Scooter has graduated from West, Gurley is looking for Donte Minter to have an even bigger impact. The 6-7 junior has been dominating the AAU circuit with the Charlotte Royals and even hit the winning shot in a tournament in Kentucky recently.

Terris Sifford’s stock has risen so much the 6-foot-3 guard has already received one offer for a full scholarship. Gurley anticipates many more once the season begins.

It’s a good thing the Pacers won at least one game in the NBA Finals. Had they been swept by the Lakers, they were thinking of changing their name to the Indiana Pacemakers.

n

After breaking up with Brooke Shields, Andre Agassi announced his intention to marry Steffi Graff. He’ll do it on the condtion she never has a TV show called Suddenly Steffi.

Have you watched Shaquille O’Neal shoot free throws?

I’ll tell you this. If I’m ever up in front of a firing squad, I want Shaq holding the gun.

n

Joe Finney will play football at Catawba College, according to coach David Bennett. The South Rowan lineman will probably be redshirted next season, sidering Catawba has its entire offensive line back, except Brian Hinson.

Bennett said the4re’s one thing Finey has to work on. “He needs to get meaner,” Bennett said. “He’s too nice. And that’s because he’s such a great kid.”

n

Here’s an important announcement. Refunds are available for all parents who signed their kid up for the “Learn to Shoot like Reggie Miller” basketball camp.

n

There’s a new movie out, called, “Gone in 60 Seconds.” I think it’s about the Indiana Pacers’ run to the NBA title.

n

There’s an Elvis in the South Atlantic League: Elvis Corporan of the Greensboro Bats. He recently told Bill Hass of the News & Record, “I hear something at every field: ‘Elvis has left the building. Elvis is dead. Where did you leave your guitar?’ I’ve even heard, ‘Elvis, I love you.’

“When we were in Charleston, they had an Elvis Night and an Elvis imersonator threw out the first pitch. They play Elvis music on the loudspeaker. Most of it is funny.”

n

Man it was hot yesterday. It was so hot, people were sweating like Shaq at the free throw line.

n

Caught in the act: The University of Maryland is investigating allegations that members of the 6-time defending women’s lacrosse team took recruits out to a bar to drink.

n

Jay Swicegood, who grew up in Salisbury and still has family here, resigned as head football coach at Edenton Holmes.

n

Games for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge are set for Nov. 28-29. The big news is that Duke will host Illinois in Greensboro. North Carolina goes to Michigan State and Wake Forest goes to Michigan. Scooter and N.C. State will host Purdue. All games will, of coures, by televised.

n

Steve Young retired from the San Francisco 49ers on doctor’s advice. After four concussions in two years, they told him the cold, hard truth: one more concussion and he could end up a Reformed Party candidate.

n

And finally ...

Congrats to East Rowan’s Danny Misenheimer and West Rowan’s Kari Schenk, named earlier this week as Rowan County Athletes of the Year.

You really didn’t think I could write this column without Scooter and Schenk being mentioned, now did ya?
