Kannapolis getting Rowan County’s new ABC store

KANNAPOLIS —Workmen are putting the finishing touches on a new Rowan County ABC Store at 1903 N. Cannon Blvd.

Construction is expected to be completed in August, with the opening around mid-September.

Snipes & Associates of Salisbury is the general contractor for the nearly $500,000 facility.

The construction costs total $390,000. The Rowan Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission paid $60,000 for the lot.

On Thursday, the Rowan ABC board set aside $50,000 to pay for shelving and other fixtures for the new store. Shelving is expected to cost $25,000.

Officials indicated there will be some additional costs in getting the store ready to open. They specifically mentioned the cost of a sign.

The store will be significantly larger than the current store, which is located south of the new store. It will have 3,500 square feet of space, including areas for retail sales, warehouse space, offices and related facilities.

Display and customer areas will be expanded. In addition, the store will have a larger parking area.

The new store is nearly identical to the Salisbury ABC store on Jake Alexander Boulevard. Salisbury architect Robert Stone designed both buildings.

The current store shares parking with two other businesses located in the same building.

The new store is scheduled to replace both the Kannapolis and the China Grove stores.

Officials have decided to delay closing the China Grove store until at least Jan. 1.

The China Grove facility is owned by the county. The Kannapolis location is leased space.

Linda Lowman, manager of the county ABC operations, said the new store will open when it is stocked. There will be no moving sale, she said.
