The last surviving grandson of Salisburys
first Catholic couple died Thursday in Southern Pines where he had lived since retirement.
Monsignor John Francis Roueche, 94, had a
distinguished career since he was ordained at at his home parish, Sacred Heart Catholic
Church in 1933. He was the first native Salisburian to become a priest.
He was born Nov. 7, 1906, to the late John Patrick
Roueche and Margaret Taaffe Roueche, who in 1887 were the first couple married at Sacred
Heart Church following its dedication in 1882.
His grandfather, Francis Richard Roueche, arrived
in Salisbury from France in 1838. He was married to the former Eliza Smith.
Monsignor Roueche attended Sacred Heart Catholic
School and Belmont College in Belmont. He completed his theological course at St.
Marys Seminary in Baltimore, Md.
He was ordained in the same little mission church
where he was baptized, received Holy Communion and was confirmed.
The Most Rev. William J. Hafey, D.D. Bishop of
Raleigh, ordained Roueche on June 11, 1933, by . The ordination ceremony usually takes
place at the cathedral church of the bishop of the diocese, but Bishop Hafey, wishing to
honor the young neophyte and his pioneering relatives, came to Salisbury.
Roueche celebrated his first Solemn High Mass on
June 18, 1933, at St. Matthews Church in Washington, D.C., where his immediate
family had made their home for some years.
As a Monsignor, he returned to Sacred Heart on
Sept. 21, 1993, to celebrate Mass on the 60th anniversary of his ordination.
In his departing remarks at the event, Roueche
looked both to the past and the future.
Certainly Salisbury is the place, and Sacred
Heart parish is the parish. When I was a boy, the big sign down at the railroad station
was Salisbury Is The Place, and on the other side, The Home of Mint
Cola. Mint Cola is gone, but Salisbury is and will always be th place. And may we
all meet again in our true and heavenly home. God Bless!
Roueche served as a Army chaplain during World War
II.
In the 1950s, he was in charge of the Catholic
mobile chapel, The Madonna of the Highways, which toured the state when
Catholics were few and far between in many areas.
He retired to Southern Pines in 1975, but
continued to say two Masses on Sunday at the age of 86. He served in 11 parishes from New
Bern to Ashevile during his 42 years of active priesthood.
Roueche was a priest in the Catholic Diocese in
Raleigh in 1955 when Pope Pius XII honored him with the title of Right Reverend Monsignor.
His brothers Lawrence and John and sisters
Elizabeth, Bernadette, Genevieve, Hortense, Teresa, Agnes and Gertrude, preceded him in
death.
Descendants of patriarch Francis Richard Roueche
