daughter of the late Rhonda Jane and Charles P. Galliher.
She was preceded in death by husbands Marvin L. Owens,
Judson W. Whisnant and Dock D. Anderson and daughter Margaret Owens.
Survivors include sons Lewis A. Owens, Taylorsville, Lonnie
C. Owens, Statesville, Leon H.Owens, Polkton, and Larry D. Owens, Conover; daughter
Shirley Hellard, Ellenboro; stepchildren Beverly W. Farrahar, Gastonia, Terry Whisnant,
Irving, Texas, and Dewey L. Anderson, Frances A. Steele and Betty A. Wooten, all of
Cleveland; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and 14
step-grandchildren.

HARRISBURG The funeral will be Wednesday for Deborah
Ann McKnight Elder, 52, 500 Valhalla Drive, who died Sunday (June 4, 2000) at Wake Forest
University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem. She had been in declining health for
several years.
Born Jan, 2, 1948, in Rowan County, Mrs. Elder was a
daughter of Boyd Ray and Judith Jordan McKnight of China Grove.
A 1966 graduate of South Rowan High School, she was a
former hairdresser and a former sales accountant with Charlotte Motor Speedway. She was a
member of the Drivers Wife Auxiliary at the speedway and Covenant Church of
Harrisburg.
Survivors, in addition to her parents, include husband J.C.
Jake Elder; stepsons Randy and Andy Elder, both of Elberton, Ga.; stepdaughter
Sandy Elder Maxwell, Elberton, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

MOORESVILLE Effie Fetterson, 54, 7376 Selma Drive,
died Friday (June 2, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
Born Oct. 4, 1946, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of
the late Pauline Glaspy and Wurdy J. Mills. A graduate of Unity High School, she was a
former employee of Troutman Industries, the Brian Center and Genesis ElderCare. She was a
member of Mount Calvary Fire Baptized Holiness Church, Kannapolis.
Survivors include her husband, the Rev. John A. Fetterson;
sisters Ada V. Mills, Mooresville, Catherine M. Carpenter, Troutman, and Mary M. Huntley;
brothers Curtis Mills, Elder Nathaniel Mills and Eugene Mills; and foster brother Scottie
Ray Mills.

Alvesia Edward Heater
The funeral will be held Wednesday for Alvesia Edward
Heater, 71, Salisbury, who died Sunday (June 4, 2000) at the Brian Center after a period
of declining health.
Born Aug. 17, 1928, in LaFrank, W.Va., Mr. Heater was a son
of the late Clyde and Luvada McCort Heater. Educated in the schools of Webster Springs,
W.Va., Mr. Heater worked for Carolina Stamping as a tool and die maker. He was a member of
Independent Victory Temple Church, Concord.
Survivors include wife Marion T. Heater; son Dennis Heater,
Thomasville; daughters Alice Nicholas and Reba Henley, both of Salisbury; sister Irene
Heater, Painesville, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

CHINA GROVE The funeral will be held Wednesday for
Ada Overcash Hester, 92, formerly of 53 Walnut St., who died Monday (June 5, 2000)at
Concord Nursing Home, Concord.
Born May 24, 1908, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of
the late Nettie Menius and Archie Lee Overcash. Educated at the old Cress School in Rowan
County, she was a former winder with Cannon Mills and Linn Mills in Landis. She was a
member of Mount Zion United Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clifford B.
Hampton, and her second husband, Early Hester, who died in 1985.
Survivors include sons Eugene and Wade Hampton, both of
Kannapolis, and H.L. Hampton, Salisbury; stepson Herman Hester, Winston-Salem;
stepdaughter Helen Browder, Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and 16

Born Nov. 24, 1923, in Lancaster, S.C. Mr. Jones was a son
of the late James G. and Pearl McGriff Jones. Retired from Cannon Mills after 30 years
with the company, he was a member of Bethel AME Zion Church, where he sang in the Gospel
Choir and served on the Senior Usher Board.
Survivors include wife Ella B. Jones; son James E. Jones,
of the home; daughter Janet J. Murdock, Landis; sisters Anni Shannon, Lancaster, S.C.,
Naomi Jones and Anna Mae McCarol, both of Kannapolis; brothers Willie C. Jones and Henry

KANNAPOLIS Donzel Ralph Phillips, 66, Kannapolis,
died Sunday (June 4, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.
Born Dec. 25, 1933, in Greene County, Pa., Mr. Phillips was
a son of the late Belle Moore and Arthur Phillips. He was employed with Babcock
&Wilcox Inc., a steel company in Beaver Falls, Pa., for 25 years until his retirement
due to disability. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict.

Richard Phillips, Kannapolis; sister Mary White, Warren, Ohio; brothers Webster Phillips,

Born June 21, 1914, in Oconee County, S.C., Mr. Phillips
was a son of the late Lewis and Lela Taylor Phillips. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II,
he had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, No. 3 weave room.
A daughter, Mary Elizabeth Phillips, preceded him in death.

School, he was a member of Moores Chapel AME Zion Church.
Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy and retired from the U.S.
Air Force. He was a member of J.C. Price American Legion Post 107.

late Rev. W.C. and Cora Lee Hollman Nelson. Educated in the Davie County schools, she was
a homemaker and a member of West Park Baptist Church.
Mrs. Starnes was preceded in death by her first husband,
Benjamin Harrison West.

of the late Clarice Perkins and Leslie Scott White. He was educated at Winecoff School
inConcord. Retired from Cannon Mills, he was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist
Church.
Mr. White served in the U.S. Armys anti-aircraft
battalion during World War II. He was a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America
and the Queen City Model A Club.

Michael Edward Pozyck
SPENCER The funeral will be Wednesday for Michael
Edward Pozyck, 53, 403 Seventh St., who died Sunday (June 4, 2000) at Rowan Regional
Medical Center, Salisbury, after a brief illness.
Born March 7, 1947, in Lawrence, Mass., Mr. Pozyck was a
son of Annie Edith Sherrill Pozcyk of Spencer and the late Louis B. Pozyck.
A 1965 graduate of North Rowan High School, he attended
Catawba College and was a business administration graduate of Rowan Technical College. He
worked for many years at Pope & Arey Food Store and was last employed by Jordans
Hot Spot.
Mr. Pozyck served as a gunners mate in the U.S. Navy
from 1967 to 1971. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Mary
Elizabeth Cooki Butler Pozyck; son Carl Michael Pozyck, Boone; daughter Anna
Maria Pozyck, of the home; and brothers Stephen Sherrill Pozyck, Faith, and Alan Louis
