Tom Basinger

HICKORY - Tom Basinger, 79, 2313 Liberty Church Road, died Saturday (July 22, 2000) at Carolinas Medical Center, Charlotte. Son of the late Walter M. and Iris Culp Basinger, he was a retired carpenter.

A World War ll veteran of the U.S. Army, he served with the infantry in Guam, New Guinea and the Philippines. He was a member of American Legion Post 48.

A son, Thomas Hendrix Basinger, preceded him in death.

Survivors include wife Vivian Hendrix Basinger; brother Emanuel Basinger, Richfield; sisters Ruby Weaisner, Claudine Hinson and Isabelle Rowland, all of Albemarle, Ann Henry, New London, and Jennie Polizze and Stella Kirk, both of Richfield.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Bass-Smith Funeral Home Chapel, conducted by the Rev. Benny Hendrix. Burial, Catawba Memorial Park, graveside military rites by American Legion Post 48.

Visitation: 12:30-2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

 

John Doss ‘J. D.’ Hill

ALBEMARLE - John Doss “J.D.” Hill, 81, 411 Reeves Ave., died Sunday (July 23, 2000) at Britthaven of Piedmont.

Born Sept. 2, 1918, in Anson County, he was a son of the late David and Lillian William Hill. He was an appliance salesman for Economy Auto Supply and a member of South Albemarle Baptist Church.

Survivors include wife Bessie Hill; son Robert Hill, Albemarle; daughter Sylvia Thomson, Norwood; brothers Bennett Hill, Ansonville, Jim Hill, Wadesboro, and Glenn Hill, Tampa, Fla.; sister Laura Young, Ansonville; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Tuesday, Hartsell Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Wyman Bolin. Burial, Pleasant Grove Baptist Church cemetery, Oakboro.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight at the funeral home.

 

Mildred Leonard Dorsett

Mildred Rebecca Leonard Dorsett, 86, formerly of Long Ferry Road, died Saturday (July 22, 2000) at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Born Sept. 23, 1913, in Rowan County, Mrs. Dorsett was a daughter of the late Rebecca Phelps and S. Preston Leonard. Educated in the Salisbury schools, she was a homemaker. She was a lifelong member of Trading Ford Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school and sang in the choir.

Mrs. Dorsett was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Gordon Dorsett.

Survivors include son Dr. Preston Dorsett, Memphis, Tenn.; daughters Delores Dorsett Thomen, Salisbury, Georgia Dorsett Worsham, East Bend, and Deborah Dorsett Hagelburger, Charelston, S.C.; sisters Gladys Kesler and Margaret Loflin, both of Salisbury; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services:2 p.m. Tuesday, Trading Ford Baptist Church, Salisbury, conducted by the Rev. Mike Motley, pastor. Burial, church cemetery.

Visitation: 12:30-1:30 p.m. Tuesday, Lyerly Funeral Home.

Vergie Miller Goodman

Vergie Miller Goodman, 80, Salisbury, died Saturday (May 22, 2000) at The Meadows Retirement Center, Rockwell.

Born Aug. 11, 1919, in Rowan County, Mrs. Goodman was a daughter of the late Flora Lee Ribelen and Adam Luther Miller. Educated in the Rowan County schools, she was formerly employed with Cannon Mills and PPG. She was a member of Grace Bible Church, Rockwell.

Her husband, Charles B. Goodman, died Dec. 8, 1978.

Survivors include sons George Luther Goodman and Charles B. Goodman Jr., both of Salisbury; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Grace Bible Church, Rockwell, conducted by the Rev. Don Lyerly. The body will be taken to the church at 10:30 a.m. Burial, Brookhill Memorial Gardens, Rockwell.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Powles Funeral Home, Rockwell.

Robert Lee ‘Bobby’Kepley

Robert Lee “Bobby”Kepley, 51, Salisbury, died Sunday (July 23, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center.

Summersett Funeral Home is in charge.

George ‘Donnie’ Kiser

EAST SPENCER — George Allen “Donnie” Kiser, 60, Detroit, Mich., formerly of East Spencer, died Friday (July 21, 2000)at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

Born Sept. 13, 1939, in Rowan County, Mr. Kiser was a son of Elease Brown Kiser, East Spencer, and the late Odell Kiser. He attended Dunbar High School and was last employed with Harper’s Upholster in Detroit. He was a former member of Southern City AME Zion Church.

Survivors include son George A. Kiser Jr., East Spencer; daughter Sheena R. Heichel, Detroit; brothers Charles Kiser, Salisbury, James Kiser, East Spencer, and Ralph Kiser, Philadelphia; sisters Essie Mae Foxx and Geraldine Mitchell, both of East Spencer, Irene Bates and Rosalind Kesler, both of Salisbury, Mary Belle Kiser Hasty, Detroit, Catherine Kiser Bradley, Philadelphia, and Brenda D. Kelly, Masury, Ohio; and three grandchildren.

