Cordell N. Athey
Cordell N. Athey, 85, 415 Pine Hill Road, died Thursday (June 15, 2000) at his home after a lengthy illness.
Born March 14, 1915, in Rowan County, Mr. Athey was a son of the late Frank Isaac and Bertie Elizabeth Marlin Athey. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he served in the U.S. Navy during World War II.
A member of Gay’s Chapel United Methodist Church, he had retired in 1977 after 25 years with Salisbury’s Water and Sewer Department. He had earlier worked for Southern Railway.
His first wife, Dorothy Kimball Athey, died June 21, 1987; a son, Jerry Kimball Athey, died June 5, 1992; and a stepson, Richard Paul Frick, died Dec. 11, 1998.
Survivors include wife Maybell Walker Frick Athey, whom he married Sept. 2, 1989; sons James Kenneth “Ken” Athey, Concord, and Michael Cordell “Mike” Athey, China Grove; stepson John Thomas Frick, Rockwell; daughter Patricia Ann “Pat” Carter, Mocksville; sisters Mary A. Trexler, Virginia Beach, Va., and Zelma A. Redwing, Salisbury; nine grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Saturday, Rowan Memorial Park Mausoleum, conducted by the Rev. Jack D. Luther.
Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Summersett Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Pine Hill Road.

Lena Mae Burney Bryan
LUMBERTON —Lena Mae Burney Bryan, 87, Lumberton, died Wednesday (June 14, 2000) at Beverly Health Care. She was the mother of Hubert “Dewey” Bryan of Salisbury.

Curtis Ray Carter
CHINA GROVE — Curtis Ray Carter, 71, 607 Shue Road, died Thursday (June 15, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury.
Born Feb. 25, 1929, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Carter was a son of the late Everette S. and Julia Gracie Cline Carter. He was educated in the Rowan County schools.
A veteran of the U.S. Air Force, he served during the Korean War. Retired from Republic Foil, he had formerly worked at Cannon Mills.
His wife, Margaret Clouser Carter, died Dec. 15, 1998.
Survivors include sons Richard Carter, Hummelstown, Pa., and David Carter, Kannapolis; daughter Donna Fowler, Kannapolis; brothers Lonnie Carter, Salisbury, Kenneth Carter, Rockwell, and Harold Carter, Kannapolis; sisters Gertie Mae Wilkerson, Kannapolis, and Nell Burger, Steeleton, Pa.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Herbert Eugene Ellis
CLEVELAND — The funeral will be Sunday for Herbert Eugene Ellis, 41, 9525 Statesville Highway, who died Wednesday (June 14, 2000) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born Aug. 6, 1958, in Rowan County, Mr. Ellis was a son of Leonard Sifford, Mooresville, and Virginia Ellis Cuthbertson, Woodleaf.
A graduate of West Rowan High School, he was employed by Carrier Haulers, Statesville.
Survivors, in addition to his parents,include wife Brenda Dalton Ellis; sons Herbert Ellis Jr. and Dale Ellis, both of the home, and Brandon Hardy, Landis; stepfather Shirley Cuthbertson, Woodleaf; brothers Kenny and Jemale Cuthbertson, both of Woodleaf, Freddie, Shirley and Donnie Ray Cuthbertson, all of Salisbury, Leonard Sifford Jr., Statesville, and William and Calvin SIfford, both of Mooresville; sisters Sophia Davidson, Cleveland, Vickie Davis, Salisbury, and Sherry Parks, China Grove; stepsister Nancy Luckey, Granite Quarry; and three grandchildren.

Kevin O’Neal Harrison
Kevin O’Neal Harrison, 35, Brooklyn, N.Y., formerly of Salisbury, died Sunday (June 11, 2000) in New York from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
Born Aug. 3, 1965, in Brooklyn, Mr. Harrison was a son of Jannie Harrison Terry and Ollie O. Outlaw. He grew up in the home of Iona House and Lucille Harrison of Salisbury.
Mr. Harrison was educated in the Rowan County schools and in New York City. A police officer, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Additional survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Harrison; daughter Zakiya Gabrielly Harrison; brothers Jeffrey Harris, Salisbury, Robert Thomas, North Carolina, and Ellis Allens and William Paul Terry, both of New Jersey; and sisters Tangerine Ellis, New Jersey, and Linda Williams, Maryland.
Services were held at 11 this morning at First Baptist Crown Height, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Betty Duffell Ivey
KINGSPORT, Tenn. — Betty Anne Duffell Ivey, 74, 100 Neatherland Lane, died Thursday (June 15, 2000) at Holston Valley Hospital and Medical Center after an extended illness.
Born in Atlanta, Mrs. Ivey was the daughter of the late William Grady and Rebecca Harmon Duffell. She grew up in Salisbury, N.C.
Survivors include husband William R. Ivey Jr.; sons William R. Ivey III, Johnson City, and Kevin D. Ivey, Kingsport; daughter Rebecca Ivey Petrick, Vale, N.C.; sister June Duffell Russell, Pensacola, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
Services: Graveside, 10 a.m. Saturday, Oak Hill Cemetery.
Visitation: 5-7 tonight, Oak Hill Funeral Home. Services conducted at 7 in the funeral home chapel by the Rev. E.L. Scranton.
Kathleen Davis Porter
CHINA GROVE — Kathleen Dolores Davis Porter, 73, China Grove, died Wednesday (June 14, 2000) at her home.
Born Oct. 6, 1926, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Porter was a daughter of the late Wiley VanBuren and Ruby Jane Hines Davis. She graduated from Cannon High School in 1945 and from the nursing school at Rowan Community Hospital in 1949.
She worked as a registered nurse at hospitals and nursing homes in the Gaithersburg, Md., area before her retirement.
Survivors include husband James Arthur Porter; sons James Arthur Porter Jr., Colorado Springs, Colo., Wiley Thomas Porter, Pilot Mountain, and Stephen Jeffrey Porter, Salisbury; brother James W. Davis, Faith; and five grandchildren.
The body will be cremated and a memorial service held at Evergreen Cremation Services Chapel on a later date.

