Rhonda Looney Brooks

CONCORD —Rhonda Looney Brooks, 38, 1460 Westgate Circle, died Saturday (July 22, 2000) at NorthEast Medical Center.

Born Sept. 14, 1961, in Iredell County, Mrs. Brooks was a daughter of the late Ruth McFarlin and Henry Thomas Looney. She was formerly employed with the sewing room at Cannon Mills, Plant 1, Kannapolis.

She was a member of the Southern Hospitality CB Club and Westside Church of the Nazarene, Kannapolis.

Survivors include husband M. David Brooks; and brother Ronald Looney, Kannapolis.

Services: 4 p.m. Tuesday, Whitley’s Funeral Home, Kannapolis, conducted by the Rev. Charles Savage. Burial, West Lawn Memorial Park, China Grove.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday, at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Jessie and Lisa Looney, 2748 Montana Drive, Kannapolis.

Katherine B. Carver

Katherine B. Carver, 83, Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Daytona Beach, Fla., died Friday (July 21, 2000) at Methodist Germantown in Methodist.

She was the wife of the late James Carver, formerly of Salisbury.

Survivors include daughter Brenda Thomas, Memphis, Tenn.; son Sonny Carver, Dayton, Ohio; two grandchildren; and three step-grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Tuesday, Chestnut Hill Cemetery.

Memphis Funeral Home, Memphis, Tenn., is in charge.

 

 

David Keith Deese

The funeral will be Monday for David Keith Deese, 41, Ver-Len Park, Salisbury, who died Wednesday (July 19, 2000) at his residence.

Born May 6, 1959, in Rowan County, Mr. Deese was a son of Robert W. Deese, Salisbury, and the late Ophelia Post Deese. Educated in the Rowan County schools, he was employed with Murdock Tile Co. He was a U.S. Army veteran.

Survivors include brother Robert W. Deese Jr., Salisbury; and sister Cynthia K. Doby, Churchland.

Services: Graveside, 11 a.m. Monday, Salisbury National Cemetery, conducted by Chaplain Ethel Davis.

Visitation: None.

Memorials: American Cancer Society, Rowan County Unit, P.O. Box 1264, Salisbury, N.C. 28145-1264.

 

Mildred Leonard Dorsett

Mildred Leonard Dorsett, 82, Salisbury, died Saturday (July 22, 2000) at the Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks.

Lyerly Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Edward Wallie Freeze

DAVIDSON — Edward Wallie Freeze, 63, 10671 Earnhardt Lake Road, died Saturday (July 22, 2000) at his home.

Born June 20, 1937, in Cabarrus County, Mr. Freeze was a son of the late Ruby Barnes and Floyd Freeze. He was a self-employed commercial fisherman.

He was preceded in death by sons Donald Ray and Eddie Freeze.

Survivors include wife Brenda Brown Freeze; daughters Delores Eberhart, Kannapolis, and Karen Brawley, Huntersville; sons Larry Freeze, of the home, Jeffery and Terry Freeze, both of Kannapolis, and Randy Freeze, Concord; sister Bobbie Freeze Forbis, Salisbury; brother Donald Freeze, Mooresville; and nine grandchildren.

Services: Graveside, 10:30 a.m. Monday, Coddle Creek ARP Church cemetery, Mooresville, conducted by the Rev. Gary Koldstead.

Vergie Miller Goodman

ROCKWELL — Vergie Miller Goodman, 81, Rockwell, died Saturday (July 22, 2000) at The Meadows of Rockwell.

Powles Funeral Home is in charge.

 

Anne Ollis

KANNAPOLIS — Anne Ollis, 50, 115 N. Rose Ave., died Friday (July 21, 2000) at 203 Laurel Point, Salisbury.

Born Dec. 10, 1949, in Concord, she was a daughter of Ray L. and Lois M. Ollis, both of Kannapolis. Mrs. Ollis was a member of Memorial United Methodist Church. She had retired as a registered nurse with at Grady Hospital, Atlanta.

Survivors, in addition to her parents, include son Robert David Lindsey, Atlanta; daughters Amy Elizabeth Lindsey and Kathryn Lois Lindsey, both of Atlanta; and brothers Robert Brown and Ray “Pete” Ollis, both of Kannapolis.

Services: 4 p.m. Monday, Memorial United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Ottis Snow and the Rev. Grace Calhoun.

Visitation: None.

Eunice Holland Queen

BEREA, Ky.— Eunice Holland Queen, 53, died Friday (July 21, 2000) in Berea.

She was the mother of Pam Piette, Salisbury, N.C.

Services: 11 a.m. Monday, Macon Funeral Home. Burial, Roper Cemetery.

Visitation: 7-9 tonight, at the funeral home.

 

 

Crowell John Smith

OAKBORO — Crowell John Smith, 83, 449 E. First St., died Saturday (July 22, 2000) at Stanly Manor.

Born June 15, 1917, in Stanly County, Mr. Smith was a son of the late Jenny Curlee and Richard Smith. He had retired from the Stanly County schools.

A U.S. Army veteran, Mr. Smith served in France and Germany during World War II. He fought at the Battle of the Bulge and received the Distinguished Service Cross.

Formerly Oakboro’s chief of police, he also served with the Oakboro Volunteer Fire Department and helped with the Oakboro Fourth of July Celebration. He was a charter member of the West Stanly Saddle Club.

Survivors include wife Ruth Evelyn Baucom Smith; sons Alan Richard Smith, Charlotte, and Mark Crowell Smith, Oakboro; daughters Cindy Smith Cahill and Judy Smith Moseley, both of Raleigh; brothers Lee Smith, Oakboro, and Melton Smith, Norwood; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Services: 2 p.m. Monday, First Baptist Church of Oakboro, conducted by the Rev. Dr. Terrell Watts. Burial, Oakwood Cemetery, with full military rites by the Albemarle-Stanly County DAV.

Visitation: 6-8 tonight, Hartsell Funeral Home, Albemarle. At other times the family will be at the residence.