Services will be held in Detroit, with burial in Salisbury. Plans are incomplete.

The family will be at the home of sister Essie Mae Foxx, 701 S. Long St.

Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, Salisbury, is in charge.

 

James Ronald Moffitt

KANNAPOLIS — James Ronald Moffitt, 57, 306 Central Ave., died Saturday (July 22, 2000)at his home.

Born Jan. 28, 1943, in Burke County, Mr. Moffitt was a son of Edith Virginia Cook Moffitt Barbee, of the home, and the late James Moffitt.

Survivors, in addition to his mother, include brothers Richard Wayne Moffitt and Roger Dale Moffitt, both of Kannapolis; and sisters Virginia M. Lumley, Gastonia, Judy M. Moore, Salisbury, Dolly M. Poston, Landis, and Sue M. Barbee, Mount Pleasant.

Services:2 p.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Billy Poston and the Rev. Willie Rash. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 6-8:30 tonight, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the residence.

 

Mary Ann Pressley

KANNAPOLIS —Mary Ann Pressley, 66, 2807 Florida Ave., died Sunday (July 23, 2000)at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Whitley’s Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Frances Lilly Still

ALBEMARLE — Frances Lilly Still, 86, 1930 Woodhaven Court, died Sunday (July 23, 2000) at her home.

Born Feb. 22, 1914, in Stanly County, Mrs. Still was a daughter of the late Joe A. and Maude Morris Lilly. Retired as owner and operator of Vogue Beauty Shop, she was a member of Central United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Still was preceded in death by her husband, Baxter B. Still.

Survivors include son Fred Still, Cary; daughters Nelle W. Hopkins, Albemarle, Sue W. Harris, Jamestown, and Mary Jo W. Whitley, Columbia, S.C.; 12 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Services: 11 a.m. Tuesday, Central United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ben Wilson and the Rev. David Alexander. The body will be taken to the church at 10:30 a.m. Burial, FairviewMemorial Park.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, Stanly Funeral Home. At other times the family will be at the home daughter Nelle W. Hopkins, 1004 Smith St.

Larry Wayne Thompson

KANNAPOLIS — Larry Wayne Thompson, 57, 1014 Sprucewood St., died Sunday (July 23, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center, Concord.

Born Sept. 13, 1942 in Cabarrus County, Mr. Thompson was a son of Jack and Jessie Patterson Thompson, both of Kannapolis. A 1960 graduate of A.L. Brown High School, he was also a graduate of East Tennessee State University in Johnson City.

A former salesman with Liggett &Myers Inc., he was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mr. Thompson was preceded in death by his wife, Jo Long Thompson, whom he married July 8, 1965.

Services:Private service, 11 a.m. Monday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Pat Purdy. Burial, Carolina Memorial Park Chapel Mausoleum.

Visitation: None.

Johnnie Edward Tucker

EAST SPENCER — Johnnie Edward Tucker, 67, 307 Weant St., died Friday (July 22, 2000) at Rowan Regional Medical Center, Salisbury, after a year of declining health.

Born Dec. 28, 1932, in Ridgeway, S.C. Mr. Tucker was a son of the late Carrie Bell Ricks and Frederick Tucker. Educated in the public schools of Fairfield County, S.C., he also attended Dunbar High School.

A retired Rowan County employee, Mr. Tucker was a former member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. A U.S. Air Force veteran of the Korean War,he was a member of J.C. Price American Post 107, the Toaster Club and the Dunbar High School Reunion Committee.

Survivors include wife Barbara Williams Tucker, Buffalo, N.Y.; son Gregory T. Tucker, also of Buffalo; daughter Diane Murphy, also of Buffalo; brother Frederick Tucker, Salisbury; sisters Evelyn Stribling, Philadelphia, Diane McKoy, Mays Leading, N.J., and Lynette Tucker, Jersey City, N.J.; five grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Services:1 p.m. Tuesday, Noble and Kelsey Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. Steven Bethune, pastor, Locke Street Church of God, Salisbury. Burial, Salisbury National Cemetery, VA Medical Center, with military rites by Salisbury-Rowan Veterans Council.

Visitation:12:30 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.

 

Ruby Geneva Wilkinson

CONCORD —Ruby Geneva Wilkinson, 85, 323 Wilkinson Court S.E., died Saturday (July 22, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Feb. 17, 1915, in Rowan County, she was a daughter of the late America and Charles Swan Sheets. A beautician, she owned her own business. She was a member of First Church of the Nazarene of Concord.

She was married to the late Eugene Walter Wilkinson.

Survivors include son Charles E. Wilkinson, Concord; brother Gene Sheets, Woodleaf; and two grandchildren.

Services:11 a.m. Tuesday, First Church of the Nazarene, conducted by the Rev. William Corte. Burial, Chestnut Hills Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-8:30 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home at Concord.