Grace Cook Satterwhite
The funeral will be Saturday for Grace Irene Cook Satterwhite, 99, who died Wednesday (June 14, 2000) at the Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home after six months of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.
Born Oct. 31, 1900, in Rowan County, Mrs. Satterwhite was a daughter of the late David Franklin and Lucy Ann Hathcock Cook. She was educated in the Rowan County schools.
A Lutheran, she owned and operated two boarding houses in Washington, D.C., for 27 years. She later was a homemaker in Salisbury.
Her first husband, James Thomas Haynes, and her second husband, Bill Satterwhite, preceded her in death. A son, David Thomas Haynes, died April 22, 1999.
Survivors include two grandchildren.
Services: 2 p.m. Saturday, Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Gene Bost, chaplain, Salisbury Lutheran Nursing Home. Burial, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.
Visitation: 1-2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Margaret Estes Shipton
The funeral will be Saturday for Margaret Estes Shipton, 86, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (June 14, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center after two months of declining health.
Born Aug. 29, 1913, in Columbia, S.C., Mrs. Shipton was a daughter of the late James Dillard and Evelyn McDonald Estes. She was educated in the Columbia, S.C., schools and at the University of South Carolina.
Before her retirement, she taught in the Stanly, Iredell and Alexander county schools and in the Kannapolis schools.
She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rockwell, where she was a member of WELCA and the Arthur Shipton Sunday School Class. She had been a member of the Home Demonstration Club for 70 years.
Her husband, the Rev. C. Lee Shipton, died Sept. 4, 1993. A daughter, Lois Evelyn Shipton, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include son Paul Shipton, Salisbury; daughter Ann Marie Lentz, Gastonia; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services: 4 p.m. Saturday, Immanuel Lutheran Church, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Sheeks. Burial, church cemetery.
Visitation: In the fellowship hall after the service.

Beatrice ‘Bea’ Sprinkle
KANNAPOLIS — Beatrice Annie Helms Weddington Sprinkle, 87, formerly of West 16th Street, died Wednesday (June 14, 2000) at Big Elm Retirement Center.
Born Oct. 20, 1912, in Cabarrus County, Mrs. Sprinkle was a daughter of the late Ed and Delma Bass Helms. Retired from Cannon Mills’ sheet department, she was a member of Kannapolis Church of God.
Her first husband, George Weddington, died in 1980.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. William Sprinkle; son Dale Weddington, Statesville; daughter Clotilda W. Rodgers, High Point; brother Frank Helms, Winston-Salem; sister Margie Scarboro, Kannapolis; stepsons William Sprinkle Jr., Charlotte, Eugene Sprinkle, Kannapolis, and Max Sprinkle, New Jersey; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Daniel Henry Warlick
The funeral is today for Daniel Henry Warlick, 63, Salisbury, who died Tuesday (June 13, 2000) at Duke University Medical Center, Durham. He had been in declining health since November 1999.
Born Oct. 8, 1936, in Rowan County, Mr. Warlick was the son of the late Frederick Michael and Claire Hereford Warlick. He was a 1954 graduate of Boyden High School and a 1958 graduate of Catawba College.
A veteran of the U.S.Army, he served as a member of the local 991st Transportation Reserve Unit for eight years and went on active duty with the unit during the Berlin crisis in 1961.
He was associated with Hobson-Reynolds Insurance Agency for some years before he purchased the company in 1977. He sold the business to Isenhour-Freeman Insurance in 1991.
He also began appraising real estate in 1973. A certified general real estate appraiser, he was owner of Warlick Real Estate Appraisals.
Mr. Warlick was a member of First United Church of Christ, where he was treasurer of the Laymen’s Fellowship and a past president of the church council. He was also a member and past president of the Salisbury Board of Realtors, a member and past Exalted Ruler of Salisbury Elks Lodge 699 and a member of Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge 576.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred Broome Warlick, whom he married June 7, 1959; son Daniel Warlick Jr., Salt Lake City, Utah; daughters Becky Warlick, Durham, and Marie Warlick, Black Mountain; brother Frederick M. Warlick, Greensboro; and a grandson.
Services: 3 today, First United Church of Christ, conducted by the Rev. David L. Crook, pastor, and the Rev. Guy Fisher. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Members of the Salisbury Board of Realtors, Salisbury Elks Lodge and Andrew Jackson Masonic Lodge will be seated as a group. Burial, City Memorial Park.
Visitation: 1-2:30 today in the church parlor.
