Ruth Hazel Cain Austin

Ruth Hazel Cain Austin, Salisbury, died Tuesday (June 13, 2000) at Iredell Memorial Hospital, Statesville.

Elmer ‘Slingshot’ Beaver

ROCKWELL — Elmer Ray “Slingshot” Beaver, 84, died Tuesday (June 13, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a period of declining health.

Born Nov. 22, 1915, in Rowan County, Mr. Beaver was a son of the late Robert and Elizabeth Miller Beaver. He was educated in the Rowan County schools. A member of Phaniels Baptist Church, he had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1 weave room.

His wife, Ruth Irene Hopkins Beaver, died Nov. 29, 1989.

Survivors include sons Ray and Ronald Beaver, both of Rockwell; daughters Jackie Wilhelm and Loretta Whitley, both of Rockwell, Vickie Wilson, Sherrills Ford, Phyllis Davis, Morehead City, and Margaret Rhoades, Hays; brother Harry Beaver, Rockwell; sisters Cleo Stirewalt, Rockwell, Hester Surratt, Denton, Lola Miller, Salisbury, and Doshia Shue, Mount Pleasant; 23 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 2 p.m. Thursday, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, conducted by the Rev. Alan Misenheimer, pastor, Grace Bible Church.

Visitation: The family will receive friends at the home of Loretta Whitley, 7170 Hwy. 52, Rockwell.

Thomas Eugene Burr

RICHFIELD — Thomas Eugene Burr, 93, died Monday (June 12, 2000) at Autumn Care of Salisbury after two weeks of serious illness.

Born Oct. 4, 1906, in Anson County, Mr. Burr was a son of the late John Robert and Elisa Ellen Gulledge Burr. He was educated in the Anson County schools and had retired from W.M. Morgan Saw Mill, Gold Hill. He was a member of East Corinth Baptist Church, Gold Hill.

His wife, Maude Yarbrough Burr, died April 12, 1996.

Survivors include son Thomas Eugene Burr Jr., Stanley; daughters Joyce Goodman, Richfield, Virginia Alexander, Salisbury, and Louise Honbaier, Mount Holly; sisters Grace Blake, West End, and Ruth Burroughs, Greensboro; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, East Corinth Baptist Church, Gold Hill, conducted by the Rev. Johnny Daniels. The body will be placed in the church at 3:30. Burial, family plot in church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, LyerlyFuneral Home, Salisbury.

Michael Wayne Crabtree

ALBEMARLE — The funeral will be Thursday for Michael Wayne Crabtree, 52, 714 Prospect Church Road, who died Sunday (June 11, 2000) at his home.

Born June 26, 1947, in Mecklenburg County, Mr. Crabtree was a son of Elizabeth Cobb Crabtree, Charlotte, and the late Lewis Crabtree. He had retired from the Charlotte Observer and was a member of Christ Episcopal Church. He received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include wife Diane Krashner Crabtree; son Scott Crabtree, Woodbridge, Va.; daughter Deborah Waltman, Toronto,Canada; brothers Barry and Gary Crabtree, both of Charlotte; and sisters Sherry Scott, Greenville, S.C., and Anita Eller, Charlotte.

Services: Memorial, 11 a.m. Thursday, Christ Episcopal Church, conducted by the Rev. Allen Belton. Inurement in church gardens.

Visitation: 10-11 a.m. Thursday, church parish house.

Joe TomGriffin

OAKBORO — Joe Tom Griffin, 70, 912 N. Long St. Extension, brother of Bill Griffin, Albemarle, died Tuesday (June 13, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital, Albemarle.

Services: 4 p.m. Thursday, Hartsell Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, Albemarle. Burial, Oakboro Cemetery.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home on North Long Street Extension.

 

Mary Eunice McDaniel

Mary Eunice McDaniel, 75, Barger Road, died Tuesday (June 13, 2000) at Salisbury Lutheran Home.

Born March 2, 1925, in Cooleemee, Mrs. McDaniel was a daughter of the late James Wade and Essie Bowers McDaniel. She attended Edgewood Baptist Church.

Survivors include sisters Lorine Sain, Mocksville, Vermell Lee, Rockwell, Dare Dotson, Barbara McDaniel and Louise Cauble, all of Salisbury, and Judy Hunt, Wake Forest; and brother Bobby McDaniel, Cooleemee.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Thursday,Legion Memorial Park, Cooleemee, conducted by the Rev. Gene Bruce.

Visitation: 7-8 tonight, Eaton Funeral Home, Mocksville.

 

Rev. Jerry W. Townsend

KANNAPOLIS — The funeral will be Friday for Jerry William Townsend, 1200 Berkshire Drive, who died Monday (June 12, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord, after 10 months of illness.

Born May 13, 1929, in Scotland County, Mr. Townsend was a son of the late Jerry Ruben and Nora Belle Lewis Townsend. He graduated in 1947 with honors from Philadelphus High School, Red Springs. A veteran, he served in the U.S. Army attaining the rank of sergeant until his discharge in 1952. In 1950 he was honored as Soldier of the Year.

After his discharge, he was an electrician for several years with Carolina Power and Light Co. In 1958 he entered Campbell College, where he was elected president of the Ministerial Conference and was president of the Baptist Student UnionCouncil.

He received his bachelor of arts degree from Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City,Tenn., in 1960, where he was selected by the college president to go on numerous preaching engagements.

After graduation he served as the pastor of Bethel Church, Newport, Tenn. He was the pastor of Dilworth Baptist Church, Charlotte, in 1962, and at First Baptist Church, Maxton, in 1968.

Mr. Townsend studied at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Wake Forest, from 1970-1973. In 1976, he was the pastor of Beverly Hills Baptist Church,Rockingham, until 1980, when he became the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Kannapolis.

For the past several years he held interim positions at Southside Baptist Church, Mooresville, and later at Franklin Heights Baptist Church, Kannapolis.

He served on the evangelism team with the Foreign Mission Board to Guatemala and also taught in the Ukraine at the St. James Bible College, Kiev.

Survivors include wife Elsa T. Townsend; son Jerry W. Townsend Jr., of the home; daughters Benita Townsend Long, Concord, and Rosalyn Townsend Williams, Lynchburg, Va.; brother Aubrey Townsend, Lumberton; sisters Clara Tyner, Daisy Nunnery and Nora Rogers, all of Lumberton, and Frances Williams, Indian Trail; and five grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Friday, Calvary Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Frank Floyd, the Rev. Tim Jernigan and the Rev. Tom Tucker. The body will be placed in the church at 1. Entombment, Carolina Memorial Park Plaza Mausoleum Crypt.

Visitation: 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Whitley’s Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home on Berkshire Drive.

Daniel Henry Warlick

Daniel Henry Warlick, 63, Salisbury, died Tuesday (June 13, 2000) at Duke University Medical Center, Durham.

Orene Williams Watson

SPENCER — The funeral will be Thursday for Orene Williams Watson, 81, Spencer, who died Tuesday (June 13, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after ten years of declining health and six months of serious illness.

Born May 14, 1919, in Catawba County, Mrs. Watson was a daughter of the late Theodore and Mary Turner Williams. Educated in the Catawba County schools, she was a homemaker and member of Oakland Heights Baptist Church, Salisbury.

Her husband, Glenn F. Watson, preceded her in death.

Survivors include daughters Carolyn Coley, Spencer, Darlene Harris, Cleveland, and Brenda Morris, Salisbury; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Thursday, Lyerly Funeral Home Chapel, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Edward Bitner, pastor, Oakland Heights Baptist Church. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, Salisbury.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Carolyn Coley in Spencer.
