Grace Cook Cabe

Grace Cook Cabe, 73, Salisbury, died Friday (June 9, 2000) at her home.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Alyce Yzette Cates

ALBEMARLE — Alyce Yzette Cates, 53, 1901 Woodhaven Drive, Apartment 18, died Friday (June 9, 2000) at Stanly Memorial Hospital.

Born Oct. 27, 1946, in Stanly County, she was a daughter of Myrleen Cates Page, Albemarle, and the late Ernest Franklin Cates. She was a disabled knitter.

Survivors, in addition to her mother, include sons Jerry Fraley Jr., Albemarle, and Sammy Joe Thompson, Charlotte; sister Brenda Allen, Kenner, La.; brothers Johnny Alco Cates, Cleveland, and Richard Franklin Cates, Albemarle; and three grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle, conducted by the Rev. Lawrence Walton. Burial, Anderson Grove Baptist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of her mother at 35577 Pennington Road.

 

Wylie Rayford ‘Ray’ Ellis

EAST SPENCER — Wylie Rayford “Ray” Ellis, 54, 108 Heiligtown Road, died Thursday (June 8, 2000) at Heritage Plantation, Salisbury, after several months of declining health.

Born June 11, 1945, in Rowan County, Mr. Ellis was a son of the late Josephine Dunlap and Thomas Stacey Ellis. A graduate of Dunbar High School, East Spencer and Modern Barber School, Winston-Salem, he was last employed at HIC-Cone Mills, Salisbury.

Survivors include wife Priscilla Ellis, Winston-Salem; sons Wylie Rayford Ellis Jr. and Kenneth Ellis, both of Winston-Salem; daughter Nicole Ellis, Lake City, S.C.; brother James A. Ellis, East Spencer; sisters Sallie Holt and Virginia Wiggins, both of Salisbury; and three grandchildren.

Services: 1 p.m. Monday, New Hope AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. ReToy Gaston, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30 p.m. Monday, at the church.

Edward Mitchell Gupton

Edward Mitchell Gupton, 76, 833 Hidden Creek Circle, died Friday (June 9, 2000) at his residence.

Born Dec. 6, 1923, in Salisbury, Mr. Gupton was a son of the late Annie Hoffman and Jordan Milton Gupton. Educated in the Salisbury schools, he was a graduate of Boyden High School.

He owned and operated Sawmill and Machinery Service for 18 years before retiring. A U.S. Marine veteran of World War II, he participated in the invasions of Iwo Jima and Saipan.

He was a member of First Baptist Church and Fulton Masonic Lodge 99 AF and AM where he was a junior deacon. He was a former member of Harold B. Jarrett American Legion and Hudson-Miller-Tatum VFW Post 3006.

Survivors include wife Dorothy Walls Gupton, whom he married Jan. 4, 1942; sons Dr. Edward M. Gupton Jr. and Barry W. Gupton, both of Salisbury; brother Milton H. Gupton, Garner; sister Doris Gupton Horton, Salisbury; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Summersett Funeral Home, conducted by Bishop Michael Craddock. Burial, Rowan Memorial Park, with graveside rites by Fulton Masonic Lodge.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home.

Julian Locke Lingle

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. Julian Locke Lingle, 72, Charlottesville, died Friday (June 9, 2000) at a local hospital.

Born Jan. 8, 1928, in Rowan County, N.C., Mr. Lingle was a son of the late Ethel Safrit and Julian Ralph Lingle. Former sales manager for Coggins Motors, he was also president of Lingle Bus Co.

A former member of the Jaycees, he coached Little League baseball. He was a past district governor of the Charlottesville Host Lions Club, where he had received the Melvin Jones Award and was slated to receive the Humanitarian Award.

Mr. Lingle was a charter member of St. Mark Lutheran Church and its first Sunday school superintendent. A U.S. Navy veteran, he served aboard the USS Cleveland.

Survivors include wife Mary Anna Lingle; son Gary Lingle, Charlottesville; daughters Judy Lingle and Patricia Beale, both of Charlottesville; sisters Faye O’Bryant, Florida, and Ailene Humphrey, Salisbury, N.C.; brother Voigt Lingle, Salisbury, N.C.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Sunday, St. Mark Lutheran Church, conducted by the Rev. Bruce Wollenburg and the Rev. Dr. Harold L. Bare. Burial, Monticello Memory Gardens.

Visitation: Memorial service by Lions Club, 6:30 tonight, Hill and Wood Funeral Service, with visitation following, 7-8 p.m.

Juanita Miller

MOORESVILLE — Juanita Miller, 73, East McNeely Avenue, died Friday (June 9, 2000) at her residence.

Born Oct. 31, 1926, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late Francis Field and Myrtle Upright Miller. A graduate of Mooresville High School, she had retired as a secretary at Burlington Industries after 20 years with the company. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church.

Survivors include brothers Wayne F. Miller, Charlotte, and Clayton E. Miller, Mooresville; and sister Sarah M. Goodman, Mooresville.

Services: 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Cavin Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Phillip DeBerry Jr. Burial, Glenwood Memorial Park.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home.

Memorials: Donor’s choice.

 

Richard Alan Morris

Richard Alan Morris, 35, Salisbury, died Saturday (June 10, 2000) at his residence.

‘Granny’ Pearl Owen

MOCKSVILLE — “Granny” Pearl Grubb Owen, 80, U.S. Highway 158 East, died Friday (June 9, 2000) at her residence.

