Rev. Judson Hall.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Macon Funeral Home.

Helen Shook Hoffner

MOUNT ULLA — Mary Helen Shook Hoffner, 69, Mount Ulla, died Monday (June 19, 2000) at her home after a period of declining health.

Born Sept. 17, 1930, in Rowan County, Mrs. Hoffner was a daughter of the late J.C. and Mearl Goodman Shook. She was a graduate of Granite Quarry High School.

She had retired in 1996 from Food Lion’s cash management department. She had earlier been an assistant vice president with Citizens Savings Bank for 15 years.

A lifelong member of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, she taught a children’s Sunday school class and had been a member of the choir since she was a teen-ager. She was also a former Luther League officer, president and treasurer of the Laura Huffman Group of WELCA, an Altar Guild member and chairman of the Worship and Music Committee until last year.

A son, Larry Joe Hoffner, preceded her in death.

Survivors include husband Carl Luther Hoffner, whom she married July 4, 1948; sons Carl L. Hoffner Jr., Salisbury, and Timothy C. Hoffner; brother Grover A. Shook, Charlotte; sister Martha Nell Shook Caldwell, Harrison, Tenn.; and two grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, St. Luke’s Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Milbert Kurtz, pastor, and the Rev. Carroll Robinson, pastor, Lebanon Lutheran Church. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Lyerly Funeral Home, Salisbury. At other times the family will be at the home in Mount Ulla.

Marion Chivers Kimrey

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Wednesday for Marion Chivers Kimrey, 81, 1210 Berkshire Drive, who died Sunday (June 18, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born March 10, 1919, in England, Mrs. Kimrey was the daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Sutton Chivers. She was educated in England.

A member of Coltrane Life Center, Concord, she attended Central United Methodist Church, Concord.

Her husband, John David Kimrey, died April 20, 1997.

Survivors include sons John David Kimrey Jr., Seattle, Wash., Tyrone M. Kimrey, Marshville, and James L. Kimrey, Harrisburg; daughter Susan K. Bennett, Kannapolis; brother Bill Chivers, Wales; sisters Ivy Harrison, Lynn Woodward, Rose Tunkin and Betty Breakspear, all of Wales; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, conducted by the Rev. Ray Franklin. Burial, National Cemetery, Salisbury.

Visitation: None.

Leonie Stoessel Smith

Leonie Nureldin Stoessel Smith, Salisbury, died Monday (June 19, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Lizzie Ingram Luther

The funeral will be Thursday for Lizzie Virginia Ingram Luther, 90, 410 W. Franklin St., who died Saturday (June 17, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born April 8, 1910, in Anson County, Mrs. Luther was a daughter of the late Charles Allen and Letha Ingram. She was educated in the Lilesville schools.

A homemaker, she was a member of Southern City AME Zion Church and its Spiritual Chorus.

Her husband, Charlie Luther Jr., died Oct. 14, 1970.

Survivors include sons James and Jimmie Luther, both of Salisbury; daughters Doris Luther, of the home, and Luvenia Moore and Katie Robinson, both of Salisbury; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Southern City AME Zion Church, conducted by Dr. Donald C. Holness. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Thursday at the church.

Rowan Funeral Service is in charge.

 

Hubert Miller

The funeral will be Thursday for Hubert Miller, 60, 812 Old Concord Road, who died Sunday (June 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

His companion, Joann Jones, of the home, was omitted from the survivors listed previously.

Services: 2 p.m. Thursday, Sills Creek AME Zion Church, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. Michael McCray. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Richard Lloyd Peeler

Richard Lloyd “Hot Rod” Peeler, 53, Salisbury, died Sunday (June 18, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Born Dec. 16, 1946, in Rowan County, Mr. Peeler was a son of the late John L. and Sadie Benson Peeler. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.

He was employed with J. Van Hanford Greenhouses for more than 35 years.

Survivors include brother John L. Peeler Jr., Paxton, Ill.

Services: Graveside, 3 p.m. Wednesday, City Memorial Park, conducted by Dr. Rick Cockerham, pastor, Calvary Baptist Church.

Visitation: 1:45-2:45 p.m. Wednesday, Lyerly Funeral Home.

 

Maryetta Henry Purcell

Graveside services will be held Wednesday for Maryetta Henry Purcell, a former Salisbury resident.

Born Feb. 27, 1917, in Clinton, S.C., Mrs. Purcell was a daughter of the late John Clemson and Ola Young Henry. She graduated in 1938 from Furman University, where she studied music.

She taught private lessons in Greenville, S.C. until her marriage in 1949, when she moved to Salisbury.

In Salisbury, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church and the Amicitia Book Club. She had lived at The Pines in Davidson since 1989.

Survivors include her husband, David Craig Purcell, and brother John Clemson Henry.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Wednesday, Clinton Presbyterian Church cemetery, Clinton, S.C., conducted by Dr. James Howell.

Sue Jordan Roberts

KANNAPOLIS — Sue Aldridge Jordan Roberts, 2016 Bunker Court, died Monday (June 19, 2000).

Margaret Osborne Smith

ALBEMARLE — Margaret Adaleade Osborne Smith, 86, 1930 Woodhaven Court, died Monday (June 19, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Dec. 9, 1913, in Anson County, Mrs. Smith was a graduate of the Wadesboro schools. She was a homemaker and a member of Badin Baptist Church, Badin.

Her husband, Charles Smith, preceded her in death.

Survivors include sister Alice Burch, Wadesboro.

Services: 11 a.m. Thursday, Badin Baptist Church, Badin, conducted by the Rev. Dan Abernathy. Burial, Fairview Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Wednesday, Hartsell Funeral Home.

 

James Everett Whitley

The funeral will be Wednesday for James Everett Whitley, 72, Salisbury, who died Sunday (June 18, 2000) at his home.

Born Nov. 19, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Whitley was a son of the late James William and Roxie Eagle Whitley. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.

Retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service, he later worked at Fiber Industries, now KoSa. He was a former member of Coburn Memorial United Methodist Church.

Survivors include brothers Jasper Leroy Whitley, Salisbury, and Johnny Calvin Whitley, Concord; and sister Cathleen Hutchinson, Salisbury.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Wednesday, Rowan Memorial Park, conducted by a VA chaplain. Military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: At the cemetery after the service.

Peggy Russell Yost

Peggy Russell Yost, 72, Salisbury, died Tuesday (June 20, 2000) at her home.

Addie Owens Cross

LEXINGTON — Addie Mae Owens Cross, 86, 1309 Wafford Circle, died Sunday (June 18, 2000) at Lexington Memorial Hospital.

Born Feb. 12, 1914, in Davidson County, Mrs. Cross was a daughter of the late James Cleveland and Annie Beck Owens. She was a retired textile worker and a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church.

Her husband, Lester “Bud” Cross, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Linda Cross Randolph and Lou Cross Spry, both of Southmont; son Steve Cross, Southmont; sisters Essie Hughes, High Point, Audrey Owens, Winston-Salem, Louise Everhart, Welcome, and Betty Boldue, Florida; brothers Billy Owens, Lexington, and Jerry Owens, Southmont; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Macedonia United Methodist Church, Southmont, conducted by the Rev. Randy Tingle. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 6:30-8:30 tonight, Piedmont Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Wafford Circle.
