Jettie Anderson

STATESVILLE —

Born Feb. 5, 1917, in Iredell County, Mrs. Anderson was a daughter of the late Rhonda Jane and Charles P. Galliher.

She was preceded in death by husbands Marvin L. Owens, Judson W. Whisnant and Dock D. Anderson and daughter Margaret Owens.

Survivors include sons Lewis A. Owens, Taylorsville, Lonnie C. Owens, Statesville, Leon H.Owens, Polkton, and Larry D. Owens, Conover; daughter Shirley Hellard, Ellenboro; stepchildren Beverly W. Farrahar, Gastonia, Terry Whisnant, Irving, Texas, and Dewey L. Anderson, Frances A. Steele and Betty A. Wooten, all of Cleveland; 11 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and 14 step-grandchildren.

Services: 5 p.m. Wednesday, Crystal Waters Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Charles Jones. Committal service, 1 p.m. Sunday, Gaston Memorial Park, Gastonia.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church and at other times will be at the home of son Lonnie Owens, 426 Fanjoy Road, Statesville.

Deborah McKnight Elder

HARRISBURG — The funeral will be Wednesday for Deborah Ann McKnight Elder, 52, 500 Valhalla Drive, who died Sunday (June 4, 2000) at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, Winston-Salem. She had been in declining health for several years.

Born Jan, 2, 1948, in Rowan County, Mrs. Elder was a daughter of Boyd Ray and Judith Jordan McKnight of China Grove.

A 1966 graduate of South Rowan High School, she was a former hairdresser and a former sales accountant with Charlotte Motor Speedway. She was a member of the Driver’s Wife Auxiliary at the speedway and Covenant Church of Harrisburg.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include husband J.C. “Jake” Elder; stepsons Randy and Andy Elder, both of Elberton, Ga.; stepdaughter Sandy Elder Maxwell, Elberton, Ga.; and three grandchildren.

Services: 3 p.m. Wednesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, conducted by the Rev. Charles Efird. Entombment, West Lawn Mausoleum, China Grove.

Visitation: 7:30-9 tonight at the funeral home. At other times, the family will be at the home on Valhalla Drive.

Effie Fetterson

MOORESVILLE — Effie Fetterson, 54, 7376 Selma Drive, died Friday (June 2, 2000) at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.

Born Oct. 4, 1946, in Iredell County, she was a daughter of the late Pauline Glaspy and Wurdy J. Mills. A graduate of Unity High School, she was a former employee of Troutman Industries, the Brian Center and Genesis ElderCare. She was a member of Mount Calvary Fire Baptized Holiness Church, Kannapolis.

Survivors include her husband, the Rev. John A. Fetterson; sisters Ada V. Mills, Mooresville, Catherine M. Carpenter, Troutman, and Mary M. Huntley; brothers Curtis Mills, Elder Nathaniel Mills and Eugene Mills; and foster brother Scottie Ray Mills.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Antioch Baptist Church, Cleveland, conducted by the Rev. Elder G.L. Danner and the Rev. Allen B. Wilson. The body will be taken to the church at 1:30. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, at Rutledge and Bingham Funeral Home, Statesville. At other times the family will be at the home of sister Catherine M. Carpenter, 133 Overcash Road, Troutman.

 

Hazel Youmans Harter

Hazel Youmans Harter, 94, 700 Wiley Ave., died Tuesday (June 6, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Alvesia Edward Heater

The funeral will be held Wednesday for Alvesia Edward Heater, 71, Salisbury, who died Sunday (June 4, 2000) at the Brian Center after a period of declining health.

Born Aug. 17, 1928, in LaFrank, W.Va., Mr. Heater was a son of the late Clyde and Luvada McCort Heater. Educated in the schools of Webster Springs, W.Va., Mr. Heater worked for Carolina Stamping as a tool and die maker. He was a member of Independent Victory Temple Church, Concord.

Survivors include wife Marion T. Heater; son Dennis Heater, Thomasville; daughters Alice Nicholas and Reba Henley, both of Salisbury; sister Irene Heater, Painesville, Ohio; and four grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Wednesday, Trading Ford Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. Michael Motley, pastor. The body will be cremated.

There will be no visitation.

