Marlins pick Moore

BY STAFF REPORTS
SALISBURY POST

The Florida Marlins are well aware that North Rowan High star Daniel Moore is a near lock to go to the University of North Carolina and forego professional baseball until he is eligible for the draft once more in 2003, but they took a flyer on him on Tuesday just the same.

The Marlins tabbed Moore with the first pick of the 23rd round of the baseball draft.

From all reports, the Marlins, like everyone else, had Moore projected as a much higher pick, but the questions regarding his signability pushed his name down draft lists.

Marlin scout John Castleberry told WSTP’s Howard Platt that he respects and understands Moore’s position and his family’s position, but he and the Marlins will make a pitch to sign the 6-foot-6 lefty nonetheless.

The Moores understand Castleberry’s position, too. He has a job to do, and he’s going to do it to the best of his ability.

“We understand that we’re rolling the dice,” Castleberry told Platt. “Yes, it’s a gamble, but we like Daniel. He’s throwing the fastball high-80s, sometimes 90 and he has a good breaking ball. And he projects great down the road. He’s going to get better. He’s tall and rangy and he has maturity and poise. That’s what we go on.”

Castleberry said it was difficult to be specific about where Moore would have gone in the draft had he not indicated a preference for college, but did indicate Moore would have gone much higher.

“Definitely in the first 10 rounds, and that means the top 300 players in the country,” he said. “A good chance he’d have been in the first five rounds — the top 150 players. It’s hard to say, but somewhere right in that range.”

Moore showed again last night exactly why both UNC coach Mike Fox and the Marlins are so excited about him. He pitched a three-hit complete game against American Legion league-leading Concord, striking out 12 batters.