Born Sept. 8, 1919, in Davidson County, Mrs. Owen was a daughter of the late Sara Rebecca Walton and Noah Webster Grubb. Retired from Montcastle Hosiery in Lexington, she was a member of Smith Grove United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Owen was preceded in death by husbands James T. Goss and Charlie Franklin Owen.

Survivors include son Perry Owen, Mocksville; daughters Mary G. Smith and Rebecca Clark, both of Mocksville; brothers Foy F. Grubb, Welcome, Cleo Grubb, Spencer, and Leo Grubb, Churchland; sister Mildred Potts, Tyro; nine grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Services: 2 p.m. Sunday, Eaton Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Gilbert Pierce. Burial, Smith Grove United Methodist Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, at the funeral home.

 

Boyd David Phillips

CHINA GROVE — Boyd David Phillips, 82, Bradford Village, Kernersville, died Thursday (June 8, 2000) at Forsyth Medical Center, Winston-Salem.

Born April 3, 1918, in Kannapolis, Mr. Phillips was a son of the late Cora Bost and Oscar Phillips. A graduate of Cramerton High School, he was formerly employed at Cannon Mills. Also an independent contractor, he had served as building inspector in Salisbury and Long Beach.

Mr. Phillips was a member of Oak Island Baptist Church, Oak Island, where he served as deacon. He was also a member of the N.C. Building and Plumbing Association. He was a U.S. Navy World War II veteran of the Seabees.

His wife of 49 years, Frances Suther Phillips, died March 27, 1990.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, First Baptist Church, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Ed Daniel, former pastor. The body will be taken to the church at 2:30 minutes. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park.

Visitation: 4:15-5 p.m. Sunday, Family Life Center, First Baptist Church.

Elva Lowder Pollack

ALBEMARLE — Elva Cecelia Lowder Pollack, 47, 36264 Fredericksburg, Farmington Hills, Mich., died Thursday (June 8, 2000) at her residence.

Born Oct. 20, 1952, in Stanly County, she was a daughter of the late Clara Mauldin and Clifford William Lowder. She was a Detroit schoolteacher.

Survivors include husband Irvin J. Pollack; son Daniel Joshua Pollack, Farmington Hills, Mich.; brothers Richard D. Lowder, Albemarle, and Tony W. Lowder; sister Geraldine L. Sides, Albemarle, and Kayel L. Sides, New London.

Samuel David Ramseur

NEWTON — Samuel David Ramseur, 40, 315 S. Church St., died Wednesday (June 7, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a lingering illness.

Born July 17, 1959, in Catawba County, Mr. Ramseur was a son of Virginia Ramseur, of the home and the late Allen Ramseur. He was a member of Glorious Church of God.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include sisters Kathyrn Sellers and Gloria Polk, both of Salisbury, and Dorothy Ramseur, Barbara Barker and Dolores Cowens, all of Newton; and brothers Ricky Ramseur, Salisbury, and Terry and Allen Ramseur Jr., both of Newton.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Mount Olive Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Pastor Ethel Mae Ramseur. Burial, Eastview Cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Monday, at the church.

Carl Neil Safrit

Carl Neil Safrit, 58, Salisbury, died Thursday (June 8, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem, after two years of declining health and six months of serious illness.

Born March 10, 1942, in Rowan County, Mr. Safrit was a son of the late Maybelle Weaver and Harry Lee Safrit. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was a cook at Beattie’s Open Kitchen Restaurant for more than 30 years before retiring due to ill health. He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.

Survivors include son Harry Lee Safrit, with whom he made his home; daughter Elizabeth Ann Wood, Salisbury; brothers Steve Safrit, Rockford, Ill., Tom Safrit, Lewes, Del., and Robert, Jim, Glenn, Eddie and Kenneth Safrit, all of Salisbury; sister Peggy Agner, Salisbury; and five grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Monday, Lyerly Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Mark Brown, pastor, Tabernacle Baptist Church. Burial, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church cemetery.

Visitation: 2-3 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of son Harry Lee Safrit.

Billy Edward Smoot

MOCKSVILLE — Billy Edward Smoot, 57, Depot Street, died Friday (June 9, 2000), after a period of declining health.

Born in Davie County, Mr. Smoot was a son of the late John C. and Edith Mock Smoot. A 1960 graduate of Central Davie High School, Mr. Smoot was a member of Mocksville Second Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include sons Edward and Roger Smoot, both of Mocksville, and Ryan Carson, Winston-Salem; daughters Tawana Smoot, Mocksville, and Rhonda Carson, Winston-Salem; stepdaughters Crystal Smoot Dulin and Tami Smoot, both of Mocksville, and Shawn Smoot, Salisbury; and brother Melvin Mock, Mocksville.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Graham Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Walter Tidline. Burial, Mocksville Second Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Visitation: 3 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at 324 Depot St.

 

Michael Dolan Talbert

ALBEMARLE — Michael Dolan Talbert, 43, Pittsboro, died Thursday (June 8, 2000) at his residence.

Born Feb. 19, 1957, in Albemarle, Mr. Talbert was a son of the Rev. Dolan and Shirley Talbert, both of Albemarle. A U.S. Air Force veteran, he was a law enforcement officer with the Chatham County Sherrif’s Department.

Survivors, in addition to his parents, include wife Nancy F. Talbert; daughter Jennifer Talbert, Greensboro; sister Marissa T. Banton, Suffolk, Va.; brothers Mark and Myron Talbert, both of Greensboro; and step-grandmother Virginia Dennis, Albemarle.

Services: 3 p.m. Sunday, Congregational Christian Church, conducted by the Rev. David Alexander.

KANNAPOLIS — Ruth Grace Wyatt, 511 E. 20th St., died Friday (June 9, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