Ada Overcash Hester

CHINA GROVE — The funeral will be held Wednesday for Ada Overcash Hester, 92, formerly of 53 Walnut St., who died Monday (June 5, 2000)at Concord Nursing Home, Concord.

Born May 24, 1908, in Rowan County, she was the daughter of the late Nettie Menius and Archie Lee Overcash. Educated at the old Cress School in Rowan County, she was a former winder with Cannon Mills and Linn Mills in Landis. She was a member of Mount Zion United Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her first husband, Clifford B. Hampton, and her second husband, Early Hester, who died in 1985.

Survivors include sons Eugene and Wade Hampton, both of Kannapolis, and H.L. Hampton, Salisbury; stepson Herman Hester, Winston-Salem; stepdaughter Helen Browder, Jacksonville, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Wednesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, Landis, conducted by the Rev. William Campbell. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home.

James Franklin Jones

KANNAPOLIS —

Born Nov. 24, 1923, in Lancaster, S.C. Mr. Jones was a son of the late James G. and Pearl McGriff Jones. Retired from Cannon Mills after 30 years with the company, he was a member of Bethel AME Zion Church, where he sang in the Gospel Choir and served on the Senior Usher Board.

Survivors include wife Ella B. Jones; son James E. Jones, of the home; daughter Janet J. Murdock, Landis; sisters Anni Shannon, Lancaster, S.C., Naomi Jones and Anna Mae McCarol, both of Kannapolis; brothers Willie C. Jones and Henry Jones, both of Lancaster, S.C.; and one grandchild.

Services:3 p.m. today, Bethel AME Zion Church, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Leo Whitaker.

Visitation:2:30-3 today, at the church. At other times the family will be at their homes.

Donzel Ralph Phillips

KANNAPOLIS — Donzel Ralph Phillips, 66, Kannapolis, died Sunday (June 4, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Dec. 25, 1933, in Greene County, Pa., Mr. Phillips was a son of the late Belle Moore and Arthur Phillips. He was employed with Babcock &Wilcox Inc., a steel company in Beaver Falls, Pa., for 25 years until his retirement due to disability. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean conflict.

Survivors include sons Randall Phillips, Mooresville, and Richard Phillips, Kannapolis; sister Mary White, Warren, Ohio; brothers Webster Phillips, Strongsville, Ohio, Arthur Phillips, Waynesburg, Pa., and William Phillips, Kannapolis; and two grandsons.

Services:4 p.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Gene Lee and the Rev. Ralph Smith. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove, with military rites by Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, at the funeral home.

Julius Jasper Phillips

KANNAPOLIS — Julius Jasper Phillips, 85, 1206 Margaret Ave., died Monday (June 5, 2000) at his home.

Born June 21, 1914, in Oconee County, S.C., Mr. Phillips was a son of the late Lewis and Lela Taylor Phillips. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, he had retired from Cannon Mills, Plant 1, No. 3 weave room.

A daughter, Mary Elizabeth Phillips, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Laura Hendricks Phillips; sons J.J. Phillips Jr. and Christopher D. Phillips, both of Kannapolis; daughters Pansy Jones of Harrisburg and Sherry P. Dalton of Huntersville; sister Florence Horne, Landis; seven granddaughters; and two great-granddaughters.

Services: 11 a.m. Wednesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. John W. Sell and the Rev. Wes Judy. Entombment, Carolina Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight at the funeral home. The rest of the time, the family will be at the home.

William Jonathan Smith

William Jonathan “June Baby”Smith, 67, 319 S. Lloyd St., died Friday (June 2, 2000) at his residence.

Born May 22, 1933, in Rowan County, Mr. Smith was a son of Bertie Holt Smith, Salisbury, and the late Willie Lee Smith. A graduate of J.C. Price High School, he was a member of Moore’s Chapel AME Zion Church.

Mr. Smith served in the U.S. Navy and retired from the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of J.C. Price American Legion Post 107.

Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his wife, Essie Jones Smith.

Services:Graveside, 1 p.m. Thursday, Salisbury National Cemetery, VA Medical Center, conducted by the Rev. T. Anthony Spearman. Military rites by Rowan Veterans Council

There will be no visitation.

