Marvin Dennis Biles

ALBEMARLE — Marvin Dennis Biles, 75, 1930 Woodhaven Court, died Friday (June 16, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Feb. 26, 1925, in Stanly County, Mr. Biles was a son of the late Hurley Dennis and Dora Mae Surratt Biles. Retired from IBM, he was a member of South Albemarle Baptist Church.

Mr. Biles was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Marines, receiving a Purple Heart for his service in Okinawa and Guadalcanal.

His wife, Clara Almond Biles, died June 28, 1999.

Survivors include sons the Rev. Tony A. Biles, Concord, and Marvin Dennis Biles Jr., Rochester, Minn.; daughter Sonja Biles Simmons, Hilton Head Island, S.C.; and nine grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Stanly Memorial Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Ron Aldridge. Burial, Stanly Gardens of Memory, full military rites by U.S. Marine Corps.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Monday, at the funeral home.

Freddie Worn Blackwell

GOLDSBORO — Freddie Worn Blackwell, 49, Goldsboro, died Sunday (June 11, 2000) at his home.

Funeral services will be held at a later date.

Shumate-Faulk Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Herman Chambers

KANNAPOLIS — Herman Alexander Chambers, 96, 2200 Centergrove Road, died Friday (June 16, 2000) at Five Oaks Nursing Center.

Lady’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Lillie Lee ‘L.E.’ Cockerl

Lillie Lee “L.E.” Cockerl, Hempstead, N.Y., a Granite Quarry native, died June 9, 2000.

Born Jan. 31, 1924, Mrs. Cockerl was a daughter of the late Therman and Elizabeth Corpening. A homemaker, she was educated at Granite Quarry High School.

Survivors include her husband of 58 years, Robert Cockerl, whom she married Oct. 16, 1942; sons Robert Cockerl Jr. and Avery Cockerl, both of Salisbury; daughter Andrea Cockerl, East Meadow, N.Y.; brothers George Corpening, Salisbury, Robert Corpening, Albemarle, and Dock and James Corpening, both of Granite Quarry; sisters Jennie Reade, St. Louis, Mo., Anne Corpening, Brooklyn, N.Y., and Betty Hill, Simpsonville, S.C.; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held June 13 at Carl C. Burnett Funeral Home, Hempstead, N.Y. Burial was in Hempstead, N.Y.

 

Russell G. Cooper

LEXINGTON — Russell Greer Cooper, 86, 2560 Yates Road, Denton, formerly of Lexington, died Thursday (June 15, 2000) at Salem Rehabilitation Health Care after 10 years of declining health.

Born Feb. 28, 1914, in Randolph County, Mr. Cooper was a son of the late Russell and Martha Tesh Cooper. Retired as a supervisor at Hekman Furniture, he was a member of Sheets Memorial Baptist Church.

His wife, Mary Byers Cooper, preceded him in death.

Survivors include son Russell G. Cooper Jr., Denton; sister Avery Hedrick, Lexington; brother Eugene Cooper, Linwood; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. today, Davidson Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Frankie Matthews. Burial, Lexington City Cemetery.

Visitation: 1:30-2:30 today at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on Yates Road.

 

Lonnie James Myers

Lonnie James Myers, who died June 2, 2000, had a stepson, Delton Motley, and two grandchildren, from Mount Pleasant, who were omitted from his obituary earlier this month.

 

Diane Krashner Crabtree

ALBEMARLE — Diane Krashner Crabtree, 51, 714 Prospect Church Road, died Thursday (June 15, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Mrs. Crabtree was born July 14, 1948, in New Castle, Pa. She was a daughter of Mildred McSwain Krashner, New Castle, Pa., and the late Walter Krashner.

A member of Christ Episcopal Church, she was employed by H&R Block Tax Service.

Her husband, Michael Wayne Crabtree, died June 11, 2000.

Survivors include son Scott Crabtree, Woodbridge, Va.; daughter Deborah Krashner, Clover, S.C.; and brother Douglas Krashner, Clover, S.C.

Services: Memorial, 1 p.m. Tuesday, Christ Episcopal Church, conducted by Father Allan Belton. Inurnment, church gardens.

Visitation: 12:30-1 p.m. Tuesday at the parish house.

Regina Gaiher Head

MOCKSVILLE — Regina Gaiher Head, 38, Grubb Road, died Friday (Jen 16, 2000) at Davie County Hospital.

Eaton Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Eleanor Sommer Klein

The funeral will be Monday for Eleanor Sommer Klein, 92, who died Thursday (June 15, 2000) at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Born Sept. 1, 1907, in Chicago, Mrs. Klein was a daughter of the late Gustave Adolph and Frieda Franzek Sommer. She was a homemaker.

A member of Milford Hills United Methodist Church, she was a member of Circle No. 2 and a Sunday school teacher. Over the years, she did volunteer work with the Girl Scouts, the Red Cross and Forsyth Memorial Hospital in Winston-Salem.

Her husband, Oscar Herbert Klein, died April 26, 1993.

Survivors include daughters Joan K. Ennis, Salisbury, Mitzi K. Gray, Garner, and Susan K. Kilmon, Royal Oak, Md.; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: Memorial, 2 p.m. Monday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Neill Shaw, pastor, Milford Hills United Methodist Church.

Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Memorials: Milford Hills United Methodist Church, 1630 Statesville Blvd., Salisbury, N.C. 28144; or donor’s choice.

Nina Mowery Penley

Nina Mowery Penley, 84, Salisbury, died Friday (June 16, 2000) at her home after being seriously ill for two weeks.

Born Dec. 9, 1915, in Rowan County, Mrs. Penley was a daughter of the late Hettie Yoder and William E. Mowery. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she graduated from Spencer High School.

She had been employed with Parrish Bakery and the Laguna Co., later retiring from the Gerber Co. She was a member of Franklin Presbyterian Church, where she was active in the Friendly Bible Class. She also participated in activities at Rufty-Holmes Senior Center.

Her husband, Charlie Lee Penley, died April 3, 1973.

Survivors include sons Carol W. Penley, of the home, and Robert L. Penley, Hillsborough; daughter Nyoka Freeze, Salisbury; brothers Dan, Charles and Ralph Mowery, all of Salisbury; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Sunday, Franklin Presbyterian Church. The body will be taken to the church at 3:30.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Memorials: Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice, 825-A W. Henderson St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.

 

Charles Clayton Poole

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Charles Clayton Poole, 81, a native of Salisbury, N.C., died Thursday (June 15, 2000) at his home.

A veteran of the U.S. Army, he was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He had retired as owner/operator of C. Poole Signs.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years, Helen W. Poole; son Charles C. Poole Jr., Charlotte, N.C.; and sister Margaret Daniel of Austin, Texas.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Trinity Lutheran Church. Burial, Jacksonville Memory Gardens.

Visitation: 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Hardage-Giddens Funeral Home.

Sally Oakley Scercy

KANNAPOLIS —Sally Maie Nancy Oakley Scercy, died Friday (June 16, 2000) at her daughter’s home in Salisbury.

Born June 1, 1924, in Wilkes County, she was a daughter of the late Gaston Garfield and Adelaide Curry Oakley. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church, Enochville, where she was active in the Jewel Club.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jerry Wayne Scercy.

Survivors include her husband of 57 years, Kenneth Scercy; son Ken Scercy, Trophy Club, Texas; daughter Pat Gantt, Salisbury; and eight grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Tom Honeycutt. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of her son at 4810 Finch St.

Memorials: Rowan Regional Home Health and Hospice, 118 E. Council St., Salisbury, N.C. 28144.
