Helen Shook Hoffner
MOUNT ULLA Mary Helen Shook Hoffner, 69, Mount Ulla,
died Monday (June 19, 2000) at her home after a period of declining health.
Born Sept. 17, 1930, in Rowan County, Mrs. Hoffner was a
daughter of the late J.C. and Mearl Goodman Shook. She was a graduate of Granite Quarry
High School.
She had retired in 1996 from Food Lions cash
management department. She had earlier been an assistant vice president with Citizens
Savings Bank for 15 years.
A lifelong member of St. Lukes Lutheran Church, she
taught a childrens Sunday school class and had been a member of the choir since she
was a teen-ager. She was also a former Luther League officer, president and treasurer of
the Laura Huffman Group of WELCA, an Altar Guild member and chairman of the Worship and
Music Committee until last year.
A son, Larry Joe Hoffner, preceded her in death.
Survivors include husband Carl Luther Hoffner, whom she
married July 4, 1948; sons Carl L. Hoffner Jr., Salisbury, and Timothy C. Hoffner; brother
Grover A. Shook, Charlotte; sister Martha Nell Shook Caldwell, Harrison, Tenn.; and two
grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, St. Lukes Lutheran
Church, conducted by the Rev. Milbert Kurtz, pastor, and the Rev. Carroll Robinson,
pastor, Lebanon Lutheran Church. Burial, church cemetery.

KANNAPOLIS The funeral will be Wednesday for Marion
Chivers Kimrey, 81, 1210 Berkshire Drive, who died Sunday (June 18, 2000) at NorthEast
Medical Center, Concord.
Born March 10, 1919, in England, Mrs. Kimrey was the
daughter of the late Thomas and Elizabeth Sutton Chivers. She was educated in England.
A member of Coltrane Life Center, Concord, she attended
Central United Methodist Church, Concord.
Her husband, John David Kimrey, died April 20, 1997.
Survivors include sons John David Kimrey Jr., Seattle,
Wash., Tyrone M. Kimrey, Marshville, and James L. Kimrey, Harrisburg; daughter Susan K.
Bennett, Kannapolis; brother Bill Chivers, Wales; sisters Ivy Harrison, Lynn Woodward,
Rose Tunkin and Betty Breakspear, all of Wales; five grandchildren; and three
great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be Thursday for Lizzie Virginia Ingram
Luther, 90, 410 W. Franklin St., who died Saturday (June 17, 2000) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center.
Born April 8, 1910, in Anson County, Mrs. Luther was a
daughter of the late Charles Allen and Letha Ingram. She was educated in the Lilesville
schools.
A homemaker, she was a member of Southern City AME Zion
Church and its Spiritual Chorus.
Her husband, Charlie Luther Jr., died Oct. 14, 1970.
Survivors include sons James and Jimmie Luther, both of
Salisbury; daughters Doris Luther, of the home, and Luvenia Moore and Katie Robinson, both
of Salisbury; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Richard Lloyd Hot Rod Peeler, 53, Salisbury,

Born Dec. 16, 1946, in Rowan County, Mr. Peeler was a son
of the late John L. and Sadie Benson Peeler. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.
He was employed with J. Van Hanford Greenhouses for more
than 35 years.

Maryetta Henry Purcell

Henry Purcell, a former Salisbury resident.
Born Feb. 27, 1917, in Clinton, S.C., Mrs. Purcell was a
daughter of the late John Clemson and Ola Young Henry. She graduated in 1938 from Furman
University, where she studied music.
She taught private lessons in Greenville, S.C. until her
marriage in 1949, when she moved to Salisbury.
In Salisbury, she was a member of First Presbyterian Church
and the Amicitia Book Club. She had lived at The Pines in Davidson since 1989.
Survivors include her husband, David Craig Purcell, and
brother John Clemson Henry.

James Everett Whitley
The funeral will be Wednesday for James Everett Whitley,
72, Salisbury, who died Sunday (June 18, 2000) at his home.
Born Nov. 19, 1927, in Rowan County, Mr. Whitley was a son
of the late James William and Roxie Eagle Whitley. He was educated in the Rowan County
schools.
Retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years of service, he
later worked at Fiber Industries, now KoSa. He was a former member of Coburn Memorial
United Methodist Church.
Survivors include brothers Jasper Leroy Whitley, Salisbury,
and Johnny Calvin Whitley, Concord; and sister Cathleen Hutchinson, Salisbury.

daughter of the late James Cleveland and Annie Beck Owens. She was a retired textile
worker and a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church.
Her husband, Lester Bud Cross, preceded her in