Bulah Jane Starnes

Bulah Jane Nelson West Starnes, Salisbury, died Monday (June 5, 2000)at Rowan Regional Medical Center after a period of declining health and two weeks of serious illness.

Born in Davie County, Mrs. Starnes was a daughter of the late Rev. W.C. and Cora Lee Hollman Nelson. Educated in the Davie County schools, she was a homemaker and a member of West Park Baptist Church.

Mrs. Starnes was preceded in death by her first husband, Benjamin Harrison West.

Survivors include husband Billy Sawyer Starnes; sons Benjamin Harrison West Jr. and Jeffery Paul Starnes, both of Salisbury; daughters Mary Woods, Savannah, Ga., Robin McVicker, New London, Conn., and Barbara Sue Quantz, Salisbury; brother W.C. Nelson Jr., Salisbury; sister Louise Bibey, Statesville; 10 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Services:Graveside, 10 a.m. Wednesday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery, conducted by the Rev. Joel Hiatt, pastor of West Side Baptist Church.

Visitation:4-6 tonight, at the residence.

Lonnie Mitchum Tucker

KANNAPOLIS — Lonnie Mitchum Tucker, 82, 5284 Woodside St., died Sunday (June 4, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born July 22, 1917, in Henderson, Mr. Tucker was a son of the late Ida and Henry Tucker. A member of West A Tabernacle Church, he had retired from Linn-Corriher Mills, where he was a supervisor.

A daughter, Hazel T. Kelly, died May 27, 1979.

Survivors include wife Mae Baker Tucker; daughters Bobbie Steele and Diane Funderburk, both of Kannapolis, and Joyce Bowman, Concord; son Lonnie Lee Tucker, Raleigh.

Services:2 p.m. Wednesday, West A Tabernacle Church, conducted by the Rev. Richard Pethel and the Rev. Chris Pethel. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation:7-9 tonight, Whitley’s Funeral Home.

Everett Leslie White

CHINA GROVE — Everett Leslie White, 79, 5630 Highway 152 W., died Sunday (June 4, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born March 3, 1921, in Cabarrus County, Mr. White was a son of the late Clarice Perkins and Leslie Scott White. He was educated at Winecoff School inConcord. Retired from Cannon Mills, he was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church.

Mr. White served in the U.S. Army’s anti-aircraft battalion during World War II. He was a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America and the Queen City Model A Club.

Survivors include wife Juanita Bostian White; sons Ronnie Dale White, Salisbury, and Eric Lynn White, Concord; sister Elaine White Carlson, Glendale, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

Services:10 a.m. Thursday, Oak Grove United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Paula Judy. Burial, Oak Grove Church cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove. At other times the family will be at the residence.

Mary Propst Yost

Mary Propst Yost, 88, Meadows of Rockwell, formerly of 915 Yost Road, died Tuesday (June 6, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Linn-Honeycutt Funeral Home, China Grove, is in charge.

 

Michael Edward Pozyck

SPENCER — The funeral will be Wednesday for Michael Edward Pozyck, 53, 403 Seventh St., who died Sunday (June 4, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a brief illness.

Born March 7, 1947, in Lawrence, Mass., Mr. Pozyck was a son of Annie Edith Sherrill Pozcyk of Spencer and the late Louis B. Pozyck.

A 1965 graduate of North Rowan High School, he attended Catawba College and was a business administration graduate of Rowan Technical College. He worked for many years at Pope & Arey Food Store and was last employed by Jordan’s Hot Spot.

Mr. Pozyck served as a gunner’s mate in the U.S. Navy from 1967 to 1971. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

In addition to his mother, survivors include his wife, Mary Elizabeth “Cooki” Butler Pozyck; son Carl Michael Pozyck, Boone; daughter Anna Maria Pozyck, of the home; and brothers Stephen Sherrill Pozyck, Faith, and Alan Louis Pozyck, China Grove.

Services: 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, conducted by the Rev. Thomas Clements, pastor. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery, with military rites by the Rowan County Veterans Council.

Visitation: Prayer service at 7 tonight, followed by visitation, Summersett Funeral Home. At other time, the family will be at the home of Mr. Pozyck’s mother, 509 Seventh St.
